I thought I would start up this thread here... I may be the only contributor for a while! :)
I went and saw Black Panther today. It is a good film, but I thought it would be better what with all the buzz about it. The performances are great and there's nothing wrong with the effects, I just think the story wasn't as strong as it could have been. It's still in my Top 10 MCU films though. :) 8/10
That's cool to know...I have been pondering whether to see this or not...I wasn't too impressed by the trailer...and frankly there are enough of Marvel heroes out there already...not to mention INFINITY WARS is coming this year too...and that is gonna be epic for sure.

^^^
To be accurate there are 7 Marvel films this year but they're not all in the MCU:
Black Panther
Avengers: Infinity War
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Deadpool 2
X-Men: Dark Phoenix
(while New Mutants has just been pushed back to Feb 2019)
Venom
Spiderman (the animated film)
I actually love well-done kids' animation best, stuff like from Pixar and Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli.
We saw Peter Rabbit this afternoon. It's okay actually, not great, I think a better choice for the voice of Peter Rabbit could have been made (I don't mind James Corden but it didn't seem right for the role). It's quite funny in places, a little ridiculous on occasions, but yeah it was ok. 6/10Have to say it looked pretty ordinary from the trailers I saw, even my 11yo daughter thought it looked pretty lame.

I quite enjoyed this too! Brutal as hell! And Arnie (as usual) was fantastic as was Joe Manganiello!
Last night watched The Theory of Everything, in memory of Hawking.

I loved this movie when I saw it in Highschool. I watched it again with a neighbour who had heard about and was curious to see it. Still stands up and has deservedly earned a cult like following in the years since it was first released. Apparently it did not do well in the theaters but it was quite successful on home video and also sold well when it was released on DVD.

Last night watched The Theory of Everything, in memory of Hawking.
A great film, I loved Redmayne and Jones in the lead roles. Redmayne was so convincing as Hawking.

It's an animation from about 10 years ago and uses motion capture. As such the movement of characters is pretty realistic but the one draw back is the facial expressions look like everyone has had a stroke . Some of the scenery and visuals are actually pretty good for what I guess is a low budget production.
The film itself is typical RE fair... virus outbreak in airport... blah blah.. rescue of dodgy senator...blah blah... all seems to lead to a hi-tech research facility... blah blah.. sectret dealings... blah blah... big battle against mutant etc.
It's enjoyable enough, better than several of the live action films 7/10. Now looking forward to the imminent release on DVD of Resident Evil: Vendetta.
EDIT: One thing I should add, the way the CGI is done it does make it look like you're watching someone playing a video game.
Quote 2
Just quoting myself here as I've just watched Resident Evil: Vendetta, which uses very similar technology to the earlier Degeneration film... i.e. animation using motion capture.
This time the plot involves an arms dealer with a grudge who has access to the virus and the race to stop him from releasing the virus and develop a vaccine. It's okay, the graphics are slightly more refined than the earlier film, but that doesn't make up for a slightly predicatble plot and weak villain. 6/10

I watched this for the first time in years and I still like it and think it has stood the test of time. Stallone was exceptional I thought and the rest of the cast is solid or at times even great.

As long as that? I knew it had been a while, and yes it doesn't mean the films are bad but it really does limit the roles he can do.

Nevertheless some very good movies . He shows another acting register with Death Becomes Her
Death Wish is a solid revenge/action film remake (I don't really remember the original), it works well, suitably violent and grisly... but when did Willis start acting like a robot? It's been a few years now and it's always the same emotionless character (which actually works ok for this film!) 7/10

I have not seen this remake, but if you are able to, you should re-see the original Death Wish. Bronson is excellent, not as a heavy, but as an average working Joe. And the film is believable, although it is fiction, with IMO a great ending. Set in New York City and shot on location. 9/10

I was hoping to watch it before I saw the remake but I just didn;t get around to it. It's on the rental list.
I was kinda looking forward to the Death Wish remake but Bruce Willis curbs my enthusiasm for it. Pulp Fiction was his best performance and movie but he's mostly shit in everything else.
He's always been a B grade actor that's been given A grade roles.
On TV: The Back To The Future trilogy. Also great. Got an affinity for the third, as that's the one i had on VHS as a kid.Real Fans love all the movies in the trilogy. The Cartoon Series and Video Game wasn't bad either. :headbanger:

DOCTOR STRANGE
The mystical realm of the Marvel Universe is finally revealed when Doctor Stephen Strange gets his own movie.
Dr. Strange is a surgeon of great talent and ego but when he gets into a car crash and loses the ability to preform surgeries he turns to an ancient and mystical place called Kamar Taj for healing but quickly learns there is much more to it than just restoring the use of his hands. The leader of Kamar Taj, the Ancient One, a powerful mystic and sorcerer shows him the way to help and save people outside of medicine. Quickly Strange is pulled into a fight between our universe and the dark universe which with it's followers lead by the powerful Kaecillus try to unleash upon our existence.
Visually this is probably the most stunning Marvel movie yet. The mirror universe fight in New York is by far the most beautiful and strangest (pun intented) thing we've seen in Marvel movies yet. Same goes for Strange's voyage to the Dark Universe where he meets Dormammu the destroyer of worlds.
This is also a bit darker and bit more serious than the other movies but there is just enough humor to carry it through and not make it too serious.
The cast is great once again. I had my doubts about Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead but in fact his arrogance and egotistical way of acting is just what this character needed, yet another perfect lead casting for Marvel. Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecillus was wonderful, he is a fantastic bad guy actor, he has such incredible presence. I also pondered how Tilda Swinton would preform as the Ancient One as she most certainly doesn't have the pedigree for a role like this but truth be told she was brilliant as well. Same goes for Chiwetel Ejiofor who has played bad guys before but here he was the side kick although the final post credit scene would indicate something different in his future. Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer dr. Strange's past love interest provided nice back story.
After a slightly slow and relatively dark beginning the story picked up fast and soon a new true Marvel hero was born...the quality of the Marvel universe movies never ceases to amaze me...time after time, movie after movie, hero after hero. The best part of it is all of them are flawed one way or another and that brings something to identify with no matter how mystical their powers or abilities may be...or how egotistical they might be...they, like all people, grow and learn and improve..both as heroes and as people. None more than Doctor Strange...I cannot wait to see more of him...in and beyond the Infinity War.

Great review , Charg :pub:
Absolutely 100% agree. Certainly the less oriented teen MCU movie . Its mystical side brings something unusual ,a more adult sensitivity. I enjoyed it a lot.
And this premium cast : Benedict Cumberbatch IS Dr Strange. Big fan of Tilda Swinton here. As for Mads Mikkelsen, nothing can be wrong with him.

There were 3 Jurassic Park films in the 90s, then it was rebooted in 2015 with Jurassic World, this is the sequel to that film and yes, a 3rd film in the rebooted series is very likely.
Watched this Sunday night for maybe the 328th time.

^^^ That was the film where I realised Jonah Hill was actually a good actor, rather than the dumb schmuck appearing in those moronic Seth Rogan/Adam Sandler type films.
We saw Tag the other day. We both thought it was ok but nothing special. The slow motion scenes where Jerry defends himself from being tagged were quite good and Isla Fisher is always watchable. But overall it was an non-essential 95 minutes of our lives. 5/10

Yeah Tarantino is a bit off, kind of a sick frame of mind. I did like some of his other movies but this one was just needlessly violent and twisted.
I saw the original Death Wish on rental today. Hmmm, I'm not sure what to make of it. I've no problem with the story which is fine, but the film making is shoddy. I may be looking at it with modern eyes and expectations but some of the problems I had with the film were more to do with the dialogue, editing and make-up... it felt very amaturish. 6/10

Yeah the original Death Wish has not aged well, but I find DW 2 is a little better and then after that they all pretty much stink. Have you seen the remake with Bruce Willis? I almost bought it at Walmart today, but it was a bit expensive so I will wait till it comes down some.

I remember it was pretty good when I saw it as a kid...Bronson was a real bad ass...But I saw it again on tv few years ago and I have to say it didn't look the same anymore at all...so I do agree 100% with you here...it hasn't aged well at all. Unlike it's counter parts like the Dirty Harry movies and such which are just as powerful now as they were back then.
I've heard good things about the new version...it's on my shopping list for sure. Willis is perfect for the role.

If it wasn't for the political threads, I'd be worried that I'm the same person as Typhon... The Martian, to me, is a very strong film that strives to be as good at hard science as the book was. There will still be things that Mythbuster types could try and poke holes in, but we also have to suspend some disbelief and assume that some zapotron rays or unobtanium alloys were used to solve the problems that now enable us to enjoy some good sci-fi that doesn't involve aliens, romance, or operatic elements. Its Man vs. Nature and is a great survival story.

Agreed. The Martian is the best but all are good imo.
Red Planet: I like the fight between Kilmer and the robot as well as its search for energy resources in the various abandoned explorer ships on the planet. OK, love his relationship with Carrie-Anne Moss. More a Action/War movie than a pure Alien/Sci-fi production.
Mission to Mars : the soundtrack is fantastic . The rescue attempt of Tim Robbins alone is worth watching the movie. The spaceship 's so beautiful , a true "character".
When the team arrives on Mars, we move into another style discoveries after discoveries ... til the end.

^^^ I enjoyed The Witch but it is not particularly scary and is a little quirky. Love Anya Taylor-Joy in it and always look out for films with her in.
I saw Venom and Johnny English Strikes Again yesterday.
Don't listen to the rumours Venom is not 'Catwoman Bad', it might not be up there with the latest MCU films and might not be that original. But it is fun, the effects are perfectly good and Tom Hardy is very good... Michelle Williams was perhaps a little under-used. 7.5/10

Saw the new Halloween on Thursday night. What an awesome movie. It is as good as the original and way better than Zombie's version. Jamie Lee Curtis was amazing. So glad she decided to do this one. Nice combo of scares, gore and a couple laughs. Probably going again this weekend. What was so awesome about? It explained nothing, they took the sibling factor away, the guy waits 40 years to escape and just kills with no plot as to what drives him to go back after Lorie Strode who is no longer related to him.

Well that's your opinion. Why does there have to be a back story? Michael Myers is pure evil as explained in the first film. Not knowing what makes him this way to me is more terrifying. Sibling factor was a bullshit plot line to make a second film, a film that John Carpenter didn't really want to do. They said they were ignoring all sequels. He doesn't simply wait to start his killings,he waits till he has an opportunity to escape and go back to the person who put him in the hospital and escaped his killings. IMO it was an awesome film.
^^^ I saw that a few weeks back. I quite like the cast but to be fair it was a lacklustre movie. I think he genuinely intended to pay back the investors he was just very naive.
Watched Salyut 7 on the flight to NYC today.true !! I saw it too . Awesome movie
AWESOME MOVIE, DUDES!
If you liked The Martian and Apollo 13, this is right up there with them. Excellent effects, tastefully utilized, particularly for the amazing sunrises from space. The film is based on the actual recovery of the Salyut 7 station, considered one of the most incredible of space engineering efforts. Although there are some invented threats to the mission emerging from the USA, I chalk those up to general paranoia the Russians have about Americans - and then get into the film, which has lots going for it.
Available on Amazon Prime.

Thelemech I love the Barbara Steel foreign movies.
Have you ever seen Black Sunday?
I think you will like it, it’s a classic, she plays a dual role. Also, She Beast is another good movie with Barbara Steele(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/4e/Nightmare-Castle-poster.jpg/220px-Nightmare-Castle-poster.jpg)

Have not seen Black Sunday, but Barbara Steel was the only good thing about Nightmare Castle. I will seek out Black Sunday.
Watched this on Halloween. It's probably close to 100 times I've watched it now but never tire of it and always enjoy watching it with a first timer. This move is over 30 years old now but everything about it still holds up strong today. Just an absolute classic and obviously one of my all time favourites.

Yes! Bride of Re-Animator and a 3rd movie Beyond Re-Animator. Both pale in comparison to the first one. Stuart Gordon didnt direct them though. Brian Yuzna who was producer on the first one was director on both.Watched this on Halloween. Wasn’t there a sequel to it?

the beauty of Ursula Andress is really out of time . Same gorgeous league as Raquel Welch, Jane Fonda , Faye Dunaway , Brigitte Bardot and Claudia Cardinale.

Two bumbling store clerks inadvertently erase the footage from all of the tapes in their video rental store. In order to keep the business running, they re-shoot every film in the store with their own camera, with a budget of zero dollars. Mildly funny. 6.5/10

I think that I have - though I cannot really remember it for some reason.
Finally watched Black Panther. Not as good as I thought it would be with all the hype and whatnot. I have only watched 9 MCU movies so far and that one would not even be in my top 5. Nakia was probably my favorite character. 6/10

Absolutely not as good as the critics or whoever would have you believe. I mean it's not a bad film, but it's plot is nothing new and the only major difference between this and other solid Superhero movies is that it has a largely black cast, which shouldn't be the overiding factor as to whether the film is good or not. Of the 20 MCU films I rank it about 12th.

That's one of my all time favourite sci-fi horror movies!
What's so strange about smoking cigarettes? Nearly the entire Nostromo crew smoked too... ;) Gotta remember this too was done before this whole "no smoking in movies" thing started.
What! The film was made in 1997. Have you ever seen anyone light up on the space shuttle or the space station?
What! The film was made in 1997. Have you ever seen anyone light up on the space shuttle or the space station?
Oh come on...it's really not that big of a deal now is it? ;D Also I don't think you can really smoke in zero gravity...but all these ships have had artificial gravity.

My point is that there is no logical reason to show astronauts smoking. It's stupid.
Event Horizon is one of my favorite Horror/Sci-Fi films, just excellent.

^^^ Tom Cruise is actually pretty good most of the time... he's just an idiot in real life!! :)
As an alien invasion film it was great... it just wasn't War of the Worlds... IMHO!
(https://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/21/MPW-10573)Yeah unfortunately for them the majority of women in Hollywood are washed up by age 45. They're making a sequel to Top Gun btw, scheduled for release in 2020. I think only Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer from the original cast will be in it.
God bless 80s !! broadcasted this last week on a the TNT channel, I couldn't resist. Off put all the obvious clichés, this film is a must.
During the game of beach volley, the 4 players all muscle out and covered with sweat fall into the sand several times ... and get up without a grain stuck on the skin but all with the immaculate Ray Bans! fantastic !
Wow, just Wow !! I did some research about Kelly Mac Gillis after seeing the movie. What a shock ! her physical appearance has changed enormously, to say the least . She has declared publicly to be lesbian for several years. A dream has miserably collapsed :-X

I think that work of art describes that movie quite well. It's not really a movie at all... And like most art not everyone gets it...I gotta say I've never gotten it either....and I have always found it waaay to artsy fartsy for my tastes. That being said, considering when it was made it did have some really ground breaking stuff too.

EDGE OF TOMORROW
The real problem however is caused by the pg13 rating...this is supposed to be a hopeless war movie after all and the battle scenes should depict that, but they don't. And the over the top speedy editing doesn't help. You can barely see the alien creatures and ofcourse there is virtually no blood. This movie should have been a strong R...but that's where Tom Cruise comes in again as he always demands a pg rating.

The soldiers in that movie are out of comic books or something. If a Russian or German production house had handled the movie (without Tom Cruise as the lead), we would have had a much grimmer - and more realistic - show. And if Konstantin Khabensky had been cast in the lead, he would have done a great job with it, given his performances in Night Watch and Day Watch.
The gangster genre has always been my favourite and both Pacino and DeNiro are my all time favourite actors ...
So they released a little teaser trailer during the Academy Awards yesterday for Martin Scorsese's upcoming film The Irishman starring Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel.
The term "paint houses"means to kill people or, literally, cover the walls with blood.
I haven't anticipated a movie release such as this for a long long time. The gangster genre has always been my favourite and both Pacino and DeNiro are my all time favourite actors with Scorcese being my favourite director so I'm beyond psyched for this movie.

^^^ Wow, its budget is currently $175m Scorsese's most expensive film (mainly due to the CGI needed to make the leads look 40 years younger for the period scenes). It doesn't look like it will get a proper cinema release either, it has been suggested that it will have a two week run later in the year so that it qualifies for awards and such like, and then go straight to Netflix. I don't mind it being made by Netflix but give it a proper theatrical run please!
^^Not sure which ones you're reffering to as crappy but The Wolf Of Wall Street was a great movie and was critically acclaimed as was Hugo which won him the best director Oscar. Shutter Island while not up there with his best was far from crap. I still haven't seen his 2016 film Silence as its not really my cup of tea but looking it up it seems it was also critically acclaimed.

Strange.
you quote my comment and specify that it illustrates the fact that people have different opinions but then you say that you have not seen the film, simply because of the subject, which is rather reductive to prevail a solid personal opinion .
A cast aligning Ciaran Hinds, Liam Neeson, Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield directed by Martin Scorsese motivates me enough to risk watching the film which, let's face it, has big chance to be a great film notwithstanding a topic dealing with persecutions targeting misionaries Jesuits during the XVII century in Japan.

ypu're right.
But History is one thing , cinematic Art is another one.
Not sure that one day I would have been interested in this abomination that took place in Japan centuries ago than through this wonderful film by Martin Scorsese.
I was less ignorant at the end of the movie.

I suspect you're correct, but I am still expecting it to be a good film.
There was a controversy about the Captain Marvel movie but I do not really understand what the uproar was about. Something about social justice warriors?????
Dr Strange is 7th out of 20 on my list of MCU titles...

Spent Saturday and Sunday getting some Marvel movies watched that I have yet to see.
Saturday we watched Ant-Man and then Ant-Man and the Wasp. Both very good films, although I liked the second one better.
Sunday wife and I went and saw Captain Marvel. Very good film, great acting, good story. MCU has very few misses and this one didn't disappoint. After that we watched at home the one that started it all, Iron Man and then Iron Man 2. Again good films, but I was a bit disappointed in Iron Man from just the stand point of how great every one was saying it was. It was good but honestly I enjoyed the second one better.
So now I only have 6 more to go to be all caught up on MCU

I've not seen Captain Marvel yet... probably on Wednesday, I hope it will be good!
I prefer the original Iron Man, I thought 2 and 3 were among the weaker entries in the MCU.
Which are the 6 left for you to watch?

^^^ Sorry it's a fake story spread by people who would prefer to keep women down! Her comments about "white critics" were made about A Wrinkle in Time and did not relate to any other film.

I saw Captain Marvel yesterday. It's pretty good, it didn't have the "wow factor" I got the first time I saw Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor 3, but it is better than - say - Black Panther.
After an intergalactic skirmish between the Kree and the shapeshifting Skrulls, Vers (Brie Larson, a Kree warrior) is captures but escapes in a pod which lands her on Earth closely followed by Skrull searching for her. Vers quickly teams up with Nick Fury (a de-aged Samuel L Jackson!). The film follows her finding out who she really is and working out who really is the enemy. The effects are up to the MCU usual standard with good acting. The plot doesn't directly push the over-arching MCU story forward (it is set in 1995) but it does explain the end of Infinity War. 8/10
I'll place this at No. 10 in my list of the 21 MCU films:
1 Avengers Assemble
2 Thor: Ragnarok
3 Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 1
4 Avengers: Infinity War
5 Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2
6 Captain America: Winter Soldier
7 Dr Strange
8 Iron Man
9 Captain America: The First Avenger
10 Captain Marvel
11 Ant-Man and the Wasp
12 Avengers: Age of Ultron
13 Black Panther
14 Captain Americ: Civil Way
15 Ant Man
16 Thor
17 Spider-man: Homecoming
18 Thor: The Dark World
19 Iron Man 2
20 Iron Man 3
21 The Incredible Hulk

Well that's good to know. For a while you had me wondering. ;D
(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/Rush_UK_poster.jpeg)Agreed. An excellent portrayal of 2 professional drivers with very different personalities.
Chris Hemsworth as James Hunt is just perfect but the best performance goes for Daniel Brühl , a real incarnate Niki Lauda.
The sublime appearance of Olivia Wilde seems unreal , perfect Goddess.

I watched The Dirt on Netflix yesterday. Not really sure what to say. It was Okay, nothing great. Problem was I think for me was I already knew all the stories and such reading them in the Rock Magazines. Nothing shocking really. Acting was decent and the scenes dealing with Vince's daughter having Cancer was very emotional. 6.5/10

Thanks bud! But yes I easily can do just that! :D
I quite enjoyed Venom indeed but the term atrocious works for Deadpool quite well...too juvinile for my taste. AntMan was bit on the boring side but the humor was good and Paul Rudd was a good choice for the lead.
As for Spiderman, not only is Spiderman my all time least favourite Marvel superhero but those Raimi movies were bad and don't even get me started on Toby...good lord that is still something that should be a lecture in how NOT to cast in a casting school (if there is one...)... :D
.... apparently, you have not seen Spider-Man yet: Homecoming yet with this young teen as SM.
anyway , i assume we could be agree that Four Fantastics movies are clearly the worst Marvel movies !
Tonight was Netflix' The Highwaymen. Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson do an amazing job in their roles as the Texas Rangers that brought down Bonnie and Clyde. They are not made out to be angels, by any stretch of the term. They're cold-blooded, just like Bonnie and Clyde, but they do their killing for the law, not against it.

100% agree ! saw it few weeks ago too. this movie is one the best of the neo-western genre with The Homesman by and with Tommy Lee Jones.

Saw a review of that on a magazine the other day and thought that might be a good one...I just hope it'll get a bluray release soon too cause I'd love to see it.

An insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soapmaker form an underground fight club that evolves into something much, much more. Two complaints about the way this movie was made: 1) too much shifting scenes and camera movement, makes me dizzy, 2) excessively fast dialogue throughout the film. 4/10

It seems that this film is cult. Seen it only once and that was enough for me. I would never understand the excitement of this film despite the fact that I'm a fan of Norton and Pitt.

You're right, I can see that a tennis fan could really like this film. I'm not... so I didn't! ;)
(https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61S1xKn3IXL._SX342_.jpg)I remember watching the series when I was a kid.
I saw the first and n°2 this week .
Brian de Palma : really enjoyed the debut one with Jean Reno , evil as Hell and I' m a longtime fan of Kristin Scott Thomas. Too bad for Emmanuelle Béart , she was already way too much botoxed . Few years before , she was so beautiful. Anyway, great film and great acting.
8/10
John Woo : Despite the presence Thandie Newton and the Sevilla's sequence, this is easily the worst of the Tom Cruise/Ethan Hunt serie. The villain played by this clown named Dougray Scott is just laughable . Never noticed the christic pose of Cruise during the rock climbing intro.
3/10
Watched Silver Bullet last night. Not sure why I like this movie but I do and watch it every time it comes on.
Almost forgot, we saw Raising Arizona on rental the other day. While it is Coen brothers quirky, I feel as an early one of theirs they were still finding their feet. It's ok but nothing special. 6/10

Normally I will give it a week or two, but I don't want any spoilers or surprises, so I am going to a sold out showing. Yuck!

I'm just trying to stay clear of all major spoilers...I already a bit how the story will go on and how certain things that happened in part one will be...lets say rectified. So honestly the only real major spoiler will be who is gonna die for real in the end...but we kind of already know that too so that's actually not such a big spoiler either... ;D

I just don't think it requires much talent to tell a story where there are no restrictions from the real world. When I start to watch one of these, it's like, here we go again: to heck with the rules of nature, forget about the laws of physics, here is an insurmountable amount of energy to do what ever one's imagination can think up, blah, blah, blah.
The reason I thought that the movie Batman (Keaton & Nicholson) was terrific is because it was presented to an adult audience as though it could actually have happened. That takes more talent and more skill. The rest is just cartoonish fluff.

Fair enough I suppose but in all honesty movies aren't supposed to be imitations of real life...they are supposed to be something more.
The "Batman" I mentioned is certainly "something more" without the nonsense.

It is rather artsy, and I believe that it attempted to be as much a work of art as possible. I have studied symbolism but I am in the dark as to what the symbolism in this movie is all about.
For it's time it must have been groundbreaking as the special FX still maintain their quality all these years later.

I have this film and have seen it 5 or 6 times, but not in the last 5 years. It is number 19 on my Top 50. It is indeed a work of art, and the special FX are the best I have ever seen with respect to the year it was released (1968).
To properly discuss the symbolism and meaning of this film, I think, would require a thread just for that, which would be fine with me if others are interested. IMO this film is a masterpiece and one of the reasons Kubrick is my favorite director.
I watched this classic the other day, never really understood the movie, not even now.I watched it back in February, glad you finally got to watch it Thel.

good idea .
But they also influence behavior. The tribe of the monkeys threatened by the other tribe finally keeps their territory with the monkey who bravely touched the black object and acquired a form of intelligence by using a bone as a weapon. It is also an active accelerator of Evolution from the Bone intro to the Jupiter's confrontational situation with HAL 9000, one of the first personification of AI.
We saw Tolkien today, the drama which recounts the early years of JRR Tolkien, covering his love for language and his experiences in the First World War which influenced his writing of the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings.
It stars Nicholas Hoult as the author and Lily Collins as Edith the young lady he would eventually marry. It is quite good, a little formulaic in its approach maybe, but performances are good and the characters engaging. 7/10

I'm not expecting anything from this future "final" chapter when Disney just announced this week that 3 new films will be started, like a Spin-Off.

That's a pretty big deal here now as it was directed by a Finn...however the critics haven't liked it much though...and the audience even less I think... :D

There seems to be a fair amount of material coming out with that theme. I'm working through "Field of Blood", a book about violence in Congress in the years leading up to the Civil War.
Congressmen pulling knives and guns on each other on the debate floor was more and more frequent as the factions solidified and became less likely to work out compromises.

It was a different era. I believe dueling was still legal at that time.

I saw John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum yesterday. The action packed film starring regulars Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane and Lance Reddick, with a returning Laurence Fishburne and new faces Halle Berry, Angelica Huston, Asia Kate Dillon and Mark Dacascos. The film starts immediately after the events of Chapter 2 when Wick has been given an hour to escape before a bounty on his head is released. There follows 2+ hours of almost non-stop adranaline-fueled action where countless assassins try to kill Wick and claim that bounty.
It is one of the best action films ever, the choreographed fight scenes are (on the whole*) amazing, only the two Raid films do a better job IMO. While it often breaks the laws of physics and Wick survives injuries which should have killed him, you don't need logic here, its that much fun. Some of the one liners work too!! 9.5/10
* There's one fight in the glass penthouse which seemed poorly edited and didn't flow so well, but I can forgive that one flaw.

I agree with the Deadpool ones, even though I didn’t see them, I did enjoy the young x-men ones.Anyone plan on seeing The Dark Phoenix?
Not me...all these remakes and reboots and what nots have been more horrible than the next... The original trilogy is ace but these new versions...they suck balls each and every one of them.
And the reviews this has been getting...wow...could be the worst one yet. Gotta say they have done a great job ruining the whole X-Men thing. Which is why I loved The Gifted so much as that took things back to the old ways...eventhough it didn't even feature any X-men per se....
What is The Gifted? I never heard of it.

And then today we saw Men In Black: International, an attempt to reboot the franchise but without Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones. I've liked the franchise -- the first is great, yes the 2nd is a little meh, but the 3rd was good too -- and the inclusion of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thomas instead of the aforementioned leads didn't worry me particularly. There is the usual cast of aliens including the pint sized Pawney who I first thought was going be cringe-worthy but turns out to be one of the better characters in the film. Hemsworth still hasn't found a vehicle outside the MCU in which he excels and I fear this isn't it either. The films not dreadful, the plot is thin and the script is unoriginal. I hoped it would be better but despite some good bits it's weak. 6/10

I hope not, there seems to be insufficient interest in "sword & sorcery" films outside of Tolkien and GoT. And given the budgets needed to do the CGI properly no one will make any money. Even Warcraft had to rely on the far east gamers market to barely break even (I really enjoyed it though!).
EDIT: Ah, Crap! I just looked it up on IMDb... there are two sequels (Wrath of the Dragon God 2005 and Book of Vile Darkness 2012) as well as another Dungeons and Dragons films scheduled to come out in 2021!!!
^^Yeah there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in Sword & Sorcery movies these days. Far cry from the 80's when there seemed to be an abundance them.
Begs the question. What is your favourite Sword & Sorcery movies?
For me it's hard to go past the three Lord Of The Rings movies with The Return Of The King being my favourite of the three. I still haven't seen The Hobbit movies.
Outside of LOTR, growing up as a kid in the 80's, Conan The Barbarian was my absolute favourite. I also loved Highlander, Excalibur and DragonSlayer. Havent watched some of them in years though so not sure how they hold up today...I'd imagine not very well.
Thanks for answering Thel. Doesn't look like Sword & Sorcery movies are very popular around here. A couple of good choices from you there though.

^^^I get that. One tends to get caught up in the story of the film where a particular musical number works very well, which fools you into thinking that you have just heard a good song. The real test comes weeks later when you listen to the song again outside of the story. That's when you recognize the tune for what it is. This has happened to me several times before.
That's got one of my guilty pleasure songs in it... or so I thought.

Finally got around to seeing the whole of From Dusk 'Til Dawn... the horror / crime / fantasy from Robert Rodriguez starring George Clooney, Quentin Tarantina (who also wrote the script), Harvey Keitel and Julliette Lewis with a sensational cameo from Salma Hayek. I've seen the first half on late night TV but never managed to stay awake to the end of it!Selma Hayek was the bomb, she’s from Mexico beautiful lady.
A film of two halves, the first half is the Gecko brothers (Clooney/Tarantino) on the run and hi-jacking the RV with the Fuller family (Keitel/Lewis...) as they escape across the border to Mexico. Once there they head for the Titty Twister bar where the second horror/fantasy half of the film kicks in. Hayek plays the star dancer in the bar and in her bikini is as sexy as hell!
It's a gory/sweary blast. The effects are a little dated, but hey! it's 1996. 8/10

Hey Typhon, I know you're a Hammer House fan, have you ever seen Legend Of The Seven Golden Vampires?Yes, I own it. It is the 9th and final film in Hammer's Dracula film series, and IMO, the weakest.
They were showing the 2015 reboot of Fantastic Four on TV tonight. I hadn't watched it before because it was paned by critics as well as a couple of friends (both comic book fans) who saw it. But with little else to do I thought "why not?".Perhaps they should retitle the film the Less Than Average Four. :))
Starring Miles Teller, Jamie Bell, Kate Mara and Michael B Jordan, it is a reboot which goes back to their origins. The first problem is that it takes half the film before they get their powers... by which time you're bored. BUT the film gets less exciting when they have their powers. The film is dull, plodding along with wooden acting, laughable dialogue and average effects to a finale which would have seemed amaturish 20 years earlier. Comic book films have come such a long way in the last 15 years you wonder why the studio let this happen. I'll give it 3/10 because I usually like the leads and I have seen worse films.

We watched Booksmart on rental over the weekend. The directorial debut of Olivia Wilde, it's the story of two young ladies (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) who have spent their school career studying hard and avoiding distractions such as boyfriends and parties. On the eve of graduating from high school they realise that everyone they know who have been lazy and partied hard have also graduated and qualified for good colleges and universities... and that they have not gained anything by being "booksmart". On the night before graduation they vow to do all the things they've missed out on and the film follows their antics as they try to get to parties and attract boys (and girls in one case).I saw scenes from it on a recent flight and came to the same conclusion. Didn't look special to me...
It's ok, the film had really good reviews but to be honest it was pretty much like every other high school graduation film I've seen. It had its moments though. 6/10
I went to see Le Mans '66 this morning (called Ford v Ferrari in the US). The story of Fords attempt to make their brand more popular with younger drivers by creating a car which would defeat the dominant Ferrari at events such as Daytona and ultimately Le Mans. The film stars Matt Damon as car designer Carroll Shelby, Christian Bale as maverick but brilliant driver Ken Miles, with strong support from Tracy Letts (Henry Ford II), Catriona Balfe (Molly Miles) and Noah Jupe (Peter Miles). It's directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Wolverine and Logan among others).
It's a long film (2½ hours) but it covers a lot of ground including much of the Ford GT40s development and testing to its first races and a lengthy recreation of the '66 race at Le Mans. We see the Fprd executives almost sabotage their chances by making insane decisions mainly centred around wanting a different driver who was more of a "company" man. Although the main story centres on Ford beating Ferrari, Ferrari are almost non-existent in the story, a couple of scenes here and there and one on-track "dual".
The film is quite good, it does have a couple of slow sections and I found the race sequences themselve go on for too long. Damon and Bale are really good in this as too is Letts. The sound is a strong aspect to my enjoyment... lots of grunting engines and squealing tyres, as too was Ford not coming out of this "smelling of roses" due to the meddling by the execs. 8/10

Absolutely and Part 3 is even better I'd say! What a great trilogy. The fourth part had good moments too but it was ruined by the PG13 rating...and 5 had good action and back to the R but the story wasn't very good to be honest.
Planning to give a look at The Two Popes on Netflix. Johnathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins look powerful in it.

Two strangers' lives become inextricably bound together after a devastating plane crash. I'm not a big Schwarzenegger fan, but I have to admit he does a good job here. 7/10
I was dragged to see Cats this afternoon. I've not seen the stage version but I'm familiar with some of the songs. This film has been panned by the critics although the audience is a little more foregiving. It is directed by Tom Hooper (The Kings Speech / Les Miserables) and has a good cast including Judi Dench, Ian McKellan, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson and newcomer Franchesca Hayward who plays Victoria the focus of the story.
The story centres around the "Jellicles Ball" which is a yearly contest to see who gets to travel to the heavy side. I'm not entirely sure what the heavy side is, it might be passing into heaven, it might be a resurrection, it might just be a new life!
I'm not sure what the critics don't like about the film, sure it is no classic, but it is based on one of the most beloved stage musicals of all time... the songs are performed quite well, and the sets (while looking a bit stagey) are good too. The cast all have CGI fur which I think bothered some critics but didn't bug me in the slightest.
It's not that bad. 6/10

Based on real events, the U.S. government decides to go after an agro-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, vice president-turned-informant Mark Whitacre. The only problem, Whitacre is a habitual liar. Very funny movie, both intentionally and unintentionally. 8/10

One of Hammer Studio's last and most eerie films, with some big stars in the cast. You can even get a glimpse of Black Sabbath's Born Again cover in this one. >:D An American occult novelist (Richard Widmark) battles to save the soul of a young girl (Nastassja Kinski) from a group of Satanists, led by an excommunicated priest (Christopher Lee), who plan on using her as the representative of the Devil on Earth. 7.5/10
I watched Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker yesterday, and it was a good film. The final film in the trilogy of trilogies sort of wraps most things up... but that's not to suggest it will be the last we hear from the Star Wars universe! All the main characters return (although for Carrie Fisher it is with spare scenes she shot for the 2 earlier films). We also see the return of Emperor Palpatine and Lando Calrissian, and new characters played by Richard E Grant and Dominic Monaghan.
The plot evolves around finding a "key" which will unlock a secret part of the universe where the Sith have a huge battle fleet. As always the good guys go planet hopping visiting a variety of interesting places. The effects are up to the usual standard you would expect from this franchise.
It has its flaws and some of the story is plainly nonsense, but it does feel more like a Star Wars story than The Last Jedi (which I liked a lot also), but the characters work well together and the imagery is great. 8/10
@Elves
I did see your post, but to be honest I'm not as "nerdy" about the detail that many of the hard core fans are, I couldn't tell you if Palpatine had kids or not, I just enjoy the films for what they are.
I enjoyed all the recent films but if I had one gripe about the trilogy it is that there wasn't an overarching plot line to connect them all.
Hey, at least they didn't have a scene with a latte in it, like in Game of Thrones.
Hey, at least they didn't have a scene with a latte in it, like in Game of Thrones.
I watched bits and pieces of a couple of Game of Thrones episodes (my wife was big into it). But I have to question the latte. Who's to say they didn't have a Starbucks (or whatever) that served refreshing lattes? I mean to say, they had dragons, undead creatures, and magic. Why not latte as well?
lol

Black gangsters in 1930 Harlem fights Dutch Schultz who is trying to horn in on their numbers racket. Good strong acting all around. 8/10

Based on actual events, 4 American soldiers and one Brit fighting in Europe during World War II struggle to return to Allied territory after being separated from U.S. forces during the historic Malmedy Massacre. Excellent authenticity. You feel like you are really there. Good film for the entire family. No unnecessary gore or cursing. Great depiction of what brave men must endure whilst fighting a war. 9/10

I've never liked her. She always oozes that "ooh I am so good, I got an oscar, I am the best" arrogant vibe in everything she does. The word "bitch" comes to mind every time I see her. One of the most overrated actresses of our time. I usually go out of my way to avoid all movies she is in...:hankhill:

I can understand bro ' 8) !
but I admit. I've been in love with Cate Blanchett since the Lord of the Rings. Confirmation with Babel, Benjamin Button, Hanna and Ragnarok.
An atypical cold beauty. She has something special.

Very good movie. Joaquin Phoenix is possessed by the character. A rare performance ... but I must say that scenes of uncontrolled laughter are too insistent end up annoying me. The film is really disturbing. For the rest, we can now forget Heath Ledger ,far too overated for my taste. Joaquin Phoenix reaches another dimension.

I bought this one last week or so from Amazon. Yet to watch it, though I will see to it that I do soon!!
Great to see you around Tyr66!!! Hope that you are well.
The Personal History of David Copperfield is an adaptation of the Charles Dickins classic by Armando Iannucci (best known for director/writer/creator of The Death of Stalin, Veep, The Thick Of It among much more), and is a racially blind retelling of the story, indeed 4 or 5 of the main cast are black including Dev Patel as the titular David Copperfield. There is a fine supporting cast including Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Paul Whitehouse and Ben Whishaw. The story tells the life from birth to adulthood of Copperfield, reflecting the wealth and poverty of the era and the people he meets. I don't know if the original book was a tragi-comedy in the way this film is, but it is a very funny film but with liberal elememts of the tragic. Great performances all round. 8/10

To be fair Mandela was a real person not a fictional character, and there were blacks in Britain in the 1840s but maybe not as many as suggested in this film. More pertinent is something like James Bond, who very well could be black after Daniel Craigs last outing.

It has been a long time since I have read Dickens, but if memory serves I believe the PH of DC was somewhat of an autobiographical work, and Dickens was white.

I own it. Even though it is not an Amicus or Hammer film, I have it because of Lee and Cushing. It is a decent flim (7/10). This is the cover of mine.

#16 on my Top 50. :beerbang:
RAMBO - The Last Blood
John J. Rambo has been living a quiet life on his father's old farm with the care taker of his father and her grand daughter Gabrielle for the past 10 years trying to cope with his demons. He has grown to love them like they'd be his own family which he never had. Then Garbrielle wants to find her father who lives in Mexico, and against Rambo's wishes she goes only to be captured by members of a vicious human trafficer drug cartel. Rambo goes to her rescue which doesn't quite go as planned.
After facing a tragedy that touches him closer than anything before Rambo must one last time unleash the beast within and this time the war comes to his home, which he will defend the only way that he can. With the utmost brutality and passion.
This is the most dramatic and touching out of all the Rambo movies. This time it is personal.
Sylvester Stallone portrays the agony that Rambo endures here more touchingly than ever before. The undertone of this movie is not action but sadness and pain. You can sense and feel the profound sadness and loss in every single shot of Sly's face. And it makes you feel it too.
There is no mindless action here, there is only actions brought out of loss and pain. Rambo morphs from a perfect soldier to an angel of vengeance. Showing the vicious drug cartel what true justified revenge looks like...and it's not pretty.
After the bigger flashier and grander scale of war in movies 2-4 this bring things back to more close quarter combat with Rambo doing what he does best...close and personal (in both meanings of the word) gorilla warfare which was present in the first movie.
The violence here is extreme, but even in all of it's goriness it all serves a purpose once again. Fighting pure evil you must be part evil yourself. You can't help but smile at all the ingenious booby traps and ways Rambo finds to kill off the bad guys one by one while blasting The Doors' Five To One on his stereo system. That whole scene is pure violence art there is no other way around it.
A perfect ending to a near perfect movie series. The ultimate swan song to one of the greatest action icons and anti-heroes of all time, Rambo CAN be a monster if he is pushed into it. But he NEVER draws first blood...but he will be the one who will draw the last blood.

Got this at the local Walmart for 5 bucks. Now the film itself was a lot more entertaining than the reviews and I was actually impressed with some of it. I hear that the other Wolverine movies are much better, like the very well regarded Logan from a few years back. 7.5/10
LOGAN
In 2029 the battered and bruised Logan is making a living as a limo driver and taking care of aging and ill dr. Charles Xavier. He comes in contact with a young girl who seems to resemble himself more than he'd like to believe and is then forced to protect her against an evil corporation who is responsible for the near extinction of all mutants.
Hugh Jackman once again absolutely shines in the lead, maybe now more than ever, but even so he is outshined by the brilliance of Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles. Who also stated that it was this movie that re-ignited his passion of acting and is the reason he wanted to return as Jean-Luc Picard once again.
Dafne Keen as the young Laura also does a remarkable job.
The undertone of the movie is quite melacholic and nothing like The X Men trilogy. Same goes for the R-rating. In fact this movie is quite brutal, unsuitably so even, for a superhero movie. Also the frequent use of the f-word is quite uncharacteristic for a superhero movie and seems bit out of place.
The action here is quite bit smaller and less flashy than what you'd expect from a movie like this...actually that goes with almost everything here. The best moments in the movie are some of the more humorous interactions between Logan and Charles as well as some action sequences where the old Wolverine shows his claws just bit more brutally than ever before.
This is a mixed bag, there are some really great elements that unfortunately get overshadowed by the uncharacteristic elements. Also this is probably the first Marvel movie that does not follow the post credit teaser of the previous installment which also was a huge letdown.
That all being said in it's finest moments this was a good swansong for two of the most iconic characters of The X Men universe. But even so you do end up missing the original vision of Bryan Singer of what the X Men were and honestly the mighty Wolverine and the most powerful mutant who ever was would have both deserved a better finale.

A tight-knit team of rising investigators, along with their supervisor, is suddenly torn apart when they discover that one of their own teenage daughters has been brutally murdered. Fine performance by Roberts. 7/10
Hey KDC you planning on seeing Color Of Outer Space?
As a big Lovecraft fan I am rather interested in this one...so I'm thinking is it worth seeing or not...as ticket prices here are insane gotta pick and choose which movies to see in the theater and which to buy on Bluray.
Being a Lovecraft fanatic I have looked all over town for a copy on Bluray but the only place that can get it wants 38 dollars for it because it is an "import". Fuck that

You might have to bite the bullet and buy it on Amazon it's about $15 for the BluRay.

I'm a big fan of DeNiro, which reminds me I must finish watching the Irishman.
Saw The Joker with Joaquin Phoenix, thought it was a great movie and Joaquin was superb, I’m glad they killed that son of a bitch Deniro piece of shit. You need to stop with the spoilers dude. I’ve seen The Joker but others might not have. You fucked up The Rise Of Skywalker for me.

Oh shit, so sorry Jack man , I won’t mention details anymore, it wasn’t intentional. Sorry.
I meant in the movie Deniro was a piece of shit not in real life of course, he was using the guy to get laughs, making fun of him like a fool, he deserved it, that’s what I meant.
Again my apologies bro.

Last two movies I saw in theaters was Star Wars 9 and Sonic. 9 gets a C+, Sonic gets an A, surprisingly good.

This was OK. The acting was a bit off and the script was rather weak, but in it's defense it had stellar special effects.
The idea behind this one could have made a better movie had it been in more competent hands. 6.5/10
