A down-on-his-luck music manager discovers a teenage girl with an extraordinary voice while on a music tour in Afghanistan and takes her to Kabul to compete on the popular television show, Afghan Star.  Though a little slow at times, the film has a few good scenes and I was left with a pleasant feeling. 7/10

We watched Booksmart on rental over the weekend. The directorial debut of Olivia Wilde, it's the story of two young ladies (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) who have spent their school career studying hard and avoiding distractions such as boyfriends and parties. On the eve of graduating from high school they realise that everyone they know who have been lazy and partied hard have also graduated and qualified for good colleges and universities... and that they have not gained anything by being "booksmart". On the night before graduation they vow to do all the things they've missed out on and the film follows their antics as they try to get to parties and attract boys (and girls in one case).

It's ok, the film had really good reviews but to be honest it was pretty much like every other high school graduation film I've seen. It had its moments though. 6/10
I saw scenes from it on a recent flight and came to the same conclusion. Didn't look special to me...

I went to see Le Mans '66 this morning (called Ford v Ferrari in the US). The story of Fords attempt to make their brand more popular with younger drivers by creating a car which would defeat the dominant Ferrari at events such as Daytona and ultimately Le Mans. The film stars Matt Damon as car designer Carroll Shelby, Christian Bale as maverick but brilliant driver Ken Miles, with strong support from Tracy Letts (Henry Ford II), Catriona Balfe (Molly Miles) and Noah Jupe (Peter Miles). It's directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma, Wolverine and Logan among others).

It's a long film (2½ hours) but it covers a lot of ground including much of the Ford GT40s development and testing to its first races and a lengthy recreation of the '66 race at Le Mans. We see the Fprd executives almost sabotage their chances by making insane decisions mainly centred around wanting a different driver who was more of a "company" man. Although the main story centres on Ford beating Ferrari, Ferrari are almost non-existent in the story, a couple of scenes here and there and one on-track "dual".

The film is quite good, it does have a couple of slow sections and I found the race sequences themselve go on for too long. Damon and Bale are really good in this as too is Letts. The sound is a strong aspect to my enjoyment... lots of grunting engines and squealing tyres, as too was Ford not coming out of this "smelling of roses" due to the meddling by the execs. 8/10

I agree about the sounds in the film. I LOVED THEM ALL! Great engine noises, and in a big theater, they really, really come alive!

Netflix decided that because I'm in Chile, I can't watch the shows I've downloaded.  >:(

Went with in-flight movies because international flights take an hour to board...

Started with "Battle of the Sexes", which was about a young woman discovering her lesbianism in the early 70s. There's a tennis match subplot, which I much preferred... the movie was like "Office Space" in that I was there for what was advertised, not the romance part. I skipped half the movie as a result, as I was wanting more of the politics and the tennis. Those parts came across almost as filler scenes, except for Steve Carrell's parts, which were excellent.

If the romance crap had been cut back to just quick scenes of BJK and the hairdresser being a bit too close, we would have gotten the point and another 40-50 mins would have been freed up for the drama.

After that disappointment, I went with "The Big Lebowski." That film has held up well. And, of course, the immortal quotes from the film are great fun.

Post World War II, a British colonel and his wife are assigned to live in Hamburg during the post-war reconstruction, but tensions arise with the German who previously owned the house.  A good story with fine performances. 7.5/10

We went to see Honey Boy, the semi-autobigraphical film written by Shia LaBeouf. It stars LaBeouf as a version of his own father with Lucas Hedges playig the son at 22 and Noah Jupe playig the son at 12. As an aside it's the second film this week I've seen Noah Jupe in (see Le Mans '66) and he's produced two excellent performances... this kid has talent.

We see Hedges as the older kid in rehab trying to come to terms with his abusive father which has given him PTSD, while in the flash back to his earlier years Jupe and LaBeouf are shacked up in a motel where the father is living off the son who is developing as a young actor. We see the father tackling his own addiction demons while being abusive to his son.

The performances are good and LaBeouf has come a long way since his apparent breakdown a few years ago. The story is slow paced and not entirely my sort of film but it's not bad. 6/10

Magnificent production and a well told story of the invaders from the north.  Filmed in the fjords of Norway, this film has it all.  Great battle scenes on land and sea, a strong cast, the siege of a castle, and is the most historically accurate depiction of Vikings on film.  I only wish Billy was around so I could hear his opinion of it. 9/10

Absolutely and Part 3 is even better I'd say! What a great trilogy. The fourth part had good moments too but it was ruined by the PG13 rating...and 5 had good action and back to the R but the story wasn't very good to be honest.

Just a brilliant film. Probably my 2nd favourite from Tarantino. Col. Hans Landa is one of if not the greatest movie villians of all time.
