Visually successful but so terribly boring. Too bad.

We saw A Star Is Born this afternoon... one which the girlfiend wanted to watch. It wasn't that good but there were some good things about it. The acting was fine but the story in the last act was a little unconvincing. But Bradley Cooper can sing quite well and Lady GaGa can act quite well. Of the songs there were a couple of early songs which were pretty good but the later songs were quite forgettable. 6/10

Not a bad movie, but it pales in comparison to the Arnold version. 7/10

We saw Mom and Dad on rental today... a horror/comedy/drama with Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair playing the titular Mom and Dad. Something happens across the globe which causes previously loving parents to become homicidal and try and kill their kids (but not other peoples kids!). There are some humorous moments but overalll the scares are pretty non existent and the film was generally quite amatuerish. 4/10

Lame story, but well done action scenes that keep this moving along nicely. 6/10

I really enjoyed that film, as well. Spike Lee in top form with that film.

Last movie I saw... totally connected to my exploration of things Slade. Take it as a serious "Spinal Tap" in that what's portrayed pretty much happened to Slade or bands that Slade knew about. Considered one of the best movies about rock and roll bands.

We saw Widows in the cinema and The Commuter on rental this weekend.

Widows is a re-working of the 1980s Lynda La Plante TV series of the same name. Relocated from London to Chicago, the beginning of the film shows a heist going wrong with the getaway vehicle exploding in a ball of flames... their wives are left pennyless and decide to do a heist that one of their husbands was already planning. Starring Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki with Colin Farrell and Robert Duval as corrupt father/son politicians and a Cameo by Liam Neeson.

It won't be for everyone as director Steve McQueen has gone for of a character study rather than an action / crime / drama, but there are some really good performances and when there are some action scenes they are quite well done. 7/10

The Commuter is a fun - if a little stupid - action film. Set on a commuter train Liam Neeson is tasked with identifying a person on the train before it gets to a certain station. During the course of the film he discovers that there is more to this than he first thought. It is quite dumb but the action is well done, but if you have seen Neeson's Non-Stop then you pretty much know the plot! 6/10

Kind of a remake of The Big Chill with a weaker script. 4/10

If you get the chance, seek out the WWI documentary They Shall Not Grow Old which was put together by Peter Jackson and his team. It's only been released in the UK as far as I am aware, a brief run in cinemas last week before being shown on TV this last Sunday. It might get steamed or shown on TV in other countries.

Anyway the war museum provided Jackson with loads of archive film and asked him to do something different with it. He duly obliged by creating a visually spectacular documentary, taking the jerky black and white footage, smoothing out the jerkiness and adding realistic colour. The narration is recordings of old soldiers recorded in the the 60s and synched with the images being shown. It's an amazing documentary which gave me a new appreciation of what it was like during The Great War. 10/10.

Peter Jackson interviewed by film critic Mark Kermode:
