Saw the new Halloween on Thursday night. What an awesome movie. It is as good as the original and way better than Zombie's version. Jamie Lee Curtis was amazing. So glad she decided to do this one. Nice combo of scares, gore and a couple laughs. Probably going again this weekend.

What was so awesome about? It explained nothing, they took the sibling factor away, the guy waits 40 years to escape and just kills with no plot as to what drives him to go back after Lorie Strode who is no longer related to him.

It sucked big time.

Well that's your opinion. Why does there have to be a back story? Michael Myers is pure evil as explained in the first film. Not knowing what makes him this way to me is more terrifying.  Sibling factor was a bullshit plot line to make a second film, a film that John Carpenter didn't really want to do. They said they were ignoring all sequels. He doesn't simply wait to start his killings,he waits till he has an opportunity to escape and go back to the person who put him in the hospital and escaped his killings. IMO it was an awesome film.

After 40 years a recalibration as they call it and no explanation as to what makes Michael evil? Just the same redundant killings.

At least The Curse Of Michael Myers tried to explain it with the curse of thorn and some cult helping him and possibly casting the spell on Michael.

Finally got around to seeing The House with the Clock in its Walls today. It's ok, the imagery and effects are quite good, the acting is fine and the story is ok if a little predictable. There is no sense of threat and the final "solution" was disrupted way too simply. A seemingly important character (the young girl at school) never developed into anything important and could have cut completely without changing the story at all. I did like the armchair that was like the family dog and the topiay griffin had some funny moments. 7/10

Watched Salyut 7 on the flight to NYC today.

AWESOME MOVIE, DUDES!

If you liked The Martian and Apollo 13, this is right up there with them. Excellent effects, tastefully utilized, particularly for the amazing sunrises from space. The film is based on the actual recovery of the Salyut 7 station, considered one of the most incredible of space engineering efforts. Although there are some invented threats to the mission emerging from the USA, I chalk those up to general paranoia the Russians have about Americans - and then get into the film, which has lots going for it.

Available on Amazon Prime.

Watched Netflix' The Polka King last night. Basically, it's Bernie with a Polish accent. Normal guy wants to be liked, bends the rules, gets liked, then strange stuff happens after he gets caught. Also based on a true story.

If you liked Bernie and especially Jack Black's immersion into the character, you'll probably also like another helping of it in this movie. If you're done with Jack Black, there's nothing more to see here, turn around.

I do enjoy Black's character explorations and he does a marvelous job here. The story is plenty convoluted, and I had to read up about the real Jan Lewan after I saw the film. Wild stuff.

^^^ I saw that a few weeks back. I quite like the cast but to be fair it was a lacklustre movie. I think he genuinely intended to pay back the investors he was just very naive.

Agree on the lackluster part. It's free with Netflix, so I'm getting a free movie, basically. :)

The real Jan Lewan was actually *glad* to get busted, because it meant he wouldn't have to lie anymore. Crazy but true...

Set in the 1930s, a former veterinary student takes a job in a travelling circus and falls in love with the ringmaster's wife.  Good performances all around. 7.5/10

Minority Report

Alas! despite the ingenious scenario, this film has a soporific effect on me at each test and I think I have never seen the end ...
No doubt the boring lengths of these visions of Agatha and those endless Cruise family's hologram scenes.  Something doesn't work in this film which is still a very good action-anticipation movie .

We saw Bohemian Rhapsody this afternoon. It's a very good film although it has some flaws. A biopic of Queen from their formation in 1970 thru to their appearance at Live Aid in '85, but it focuses more on Freddie Mercury than the other members. It's a little lightweight, I think Sacha Baron Cohen dropped out because he wanted it to be a "warts and all" film but Brian May and Roger Taylor didn't! The performaces from the leads - particularly Rami Malek as Freddie - are great.

I much preferred the scenes with the band in concert or in the studio rather than the shenanigans surrounding Mercury's private life which was heavily sanitised to get a more friendly rating... much to my relief!!! My only gripes were a couple glitches with the chronology of the songs: Fat Bottomed Girls was shown being played in concert around 74/75 when it was only recorded in 78 and We Will Rock You was shown as being recorded in 1980 when it actually came out in 1977!

Minor gripes aside it is a really good film, and the sound of the concert performaces in our screen was awesome. 8/10
