"Mixed Reviews"... it's got 94% on Metacritic! They don't get much better than that!

The 3½ hour runtime does put me off a little, so having it on Netflix is fine I can probably take a couple of evenings to watch it.

Yep. I normally try not to read too many reviews for movies I'm pumped about but couldn't help myself with this one and they've been overwhelmingly positive for this. Huge accolades.

3.5 hours for an epic Scorsese gangster film with Pacino, De Niro & Pesci in it is a piece of cake for me.

I don't know what that is...

Anyways I just reported what I've read and heard from people.

Also I've never given a rats ass what "critics" say about movies...I rather read opinions from real people who've seen it.

Metacritic is a site which has the average of all the reviews which have been published so far.

But yes, I know what you say about critics; I've seen great film which the critics have panned, and watched in bemusement at garbage which critics say is supposed to be a modern day classic! I take the critics opinions with a pinch of salt, but they can be spot on... more often than you think! ;)

But if you're more interested in the opinion of everyday Joes then it is at 8.7/10 on IMDb and has a user rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I don't believe in those either. Since those are open for everyone people can just score what ever they want without ever even seeing the movie. Also I think it was atleast few years ago that IMDB had it's database hacked by bots that gave thousands upon thousands of votes on hundreds of movies there...so that too is possible.

There are few critics that tend to get things right...heck Rambo Last Blood got few 4 star reviews as well that were pretty spot on. But majority are those kinds of people that only give good reviews on dramas and automatically bad reviews to action and those are the kinds of assholes that I truly hate.

A man who was shot, robbed and imprisoned, returns to steal a large gold shipment from the man who wronged him. The gold is transported in an armored stage coach, the War Wagon.  Good story with some nice humor thrown in.  John Wayne and Kirk Douglas work great together.  I read in the production notes that director Burt Kennedy gave up half of his salary for the film in order to get Kirk Douglas aboard, because the films budget was not large enough to pay 2 major stars. 8.5/10

As regards critics, I do like to survey what they say. If I'm in to watch a particular actor and the critics praise the performance in spite of an average plot, I'm in.

But if lots of people are saying a film's a stinker, I stay away, as I'm likely to come to the same conclusion on my own.

So mixed reviews for an epic with loads of good actors that I can pause and take in installments? Yes, please!

Tell you what, we might watch it tonight and, if so, I'll report on it later this week. No spoilers, but if I switch it off to go watch reruns of The IT Crowd, you'll be the first to know... and it's possible my reasons for liking or disliking the film could be opposite to what folks here want in a movie. We'll see.

I watched Borley Rectory on rental today. It's sort of a docu-drama, part animation, part live-action film telling the story of what is supposedly the most haunted house in England. It follows the investigations of Harry Price and V.C. Wall -- paranornal investigators -- and is set during the 1920s and 30s. Reece Shearsmith is probably the best known of the actors.

It looks great as if the film reels were actually made in the period depicted, it's all dark shadows with barely visible figures, banging doors and eerie noises. I must say it is very atmospheric... but not very scary! It is also quite slow, even taking into account its 75minute runtime.

It's an interesting story, beautifully made but could have been better. 7/10

I'm an hour and ten minutes into The Irishman. This thing cooks along, nice and easy. This film is all about storytelling and characters, and I am enjoying it very much so far. It's not for the theater as much as it is for the home. It watches very well with pauses, such as I'm taking now for supper.

Just finished it. Excellent acting, including what has to be Joe Pesci's finest performance. The Irishman is definitely worth watching. Perfectly paced, definitely a masterpiece from Martin Scorsese.

The wannabe sons of mobsters go to a remote town in the Midwest, and get themselves into more trouble than anyone could anticipate.  Good story and performances. 8/10

A ticket scalper wants to make one last big deal on the pope's visit to finally do something worthwhile about his relationship.  Nice little story and many interesting characters. 7.5/10

I saw Frozen 2 the other day... the Disney Animations sequel to the monster hit from 2013. Once again starring the vocal talents of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell and Josh Gad, adding this time the likes of Alfred Molina and Evan Rachel Wood. This time the sisters head north after Elsa hears a calling she can't ignore (which sounds remarkably like the keyboards at the end of Lonely is the Word!), where they come across a place shrouded in an impenetrable mist, and Elsa gets to discover where her powers come from.

The story is quite good actually, what let's the film down are the songs, I'd prefer no songs, but if you have to have songs at least make them good songs. 6/10 but it could have been an 8!

We watched Booksmart on rental over the weekend. The directorial debut of Olivia Wilde, it's the story of two young ladies (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) who have spent their school career studying hard and avoiding distractions such as boyfriends and parties. On the eve of graduating from high school they realise that everyone they know who have been lazy and partied hard have also graduated and qualified for good colleges and universities... and that they have not gained anything by being "booksmart". On the night before graduation they vow to do all the things they've missed out on and the film follows their antics as they try to get to parties and attract boys (and girls in one case).

It's ok, the film had really good reviews but to be honest it was pretty much like every other high school graduation film I've seen. It had its moments though. 6/10

When a new neighbor moves into "Widows' Peak," so called due to the prevalent marital status of the residents, she has to contend with an odd neighbor and nosey women.  A few laughs. 6.5/10
