When a man's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts.  Good suspense. 7.5/10

the performance of Paul Dano is breathtaking ... like the final scene.
I would give it a solid 8.5 / 10.

INTO THE STORM

A group of unlucky storm chasers gets caught in an area which gets littered with tornadoes and instead of fighting to get the perfect shot on camera they get to fight for their lives with a family of town's people caught in the storm's path.

This was advertized as a modern day Twister but sadly it falls behind on almost every step. The acting is bit stiff and the dialogue isn't quite up to par and the documentary style of filming is interesting but sadly it takes so much away from the visuals it at times becomes almost annoying. The idea most likely was to incorporate the viewer with the action but honestly it did not work. Movies like these shouldn't be made to look small, but they should be made to look BIG. Tornadoes are BIG and violent and the most awe inspriring spectacle of mother nature and need to be captured as such.

Sarah Wayne Callies (from Prison Break and The Walking Dead) did the best she could as did Matt Walsh (From the brilliant Veep) but the rest of the cast was not really present at all.

I went into this movie wanting to absolutely love it, especially considering just how much I loved Twister, but I came out with a bit of a meh feeling really. The visuals weren't all that great either...granted the ending wedge was beautiful the rest wasn't quite up to par..not even with Twister and it was filmed 20 years earlier.

All in all this could have been a fantastic movie, with bit more budget on the effects, better storyline and better acting it could have been...now it turned out to be and EF2 instead of an EF5.

We saw The Lion King this weekend... it is fine!

It is a supposedly live action remake of the 1994 Disney classic. I say "supposedly live action" because there is no actual live action in it as it is entirely CGI (For instance Jungle Book at least had an actual living, breathing boy playing Mowgli). I'm not really complaining as the photo-realism of the animals is flawless.

I saw the original a few years ago and although I don't remember much about it I do remember thinking it was fine but nothing special, but as far as I can remember the plot is almost completely unchanged in this re-imagining. James Earl Jones reprises his role as Mufasa, Danny Glover plays the adult Simba and Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the villain Scar. There are roles for Beyonce, Seth Rogen, John Oliver and a bunch of voice actors I don't recognise.

What I will say is the photo-realism is a distraction: you're looking at the images in awe and forget the story, but when the animals talk and their lips move in an unatural way that is also a distraction. I spent some time trying to work out which adult lioness was the mother and which was the friend... because -- as with real lions -- they all look the same!! The songs were okay except for the one that Beyonce sung which was utterly ruined.

Ok, it looks absolutely spectacular, the story I suspect is a frame for frame remake. I probably prefer it a little bit over the original because of the realism even with the aforementioned drawbacks. 7/10

A young American woman goes to the south of France to do her thesis research on a recently deceased composer, staying with his eccentric relatives, who are hiding a strange secret.  This is a little known Hammer film.  6.5/10

Deaths abound in this artsy Mob movie based off of a Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs. Great acting jobs by 90% of the cast made for a well done movie even if the story was over the top. 8/10

In an attempt to discover the composition of meteors, 3 make-shift astronauts are sent out into space in 3 specially designed rockets. Their mission is to capture a meteor and bring it to Earth.  The film starts out okay, but then some silly ideas enter the story, like:
  a) each rocket has a flap which opens near the nose that they call a "meteor scoop".  :))
  b) 12 civilians from around the country are chosen because of their high intellect.  As part of testing, they are each placed in a centrifuge to see who can withstand 12g.  :o  Nearly all people pass out at 6g, while today's fighter pilots are trained to survive 9g.

I guess in 1954 they knew a lot less about space travel. 4/10

With the ratings dropping for a wilderness-themed television show, 2 animal fans go to the Andes Mountains in search of Bigfoot to try and save their show.  A couple of laughs, but not nearly enough. 4/10

It’s also loosely based on Whitey Bulger, Irish Mobster From Massachusetts. The mobster  Black Mass was based on.

Black Mass is excellent.  I'm not a big Johnny Depp fan, but he was superb in that film.

I added this little known Amicus production to my collection recently.  Had never seen it before.  A man who has been in a coma since infancy is awakened.  Very well done with a great script.  This film is a real gem by Amicus. 8.5/10
