We saw Yesterday... err... yesterday! A solid film with a high... if slightly far-fetched... concept.

Basically, a singer (Hamish Patel) with few hopes for stardom is hit by a bus at the same time that there is an unexplained 12 second blackout across the globe. After he wakes up in hospital he soon discovers that no-one except him knows of the music of the Beatles. He starts singing the songs he know and in no time he is heralded as the greatest sonwriter ever and becomes a superstar. All the time his childhood friend, manager and will-they-wont-they love interest (Lily James) gets left behind, as he loses control of his career.

Directed by Danny Boyle off a Richard Curtis script, there is nice support from Ed Sheeran (suprisingly so - very self-depricating) and Kate McKinnon as the balsy American agent. There are some quite nice touches, like when he googles other groups and is relieved that The Rolling Stones are still there but not surprised that Oasis seem to have also been forgotten!.

It's an ok film there are some funny moments but the plot is quite straightforward, the songs are well performed. 7/10

A former valedictorian quits her reporter job in New York and returns to the place she last felt happy: her childhood home in Connecticut.  She gets work as a lifeguard and starts a dangerous relationship with a troubled teenager. 6.5/10

I watched Can You Ever Forgive Me on rental over the weekend. The true story of Lee Israel -- a minor author of autobiographies who falls on hard times -- who inadvertently discovers she has a skill for forging and imbelishing literary memorabillia, and then selling them for large amounts of money. A generally serious film it stars Melissa McCarthy and Richard E Grant (both Oscar nominated this year).

Whilst the film is quite interesting and the acting is pretty good, it's a bit of a "throw-away" film which won't last long in my memory. 6/10

This was a good way to kill an hour and a half. Surprisingly the comedy still holds up and there is a ton of nostalgia seeing it these years later. 8/10

I love the original and I truly enjoyed this modern take on that heist movie. 7.5/10

In the prehistoric past, a young man struggles to return home after being separated from his tribe during a buffalo hunt.  Pretty good CG effects. 6.5/10

We saw Spider-Man: Far From Home this afternoon, the end of the third phase of the MCU which continues straight on from Avengers: Endgame.

Basically, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and some of his classmates go on a science trip to Europe. Peter wants a simple, uneventful trip so that he muusty up the courage to tell MJ (Zendaya) how he feels about her. At the same time some "elemental" monsters from a different dimension have attacked the Earth and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) from the same dimension knows how to defeat them but needs Spider-Man's reluctant help.

It's an enjoyable film, humour and good effects a-plenty, and the plot is solid. It feels a little light-weight though compared to recent MCU films which it in no way compares. 7/10

The story of the life and academic career of the pioneer Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and his friendship with his mentor, Professor G.H. Hardy.  Being a mathematician myself, it is hard for me not to love this movie.  But I think anyone would enjoy it. 8.5/10

A theatre director struggles with his work, and the women in his life, as he creates a life-size replica of New York City inside a warehouse as part of his new play.  An ugly and unentertaining movie. 3/10
