Just saw the documentary "Echo Canyon" on Netflix, about the Laurel Canyon community in LA back in the mid-60s. All the folk rock stuff with the Byrds and stuff. It was really interesting, made me want to check out more of those bands, not just their classic rock hits.

I went to watch Zombieland: Double Tap this morning, the comedy horror sequel set 10 years after the original. All the main cast return for this Woody Harrelson (Tallahasee), Emma Stone (Witchita), Abigail Breslin (Little Rock) and Jesse Eisenberg (Columbus). They are joined by a bunch of survivors including Zoey Deutch as the gorgeous - but dumb - Maddison, Luke Wilson as Albuquerque and Rasario Dawson as Nevada.

The laughs start from the beginning... in the opening credits the Columbia logo Torch Lady is attacked by zombies but she beats them off with said torch, and the humour comes thick fast from then on. The zombies for much of the film are just a back drop to the character interactions, but when they come to the fore it is clear that they have "evolved" and become quite dangerous. While there's no real plot, the story basically revolves around the main cast hunting for Little Rock after she goes off with a hippy, and looking for Graceland.

The film is surprisingly gory and foul-mouthed and there are many references to other zombie films. I really enjoyed it. 8.5/10

I was dragged to see Last Christmas yesteday, the Rom Com written by Emma Thompson and directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy, Heat among others) and starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh and Emma Thompson.

The plot is simple, it's Christmas, a clumsy shop girl (Clarke) who has health issues, is attracted to a stranger (Golding) who she keeps running into but then disappears for days, she reluctantly has to move back home with her mother (Thompson). She's always on the verge of losing her job but she sets her boss (Yeoh) up with a customer she is obviously attracted to. All this plays out to a backdrop of George Michael music.

I'm not the target audience for this sort of film, the girlfiend loved it though. I know it's had some poor reviews but I didn't think it was so bad. Half the problem with the critics I've heard, is that the twist at the end is hinted at in one of the trailers... I'm not sure that's a reason to mark a film down. Anyway, as I said, it's not really my sort of film so I would give it a 5/10... the girlfiend would probably give it a 10/10!

LOGAN

In 2029 the battered and bruised Logan is making a living as a limo driver and taking care of aging and ill dr. Charles Xavier. He comes in contact with a young girl who seems to resemble himself more than he'd like to believe and is then forced to protect her against an evil corporation who is responsible for the near extinction of all mutants.

Hugh Jackman once again absolutely shines in the lead, maybe now more than ever, but even so he is outshined by the brilliance of Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles. Who also stated that it was this movie that re-ignited his passion of acting and is the reason he wanted to return as Jean-Luc Picard once again.
Dafne Keen as the young Laura also does a remarkable job.

The undertone of the movie is quite melacholic and nothing like The X Men trilogy. Same goes for the R-rating. In fact this movie is quite brutal, unsuitably so even, for a superhero movie. Also the frequent use of the f-word is quite uncharacteristic for a superhero movie and seems bit out of place.

The action here is quite bit smaller and less flashy than what you'd expect from a movie like this...actually that goes with almost everything here. The best moments in the movie are some of the more humorous interactions between Logan and Charles as well as some action sequences where the old Wolverine shows his claws just bit more brutally than ever before.

This is a mixed bag, there are some really great elements that unfortunately get overshadowed by the uncharacteristic elements. Also this is probably the first Marvel movie that does not follow the post credit teaser of the previous installment which also was a huge letdown.

That all being said in it's finest moments this was a good swansong for two of the most iconic characters of The X Men universe. But even so you do end up missing the original vision of Bryan Singer of what the X Men were and honestly the mighty Wolverine and the most powerful mutant who ever was would have both deserved a better finale.

A burglar falls for an heiress as she dies in his arms. When he learns that he has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out to save her.  I found it uninteresting.  KDC's girlfiend would probably love it.  5/10

A drama based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac, a Nebraska cop who served as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and outed the U.N. for covering up a sex trafficking scandal.  A powerful well done story. 8/10

One of my favorites, a lovely little coming-of-age film from Francois Truffaut. Very warm, full of life, if not answers. But then, life's not always forthcoming with answers, is it?

Ah yes, Christmas movies... I love Joyeux Noel, about the 1914 Christmas Truce. It wasn't all up and down the front lines, but it happened in enough places to become part of history.

Been getting very mixed reviews. Some say it's great other's think it's rehashing the old and is overlong with very confusing time jumping and that the cgi looks really poor on the actor faces...

I am bit scared about this actually...will get it one day but I won't pay full price for it that's becoming evident.
