Now this is just as gritty and hyper realistic as it was when it was originally released. Clint Eastwood shines in one of his most memorable roles. 9/10

The Personal History of David Copperfield is an adaptation of the Charles Dickins classic by Armando Iannucci (best known for director/writer/creator of The Death of Stalin, Veep, The Thick Of It among much more), and is a racially blind retelling of the story, indeed 4 or 5 of the main cast are black including Dev Patel as the titular David Copperfield. There is a fine supporting cast including Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Paul Whitehouse and Ben Whishaw. The story tells the life from birth to adulthood of Copperfield, reflecting the wealth and poverty of the era and the people he meets. I don't know if the original book was a tragi-comedy in the way this film is, but it is a very funny film but with liberal elememts of the tragic. Great performances all round. 8/10

Gee, now I wonder if they will make The Personal History of Nelson Mandela with all white people.

To be fair Mandela was a real person not a fictional character, and there were blacks in Britain in the 1840s but maybe not as many as suggested in this film. More pertinent is something like James Bond, who very well could be black after Daniel Craigs last outing.

Well techincally he couldn't as he white in the books. But ofcourse nowadays original source material means nothing.

It has been a long time since I have read Dickens, but if memory serves I believe the PH of DC was somewhat of an autobiographical work, and Dickens was white.

Yes, you're right the original character is white. The point I was making is he is a fictional character (even if there is a bit of Dickens in it) so he doesn't have to be white if the colour doesn't matter to the story.

A pair of teenage lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out to find them.  A quirky and amusing story.  8/10

The story of the love affair between FDR and his distant cousin Margaret "Daisy" Suckley, centered around the weekend in 1939 when the King and Queen of the United Kingdom visited upstate New York.  Great performance by Murray. 8/10

I own it.  Even though it is not an Amicus or Hammer film, I have it because of Lee and Cushing.  It is a decent flim (7/10).  This is the cover of mine.
