This docudrama draws parallels between the dramatic fracturing of the nation over Abraham Lincoln's presidency and the presidency of Donald Trump.  Pretty interesting. 7.5/10

There seems to be a fair amount of material coming out with that theme. I'm working through "Field of Blood", a book about violence in Congress in the years leading up to the Civil War.

Congressmen pulling knives and guns on each other on the debate floor was more and more frequent as the factions solidified and became less likely to work out compromises.

It was a different era.  I believe dueling was still legal at that time.

Not legal, actually. But the law itself was not always enforced, even when fatalities resulted from duels.

At the start of the period, Southern Congressmen were more likely to bully, threaten force, and challenge to duels. Northerners were expected by their constituents to abstain from violence. But as national press developed with the telegraph, Northern attitudes changed and they would vote for "fighting" Congressmen that wouldn't back down to Southern bullying.

Brooks' caning of Sumner played a huge role in hardening the Northern attitude, even to the point of many Northerners being in favor of the South seceding, just so that their legislators would no longer vex the nation.

In late-19th-century Russian high society, St. Petersburg aristocrat Anna Karenina enters into a life-changing affair with the dashing Count Alexei Vronsky.  Some parts drag a bit. 6/10

Saw it over 40 years ago.  Don't remember being all that thrilled by it.  I would have to view it again to give a fair assessment.

I went ans saw Avengers: Endgame again, I still think it is a great film, I still think that at 3:01 minute there are some scenes in the middle act where it feels a bit "rushed".

I'm going to place it 5th on my list of MCU films:

1 Avengers Assemble
2 Thor: Ragnarok
3 Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 1
4 Avengers: Infinity War
5 Avengers: Endgame
6 Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2
7 Captain America: Winter Soldier
8 Dr Strange
9 Iron Man
10 Captain America: The First Avenger
11 Captain Marvel
12 Ant-Man and the Wasp
13 Avengers: Age of Ultron
14 Black Panther
15 Captain America: Civil War
16 Ant Man
17 Thor
18 Spider-man: Homecoming
19 Thor: The Dark World
20 Iron Man 2
21 Iron Man 3
22 The Incredible Hulk

In Biblical times, a confusing story of a girl who disguises her Jewish origins when the Persian king comes looking for a new bride among his subjects. 5/10

I had heard that it was a classic. I must disagree as the story and the acting has not aged well. Also the story is substandard
and disjointed. Basically a disapointment all around.

A punch movie. One of the best movies of the last 10 years.

While trying to rest my aching back this afternoon, I watched this 1954 film about a security agent who investigates sabotage and murder at a secret underground laboratory, home of two experimental robots.  One of the most interesting things was seeing so many bit-part actors from other movies and TV shows in the film.  5/10

I watch Mortal Engines on rental this evening (avoiding The Eurovision Song Contest... you would have thought other channels would put something interesting on against it!). This SF / Fantasy -- brought to you by the makers of The Lord of the Rings -- was one of the biggest flops of last year... I really enjoyed it!

The theme is Steam Punk meets Star Wars in a post apocalyptic Earth where in order to survive the cities of the world have been raised up on wheels and roll around the country side looking for smaller communities to catch and harvest their resources. London is one such city led by Valentine (Hugo Weaving) who has bigger plans for the city than just about surviving, and it doesn't bode well for other big communities. Out to thwart him are a girl from his past and an outcast historian from the Natural History Museum.

I don't get why this flopped so hard, it looks great and while the story is a little simplistic it has some nice twists and turns (the character of Shrike actually makes the undead sympathetic!) and the CGI is as good as you would expect from a Peter Jackson produced film. It might have flopped for a couple of reasons... 1) Hugo Weaving is the only A lister in the cast (ok maybe an A-), 2) if the city was New York it might have jelled more with the yanks, 3) I think it was touted as a "Young Adult" film which is now cinema poison these days, long gone are the days when a film for the YA audience could pull in $6-800m worldwide (ie Twilight/Hunger Games).

Anyway I really enjoyed it, a shame  there won't be any sequels. 8.5/10

Soylent Green: IT'S PEEEEEEOOOOOPLLLLLE!!!

I watched it a few times, never worked for me in the way that the Harry Harrison stories did.

Mortal Engines: OK, with that one the entire premise fell flat for me. Cities need more resources so... put them on wheels! Er, um... or maybe just do like the British did and send out armies far and wide to enslave colonize "civilize" the world.

^^^

If you're gonna start questioning the premise of SF and Fantasy stories, you're undermining the plots of every SF/Fantasy film ever made...!!! :o :P
