I own this film as part of a Stanley Kubrick package shown below.  He may be my favorite director.

@Thel:  After watching this movie in HD, you would never guess it was made in 1968!  It is #24 on my Top 50 list.

I have not watched it yet but I can believe it as when I watched the Last Starfighter it looked like it was made this year!!!

I have the 4 Stanley film favorites DVD, I saw Eyes Wide Shut, didn't get the mask on the pillowcase part, was his wife at the party or did the elite send it as a message that they can get to him and his family anytime as a warning?
It was a message.
What kind of message? That his wife was at the party, she seemed the deviant type.
Elite sent it as a message that they can get to him and his family anytime as a warning.

I always took it as his wife was at the party and put it there for him to see it, she fucked that guys head up putting all that affair bullshit in Bill’s head  that’s some women for you, if that was me I would’ve joined the elite and then sicked them after her, after I’d thrown her whore ass out and made her fend for herself, that skanky bitch, pissed me off.

I get angry just thinking about it.

I've seen two films and a rental in the last few days:

First off was Alita: Battle Angel. Based on the manga series, James Cameron has had this film in the works for over 15 years. Although Cameron didn't direct it (he's concentrating on Avatar 2, 3, and 4) he did write and prouce it. The story is set some hundreds of years in the future and the Earth has suffered an apocalypse and society is somewhat in decline. Christoph Waltz plays a bio-mechanic who repairs cyborgs, and one day while searching a dump for parts he comes across the head and chest of a long deactivated female cyborg. He takes her home, combines her with the body he had created for his now dead crippled dughter to use, and names her Alita. But she has hidden powers and during the course of the film she develops them while fighting badies. Anyway, the film is quite good, it looks great, the performances are all good too. I feel the film is probably a little niche to be a big success, it may well have to rely on the far east markets to make back its $200m budget. 8/10

Then I saw The Kid Who Would Be King, based on the Arthurian myths but set in modern day London with kids... while the film is better than I thought it was going to be, it did feel a bit shoddily put together, and while the kids do their best they're not that convincing. It does have Patrick Stewart and Rebecca Ferguson in it so that's a couple of things in it favour. 5/10

And then tonight we saw The Darkest Minds on rental. I know we're not the target audience (young adults!), but it is a poor entry in the "YA distopian future" genre. Basically, 98% of children have died from some infection, and the 2% that are left have developed strange powers. Adults don't understand the powers so lock the children in internment camps. Ruby escapes and with some new friends wanders around the country looking for others of their kind. It's quite a boring film, the action scenes are not that great, and frankly the plot makes little sense. 4/10

I just watched Escape Plan II on rental... it's not a great film. The premise is that a team of security experts (lead by Sylvester Stallone) test prisons to ensure their security is adequate. In this film the experts are captured and find themselves in a hi-tech prison and use their skills to first survive and then escape.

I was hoping it would be as good as the first one but reviews weren't in its favour. What I would say is it isn't anything like as bad as some critics would have you think. It's not great but it passed the time on a grey Sunday afternoon when there was nothing on TV. It is #97 on the worst 100 films on IMDb, and I have seen a lot worse that are not on that list. 5/10

Started to watch Empire Records, but only made it in to about 20 minutes before the wife and I were bored with it. I know it's a cult classic but IMO it just was bad.  1/10

So then we watched Silver Linings Playbook. What a great film. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper were excellent. Love their interaction with each other and Robert De Niro again shows why he is the best actor ever. 8/10

Eight years after the disappearance of a 5 year old girl, some disturbing incidents seem to indicate that she's still alive. The police and parents try to unravel the mystery of her disappearance.  The film is presented in flashbacks that jump around which, to me, made the film less enjoyable.  6/10

Saw Corner Gas The Movie on Amazon. A little slow to start, but gets its stride and is tons of fun if you're a fan of the series.

A female undergrad is assigned to tutor a male student in American Lit.  Each meeting takes place at a park bench.  They slowly come to like each other more and more.  Too predictable. 4.5/10

EDGE OF TOMORROW

Tom Cruise stars as a cowardly Public affairs Major who gets thrown in the thick of battle against an overpowering alien enemy and gets killed only to find himself waking up and forced to live the last day of his life over...again...and again...and again..Bit by bit he learns how to fight and gets to know the people he is fighting with especially a lady soldier Rita who once had the exact same experience.

The premise for the movie is great although it ofcourse has been done before most notably in Groundhog Day, but this time we also have very cool aliens and lots of action.

Cast here is a bit of a mixed bag but the always fantastic Bill Paxton pretty much steals the show and this again showed just how brilliant of a man we lost when we lost Bill few years ago. Emily Blunt as Rita was not such a great choice...she does not bring out the tough soldier chick very plausibly...Also Tom Cruise is his usual self which is a hit and miss at best.

The real problem however is caused by the pg13 rating...this is supposed to be a hopeless war movie after all and the battle scenes should depict that, but they don't. And the over the top speedy editing doesn't help. You can barely see the alien creatures and ofcourse there is virtually no blood. This movie should have been a strong R...but that's where Tom Cruise comes in again as he always demands a pg rating.

Had there been better leads and more gore this would have been a killer movie, but now it is just falls tad bit short on...well all the things that count. I feel bit bad about Bill though...this was one of his last big movie roles, he would have deserved better.

This had a lot of lost potential...which is a real shame.

One star for the creatures and story one and a half star for Bill!
