^^Yeah there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in Sword & Sorcery movies these days. Far cry from the 80's when there seemed to be an abundance them.

Begs the question. What is your favourite Sword & Sorcery movies?

For me it's hard to go past the three Lord Of The Rings movies with The Return Of The King being my favourite of the three. I still haven't seen The Hobbit movies.

Outside of LOTR, growing up as a kid in the 80's, Conan The Barbarian was my absolute favourite. I also loved Highlander, Excalibur and DragonSlayer. Havent watched some of them in years though so not sure how they hold up today...I'd imagine not very well.

^^^

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, just a variation of Dungeons and Dragons.

Thanks, maybe they will come out with that movie, too.  :))

I hope not, there seems to be insufficient interest in "sword & sorcery" films outside of Tolkien and GoT. And given the budgets needed to do the CGI properly no one will make any money. Even Warcraft had to rely on the far east gamers market to barely break even (I really enjoyed it though!).

EDIT: Ah, Crap! I just looked it up on IMDb... there are two sequels (Wrath of the Dragon God 2005 and Book of Vile Darkness 2012) as well as another Dungeons and Dragons films scheduled to come out in 2021!!!

I don't know why they keep making them, if they're barely making any money and they are as bad as Thel said D&D was.

I love Conan The Barbarian and I have always thought a lot of Excalibur.

Thanks for answering Thel. Doesn't look like Sword & Sorcery movies are very popular around here. A couple of good choices from you there though.

Sorry, Jack, never was much of a fan of those type of stories.  I did see Excalibur and enjoyed it somewhat.  Probably because it wasn't too over the top with the fantasy stuff.  It was a bit too long, though.

Sorry Jack, I've been a bit busy today and wanted to give this some thought before replying.

Personally, I agree with you that the best (by some way) is the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Return of the King is the best of those. While inferior The Hobbit Trilogy was fine but really should have just been two films, the new stuff to pad it out to three films was unnecessary and didn't add anything.

Beyond those I have to look to the Ray Harryhausen Clash of the Titans and particularly Jason and the Argonauts. I liked Conan when I saw it maybe 25 years ago. I saw one of our film channels was showing it tonight but then I realised it's the 2011 remake... so a pass from me.

There's been some good S&S films with significant "horror" elements in recent years such as Season of the Witch with Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman and Solomon Kane with James Purefoy.

My fave S&S movies:

The Princess Bride, even though it's pretty much all swords... sorcery happens when they need to get over a plot obstacle, but they do it with such class.

Cyrano de Bergerac: Oops, no sorcery at all in this one. Still, great swords and loads of swashing and buckling.

The Thief of Baghdad: This one's a 1940s classic, a wonderful gem of a movie that totally got ripped off by Disney's Aladdin. Swords *and* sorcery in this one, so it's good.

Love Sword and Sorcery movies as well .
Conan is and will stay the number One for me. As a teenager when I saw it , I'll never forget this movie and its fantastic score.
I enjoyed a lot Highlander , the '86 very first movie.  But except all the Scotlands scenes, I think it has not aged very well.
Of course , Lord of the Rings is an untouchable trilogy forever. The Hobbit is great too but not in the same league.
Excalibur : A friend gave me the VHS tape as a gift. I still have it . A pure Masterpiece by John Boorman with an ultra-classy acting, dominated among others by Helen Mirren, one of my big first thrills as a young man !
And obviously the latest mega tv show Game of Thrones. Unavoidable.

Without a sorcery side but a strong sword demonstration : Braveheart .

Predictable and slow starting, it still kept me entertained. The second half was the better part of the movie. 6.5/10

In order to get out of debt, two brothers fake a disappearance in the Alaskan wilderness so they'll have a great survival story to sell. But the hoax turns out to be more real than they planned. 6.5/10

Inferior to both the original and the first remake, I still found myself carried along for the fantastical and illogical ride.
I like most of the actors that took part so that helped it score some points with me. 7.5/10
