^^^ Tom Cruise is actually pretty good most of the time... he's just an idiot in real life!! :)

As an alien invasion film it was great... it just wasn't War of the Worlds... IMHO!

When he doesn't over act he is decent enough...but sadly 9 out 10 times he does over act so...

I always thought this was basically pretty loyal to the original War Of The Worlds concept....the tripods, the aliens, the red rain... Sure the Spielberg touch was quite evident in the whole broken family thing but to me it wasn't that big of a deal.

^^^ Nah! It's not 9 out of 10! I had a quick look at his filmography since War of the Worlds came out in 2005. There are not that many poor performances. Yes Knight and Day is awful, Rock of Ages was awful before Cruise turned up and there's a couple I haven't seen (American Made and Lions for Lambs), but the rest are all pretty good performances with The Mummy perhaps being borderline.

As for War of the Worlds, yes it is loosely based on the book... very loosely! But as I said it is a pretty good film, but if I wanted to watch a film base on the HG Wells book, I would have preferred it to be more faithful regarding, locations, period and characters, but that is just me! ;)

Fair enough buddy!
But I still don't like Tom Cruise...never have really...I always just think that he tries to over compensate his shortness... :D

THE PREDATOR

Shane Black returns with his take on THE greatest space creature of all time.

Black has always had a great knack for action and humor and in that regard this movie does not disappoint. He also expands the mythology quite well and still staying true to what the Predator has always been about.
However here he might have over done it a bit with the humor, I always enjoyed the darker tone of the previous movies, although there always was humor present it wasn't quite this prominent. That being said Thomas Jane's character Baxley was an absolute hoot...as was the always lovely Olivia Munn...she in fact outshined the star Boyd Holbrook in almost every scene. Predator's 1 and 2 both had a strong very prominent leads in Arnold and Danny Glover but Holbrook just doesn't quite do it...he is better however than Adrian Brody was in Predators.

The action here was as said top notch though. And brutal enough too...and the new hybrid Predator was rather awesome.

I was perhaps expecting something bit more from Shane Black truth be told....also it would have been nice to have Arnold renew his role as Dutch as he was suppose to in a short cameo...but I also do understand why Arnie was against the idea...he should have had the lead...or atleast a co-lead then.

Had Shane toned down the humor a bit and added some more oppressing moments it would have made the movie much better.

But all in all anything with The Predator in it will always get two thumbs up from me and all the little nods to the earlier movies was much appreciated especially Jake Busey as the son of Gary Busey's character from Predator 2...now that was a nice touch...his role should have been bigger too though.
Extremely entertaining movie there is no doubt about that...I just think it could have been even better...I should have been even better.

We watched Green Book yesterday and it is quite good. A Viggo Mortensen (Tony Lip) and Mahershala Ali (Dr Don Shirley) road trip movie where Tony drives the acclaimed pianist Dr Shirley on a tour of the southern states of the US during the height of the racial tensions in 1962. The boorish Tony is at first reluctant as he has a somewhat racist attitude himself, but the club he bounces at is closed for refurbishment for two months and he needs the money. The educated Dr Shirley is somewhat pompous and stand off-ish, but over the course of the tour they grow to like each other and help each other through the encounters. Tony does his best to protect the pianist from the worst of the racism and in quieter moments the Dr helps Tony write better letters home to his wife.

The racist angle of the film is not covered in much depth but the performances from the two leads are more than worthy of their Oscar noms which Mahershala Ali is favourite to win. Based on a true story. 7.5/10

A man starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences.  Although it was a well acted and finely directed film, I found myself a bit bored with it.  5/10

Pictured is the Grindhouse release Special Edition commemorating Peter Cushing's 100th Birthday.  This is the version I purchased.  It included the uncensored version on both dvd and Blu-ray.  The digital restoration looks marvelous.  There are plenty of bonus features as well, including interviews with the stars, a gallery of stills, and trailers of other gory type films of the time.
As for the movie itself, Cushing's fiancé, a beautiful model played by Sue Lloyd, has an accident in which the cheek of her face gets scared.  Cushing, a surgeon himself, figures a way to heal the scares using the epidermis gland of a recently deceased young woman.  However, the fix only lasts a week and must be done again and again.  I'm sure you can guess the rest.  The story is fair, and there are a few bloody scenes that not everyone would be able to watch without turning away.  These were never before shown in the US without editing.  Cushing gives an excellent performance, as always.  I am happy to add this film to my collection. 7/10

I saw How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World today. The final animated film in the trilogy based on the Cressida Cowell books. In this adventure the people of Burke and their pet dragons are threatened by a new army of dragon hunters, so their leader - Hiccup - leads his people to a new land where they might be safe... all the time hoping to find the fabled Hidden World. Along the way Toothless meets another dragon of his kind - a white female - and inevitable the hormones take over!

I enjoyed the previous two films in the series and this is pretty much more of the same. The animation is great (almost Disney / Pixar quality), the characters and the story are as good as ever. The slightest of gripes is that the villain is a it generic and you never get the sense of any real threat. 9/10

I saw Breezy on rental a day or two back. It was a film I had seen on TV many years ago (maybe back in the 80s!), but I only recently realised it was directed by Clint Eastwood in 1973. It revolves around the emerging relationship between a middle aged divorcee (William Holden) and a 19 year old hippie played by Kay Lenz.

The film is pretty much as I remembered it but it isn't really anything to get excited about. There is some nudity in it, but my memory must have failed me because I could have sworn there was full frontal nudity, but sadly there is only some boob and bum... :(  6/10

A drama centered on the efforts of John and Aileen Crowley to find a researcher who might have a cure for their two children's rare genetic disorder.  Based on real events.  Well done. 7.5/10

This was a pretty good addition to the Ocean series of films. Besides it has the beautiful Sandra Bullock in it - always had a crush on her since seeing her in Demolition Man. The rest of the cast is solid and though a bit ridiculous the story moves at a good pace and kept me interested. 8/10

God bless 80s !! broadcasted this last week on a the TNT channel, I couldn't resist. Off put all the obvious clichés, this film is a must.
During the game of beach volley, the 4 players all muscle out and covered with sweat fall into the sand several times ... and get up without a grain stuck on the skin but all with the immaculate Ray Bans! fantastic !
Wow, just Wow !! I did some research about Kelly Mac Gillis after seeing the movie. What a shock ! her physical appearance has changed enormously, to say the least . She has declared publicly to be lesbian for several years. A dream has miserably collapsed  :-X

Yeah unfortunately for them the majority of women in Hollywood are washed up by age 45. They're making a sequel to Top Gun btw, scheduled for release in 2020. I think only Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer from the original cast will be in it.
