Somehow a comment I typed for this thread vanished. I'm also not a fan of Godfather's plodding parts at the start. 30 minutes for a stoopid wedding? Fuggeddaboudit.

You have completely missed the point of the wedding scene, and some others on here may have as well.

Francis Ford Coppola uses the wedding reception as a means to introduce all the major, as well as, some of the minor characters, to the viewer.  This not only includes the Godfather's personal family, but also his business family plus some of his other associates, and even the baker who provided the wedding cake.  All of which will appear in key roles throughout the film.

In addition, by using the true fact that no Sicilian can refuse a request on the day of his daughter's wedding, the viewer is informed of the substantial amount of power and influence this Godfather possesses.  This is why the wedding reception is the very first scene in the movie.

Now I admit that there is a huge amount of information in this scene that must be absorbed to truly comprehend the film.  Plus, this task would be even more difficult for those who are unfamiliar with the structure and operation of a crime family.  But I encourage anyone who did not understand this scene to re-watch it, paying close attention to every detail shown and every word spoken.  The wedding reception scene has little to do with a wedding, and is presented in a masterful way by director Coppola.

^ OK, that helps in getting the wedding scene. But then it's a question of how much information does a viewer need to have in order to understand part of a movie? If it's too much outside knowledge, one has to ask if there's a better, more direct way of conveying the information? 30 minutes of subtle detail, as you've seen, goes right over the heads of folks not prepared to absorb it all.

Great to see you back Typhon!

I CAN understand what you are saying there buddy but it still doesn't change the fact that the scene (like most of the movie) just drags on waaaay too much.

In truth I think that The Godfather is more of an Art-film than actual piece of entertainment. I've never been a fan of artsy movies...but if one is that is more than okay by me. :)

Thus the need for a re-watch.   :smug:

Artsy, smartsy.  You're one of those movie fans who has gotten too use to the quick action shoot-them-ups with a little fantasy nonsense thrown in.  This, over time, can lower your standards, which makes a realistic film that actually tells a story less bearable.  Time to step back to reality, buddy.   :)

Hahah! You might be right. But a movie can be realistic without being boring though. :)

To Typhon's point, some of the best films can be ones that are very simply done.

The Russian film "How I Ended This Summer", for example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_I_Ended_This_Summer

Three people in the cast: the permanent keeper of the research station, the student, and the voice on the other end of the radio. The plot and conflicts are straightforward, but the complications that arise are both realistic and very involving. It's a gripping human drama, one I was glad to have picked up on.

We watched The Croods: A new Age this week. The sequel to the 2013 original, this reunites the voice cast of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stine, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener and the late Cloris Leachman. New to this episode are Leslie Mann and Peter Dinklage.

The family seek for a paradise that they've heard about. When they find the homestead of another family they think they have found it but the father eats the forbidden fruit with unforseen consquences.

As a family animation it's pretty good, not Pixar good (but what is?). It's colourful and has an engaging story although at times when a lot of action takes place all at once it's not so easy to work out what's going on! 7/10

Must have been family animation week... I watched Surf's Up last night. I love animated documentaries as a result of that film.

I really enjoyed this one offered in replay on a tv channel.
I prefer not to dwell on the interventions of his family notably those of his wife and again the useless comments of his children, especially Kelly and Post Malone as well.
We are not talking about music here, this is Ozzy 's edited biography from childhood. We are getting a bit closer to God Bless Ozzy released 9 years ago.
I would like to watch this documentary with people who don't know anything about the guy. It must be worth something because Ozzy's claims are worth their gold. He distributes the punchline with each statement. I laughed a lot as I watched him:
Sharon: "you haven't stopped cheating on me since we got married"
Ozzy: "what do you want? These are the risks of the job" he gets up from the sofa and leaves !!
Question asked to Sharon: "How long did he last without drinking after his rehab ?"
Answer: "45 mn !!"
in the end, you really wonder how he is still alive.

Just an excellent action/horror movie. Vastly superior to all the sequels and crossovers that followed, this testosterone fest is a must see. You could only do this kind of movie in the 80s and dammit I miss these violent and gritty style of films. 8.5/10

Yesterday we went to see Stillwater. Starring Matt Damon, Abigail Breslin and, as it's set largely in France a large number of French actors I've never heard off including Camille Cottin who has been in stuff I've watched!

Loosely based on the Amanda Knox case (I mean very loosely if my understanding of the story is acurate), the father (Damon) visits his daughter (Breslin) in Jail in Marseille where she is serving time for murder. During the visit she presents some circumstantial evidence which the authorities are not prepared to pursue, so the father takes it apon himself to investigate. He strikes up a friendship with a single mother (Cottin) who is able to interpret for him.

The film is quite slow, but is well acted, but some aspects don't ring true and come across as plot holes IMO. It's not bad but I don't need to see this film again. 6/10

Not often do I sit down anymore to watch a movie, and I cannot remember anything made prior to 1985 that I haven't seen that I want to see. So when this got shoved at me for study purposes, I didn't have high hopes. Made in 1967, Marketa Lazarová is one hell of a great movie.
