Saturday Night Sci-Fi

A former United Nations employee races against time to stop a zombie pandemic.  Kind of makes today's so-called pandemic look like a joke. 7.5/10

^^^ as I posted earlier in this thread I just found that this "zombie" movie falls apart about half way through and I just could not wait for it to end. Just my opinion though and my rating was a point below yours as I did really like the first half.

We recently watched the Alec Guinness spy comedy/drama, "Our Man in Havana".

I read later that it was based on an actual German spy in Portugal, who made money by selling faked information to his masters. Graham Greene took that incident and set it in Havana, with the liar now working with MI6 instead of Abwehr. Guinness and Noel Coward do fantastically well as the recruit and the spymaster, with Guinness' ability to convey tipsiness ever so well truly making his character portrayal stand out. He's not a lush, like so many actors immediately go to when their character drinks. He's tipsy, and plays it very very well.

The story itself has numerous twists, both comic and serious, and makes for a great little adventure.

I agree that the ending was too predictable.

Watched Fire Saga on Netflix last night.

It's a funny little 2 hours of Will Ferrell sending a love letter to Eurovision. If you like Will Ferrell, you'll have some fun with it, but keep in mind it's pretty laid back and deadpan on the comedy. Spinal Tap it ain't.

Spaceship Earth on Hulu

Documentary about Biosphere 2, really interesting stuff. I've got a new view of that experiment after seeing this. Biosphere 2 was more of a successful adventure than a failed science experiment.

Saturday Night Sci-Fi

In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.  Although the film started out very promising, I slowly lost interest throughout.  By the end, I cared little as to what would happen.  Not sure why. 4/10

DIRTY HARRY

San Francisco Inspector Harry Callahan faces a very dangerous foe in the form of a psychopathic sniper killer who is blackmailing the city for ransom or he'll keep killing people. Harry goes on a mission to stop him but it turns out to be not so easy when the killer kidnaps young girl and he is forced to use questionable tactics to get the location for the dying girl, only to later find out she was already dead. Things turn on their head when the killer victimizes himself and later takes a whole busload of children hostage. Harry has no choice but to face the killer alone.

One of the biggest classics in the crime movie genre and something of an originator to the tough guy cops.

Clint Eastwood absolutely shines in the lead role as does Andy Robinson as the psychotic killer.

Don Siegel's direction is absolutely flawless in his magnificent camera angles and making the beautiful city of San Francisco more than just the back drop for the action.
Lalo Schifrin's understated music is the icing on the near perfect cake.

There is a reason why Dirty Harry is one of the greatest chracters in whole of movie history and why it solidified Clint Eastwood as a true superstar and actor with near unmatchable charisma.

Seen in theater when it was released. Great movie. The long version is also worth seeing. With Abyss, Cameron succeeded in developing special effects on liquid matter (the tentacle of polymerized seawater) He will develop it in Terminator 2 Judgment Day 2 years later to create the T 1000.
Special mention to Michael Biehn , totally hallucinated.

What an incredible movie - set the template for action movies for years to come. Clint is one of my favorite actors but here he is greatly effective in delivery of a tough and multifaceted character.

Knives Out - My wife's Poirot kick led to us watching this highly-rated whodunnit from last year.  Overall, I had great fun with all the twists in it and none of the actors goes to waste. Very fun ensemble cast. Not a lot of character development: the focus is on solving the mystery, which is what one expects in a good mystery potboiler.

Saturday Night Sci-Fi

A man living in a futuristic colony begins to question his existence when his friend is chosen to go to the Island, the last uncontaminated place on earth.  I liked it even more than the first time I saw it.  Scarlett Johansson never looked better. 8/10

Reminded me of A Quiet place by John Krasinski, and The Happening by M. Night Shyamalan, without the intensity of the first and the directorial talent of the second but still a pleasant film to watch.

We all watched Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Something about "Be excellent to each other... and party on, dudes!" makes it timeless fun.
