^^^ I really enjoyed Pacific Rim and I would easily recommend  the sequel as it is almost as good. Incredible CGI in both films.

Watched Radioactive on Amazon, a biopic of Marie Curie. Very strong portrayal of the scientist, but the film gets disjointed and lost in parts.

As much as I had found it so long and boring when I first saw it in theater, I have to say this fan-edited version is incredibly successful.
Special mention to the fantastic soundtrack of Brian Eno, both bewitching and inviting to travel through prophetic hallucinations.
A must see .

I went to the cinema today for the first time since mid-March to see the new Christopher Nolan film Tenet.

Of Nolan's previous films I would most closely compare Tenet to Inception, they are films which test the ability of the audience to understand mind-bending concepts, in the case of Tenet it deals with time warping. It's a complex story which gets very little exposition, so the viewer must work out much of what is going on themselves! Suffice to say it deals with secret agents, gun dealers and a plot from the future to destroy the world!

It stars John David Washington (Blackkklansman), Rpobert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson with a cameo from Michael Caine (looking quite frail now).

It's an enjoyable romp, even if it's not always obvious what's going on! 8/10

Saturday Night Sci-Fi

In the twenty-fifth century, a time when people have designations instead of names, a man, THX 1138, rebels against his rigidly controlled society.  First time seeing this 1970 film.  A bit slow at times, but may have been more effective back then. 6/10

It is a bit slow, I think that was a 70s thing. I've seen both the original and the 21st Century remaster of the film - with Lucas' obligatory boosted SFX. Thankfully, those only affect the chase scenes and not the movie proper.

One thing that struck me about the dystopia in the film is that there are so many holes in it. It's not totalitarianism as much as it's authoritarian until it hits cost overruns, then it's anarchy once you're past that point.

Watched 3 metal doco’s on Amazon Prime today.

First one was “Death by Metal” about the death metal legend Chuck Schuldiner(who passed away in 2001) and his pioneering band “Death” Was a really good watch. Chuck was an intelligent musician but a very wound up and complex individual. Learnt quite a bit about him I didn’t previously know.

2nd one was “As The Palaces Burn” Starts out as Lamb Of God tour documentary but turns into something completely different when the band goes to Prague for a show and the singer Randy Blythe is arrested and taken in custody the moment he steps of the plane and subsequently charged with manslaughter and put in jail for an incident at a LOG show in that city 2 years prior when he allegedly pushed a stage crasher off the stage who later died from a brain injury unbeknownst to the band at the time.

3rd one was “Born in the Basement” A doco on original Jersey thrashers Overkill‘s formative years done by original drummer and founding member Rat Skates who after slaving away for years on tour and not having enough money in his pocket to ring home when he was touring through Europe in 1987 decided to give the music life away to live a more structured and ethical work life. He’s now a successful writer/filmmaker. Another good doco that works as an early history lesson on Overkill but is a bit letdown from the lack of involvement from other band members and major players.

I think that I am going to get an Amzon Prime membership again so I can see the ones about Death and Overkill. I do not care for LOG, as I find them seriously lacking.
Thanks for mentioning them, I have really wanted to see the Death by Metal one.

Cool! You’ll really enjoy those, especially “Death by Metal” if you’re a Death fan.

I’m not into LOG either but there’s not a lot of their music you have to endure in the doco. Was an interesting watch for sure though.

Saturday Night Sci-Fi

A group of friends venture deep into the streets of New York on a rescue mission during a rampaging monster attack.  The entire film is shot by one of the friends who was recording a party.  The perspective is interesting, but the herky jerkyness that is a result of this technique can be a bit annoying.  Cool looking monster, though. 7/10
