Title: What Black Sabbath did you listen to today?
Post by: Typhon on May 18, 2018, 08:50:49 PM: Just thought I would start what I feel is an important thread to have in The Community. :)

Well I have not listened to any Black Sabbath music for nearly 4 months now. I do this once in a while in order to build up a level of anticipation and excitement, knowing full well my ears will be rewarded some day. Tonight the wait is over.

The only way I'm able to is I left it on while doing house work.

I suspect that I like MOR a lot lore than most in The Community. I believe it stack's up fine against any of the Great 8. :rockon:

I found it pretty odd there was no mention of "Symptom Of The Universe." Arguably one of the top 10 songs in their entire catalog. :doh:

That is odd, and Symptom Of The Universe is iconic enough to be the title of the compilation I posted right above the post I am quoting.

The bass does the main riff while i just pump A and G on the guitar (we've transposed it from E to A). I think it could be great.

Yes I know that, they were leftover tracks that they put on one CD available only at the concert, that's what I meant by extra tracks, they didn't record them purposely to make an EP, they were leftover tracks that didn't make it on the album 13.

I always thought Pariah sounded bit too much like an Ozzy solo tune...bit too poppy for Sabbath...which I guess does mean it could have been a hit single had they chosen it...certainly a better choice for a single than the god awful God Is Dead....

Charger the only tune I think sounds like Ozzy solo is Isolated Man, still a good song but not as Sabbathy.

Well this was something that was talked about a lot at the other place as well...

And it all comes down to rights for those recordings. If something was recorded for lets say a radio broadcast the rights to that recording belong to the radio station...the band can't just take up and use it. And some of those radio stations don't even exist anymore so the rights would be totally up in the air.
Another thing ofcourse is that the masters for those recording might have been long gone already and all that would even remain are some bootleg copies which ofcourse could not be used for an official release.

The one recording however that we do know Sanctuary has and obtained rights to is the Asbury Park show as 3 songs from that were released on Past Lives...so that could have (should have) been released...

This leads me to think of an interesting topic perhaps worth exploring...worst (or more accurately I suppose LEAST FAVOURITE) Sabbath song. I don't think we've yet covered that...might be interesting to do one for each era of Sabbath...something like top 3 perhaps?

Well in all honesty I think we all know I do have severe mental problems...

But yeah a song that has a boring intro that lasts longer that half of the length of the song (which is over 9(!!!!) minutes tobegin with) is pretty epical failure in my book...and ofcourse then when the song actually does start what does it start with...a rip-off riff!! Had they cut that intro into just the first verse and then headed straight into the Hole In the Sky riff part the song would have lasted about 5 minutes and could have been a good one...but as such...it's just a big turd.

Hadn't even realised the structural similarities between Wheels and God Is Dead...Not a big fan of Wheels either honestly (nothing really wrong with the song itself but it is such a horrible choice for an opener it gets skipped almost every time I play the album) so it hadn't hit me...but yeah you are right...so there's another reason to dislike God Is Dead...another self plagiarism case.

I've talked about this before...Wheels would have fitted so much better as a closer. Tomorrow's Dream should have been the opener and the album would flow much better. Now the song gets wasted because a slow almost soft song is no way to start an album. Again there's nothing really wrong with the song itself (although it is bit on the overlong side) but it was probably about as bad of a choice for an opener as it could get. And as such I always start the album with Tomorrow's Dream and then I quite often just forget to play it afterwards. That song would have made a whole different impact on me had it not been the opener I am sure.

Phew. :) Well at least that is a little more understandable. For a while there, the way you were talking, I thought you was in the middle of some kind of drunken binge. Although I still don't get how you would call Wheels an "almost soft song". It has plenty of punch to it. Plus, I know you have this need to have an opener that is fast-paced. But Tomorrow's Dream is hardly that.
Anyhow, Wheels has always been in my top 5 best. Therefore, I felt the need to defend it. :rockon:

I don't have "drunken binges" anymore! :D :D

Well compared to most big Sabbath numbers up to that point Wheels is quite a bit softer.

Tomorrow's Dream is a nice faster rocky track in my book...they opened shows quite a bit with that in the early 70s as well and it worked brilliantly in that as well.

My feeling on Iommi's playing on the track is that, well... he's Tony Iommi. He's going to play what he plays because he is who he is.

This is not a bad track at all and holds its own ground quite easily. I put it in the middle of Sabbath's output, where there are plenty of good songs to keep it company.

It has never been one of my favorites, and the last time I listened to it, actually listened to it, was probably when the record came out. I remained unimpressed after my listen today, but that is by the scale I use to measure Black Sabbath music. It's a pretty high bar.

Listening to that song did accomplish one thing: I now have a Sabbath jones going on that I'll deal with over the weekend. I foresee a complete, chronological catalog sauree starting on Saturday morning and running in fits and spurts until I finish The End.

Oh, and for as much as Turn Up the Night doesn't do anything for me, it still rocks!

I agree, yes songs like The Shining, Ancient Warrior, Glory Ride, the Ray Gillen sessions of the same album are even better.

Honestly, the last two tracks are wonders of music. Every time I listen to them, I feel emotionally cleansed and comfortable with myself. They are magical.

I must say that I truly love 13 but I do not consider it on par with the original 8. To me the original Sabbath albums are untouchable, but like I said I truly love 13 as well.

Never been a big fan of Seventh Star but I am partial to the Martin years of Sabbath. Make no mistake though, I still consider the Ozzy and Dio eras as leaps and bounds above all Sabbath that came after them.

Wow! Only just seen this. What an amazing rare Sabbath vinyl to own. I have no idea it’s worth as there’s never been one sold on Discogs but it would be at least anywhere between $2000 & $4000 though. There’s currently US test pressing of Paranoid on discogs right now listed at $4000 USD.

Congrats! What’s the story behind obtaining it?

I bought it for $20 at a record show about 30 years ago, if I recall correctly. Nothing special about the acquisition. I had no clue those things for Sabbath were going for the kind of money you mentioned, damn lol!

I have to admit I haven't played The End a whole lot but went through it again a while back as I was putting my Sabbath in my in car collection and I have to say this song is rather brilliant!
The riff from Tony is bloody great...and Ozzy actually tries to channel his inner Dio a bit with the vocal melody which is pretty rare occation with him.

I'd actually say this song is better than anything on 13. Why it was ever left out is beyond me...

This is a disc I made which reflects how I would have arranged Black Sabbath's final release. The track list is as follows:
01 - Season Of The Dead
02 - Peace Of Mind
03 - Take Me Home
04 - Isolated Man
05 - Methademic
06 - Pariah
07 - Naïveté In Black
08 - Cry All Night
You may notice I used the 4 new tracks from The End along with the 4 tracks from disc 2 of 13. The final track has the rain/thunder/bell effect at its end. The band's catalog started with this, and should end with it. For the cover, I used a snapshot of my driveway that leads to my home.

I always liked the album cover for Live at Last, it seemed so out of sorts from the rest of their entire catalog that is stood out. Two different remasters. The latest one being the Deluxe Edition from 2011 which has the best sound...so far!

Since the master recordings were actually found couple of years ago Tony is in the process of remixing it and it most likely will be released next year! That's something to look foward to!
