Saturday Night Sci-Fi

This movie explores how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future.  I understand what the film was trying to show, but it is like watching 4 movies all at the same time, which didn't really work for me.  The cast plays multiple roles, and their versatility is impressive, especially Hanks. 6/10

We watched Bernie over the weekend, a great piece about a murder in a Texas town, and how the DA had to have the venue moved because the killer was so well liked, he felt he'd be unable to get a conviction. Based on a true story, excellent character work from Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey, and Shirley MacLaine

I watched The New Mutants earlier on rental. A film which encountered development hell as a result of Fox/Disney takeover. Filmed a few years ago (2017 I think, and slated for release in 2018), it was then pushed back by Disney who wanted reshoots, then in late 2019 the reshoots were cancelled because the young adult cast had aged too much to allow them to happen. Anyway it finally got a cinema release last summer in the midst of the pandemic.

This X-Men spin-off stars a number of established young actors including Charlie Heaton, Anya Taylor Joy and Maisie Williams... with the sole adult being Alice Braga. The story centres around a secure hospital where the five young mutants are being tested to identify, understand or develop their mutant powers, under the watch of a doctor (Braga). The film was supposed to be more horror than comic book, but it really isn't scary enough which I believe was to be resolved by the reshoots.

After the development issues, lack of reshoots and constant schedule shifts it didn't bode well for the film. However it was much better than I expected, the acting is good, the atmosphere is a little creepy and some of the CGI is damn good for the size of the budget. A good story which has a bunch of mystery thrown in there for good measure. Yes it could have been scarier but not a bad film by any means. 7.5/10

A total shipwreck. Wanting to be Ridley Scott isn't that easy. Alien is a masterpiece because fear is and built on level after level: first the spatial context aboard the Nostromo, the successful presentation of the crew making each member interesting, including Ash, the cat, the ship himself and the eighth passenger in the end. Everyone knows the movie.
Here, we borrow the Alien context but in the context of Cameron's Abyss with full start of Gravity. Many scenes are rip-offs of these three classics. Serious error because too visible. So no empathy, we don't see anything, the acting is worse than bad, Kristen Stewart first. The movie stinks of feminist and lesbian codes currently in force. Very irritating. In addition, the director dares to botch the myth of Cthulhu. A sacrilege sequance sold as a bad Godzilla, one more.
To forget very quickly for those who have seen it, to flee for others.

I don't mean to butt in, but the moviemaking industry has slowed down to almost a standstill over the last year because of the pandemic.

Saturday Night Sci-Fi

Not my favorite type of movie, but is definitely better than the remake I watched a couple of weeks ago.  Although, the remake had more attractive women.  ;)  7.5/10

... Which doesn't mean that everything that came out is bad, quality being one thing and quality another. KDC made me discover a multitude of very good movies that I didn't know. Hence my question.

I haven't seen a whole load of films since the lockdown forced cinemas to close in March. When they did re-open in the late summer there wasn't much to see and I was still wary about going to places with crowds (even socially distanced)... and then they closed again!

At the beginning of last year I did see some good films -- 1917, JoJo Rabbit, Emma and the Pixar film Onward. I did see Tenet in the cinema in August and while it is solid it's not one of Nolan's best (but if you like Inception you might like this one too).

Many films due out last year have either been rescheduled or went to streaming, some I have access to and some I don't. I saw the recent Pixar release of Soul the other week (solid but I prefer Onward), but that's about it. I have seen New Mutants on rental recently and I have the latest Bill and Ted's on the rental list along with Wonder Woman 1984 and The Croods 2.

Of the less mainstream films which have had some buzz I'm looking forward to seeing The Father, Mank, The Sound of Metal and Nomadland when they become available.

The only good movie from last year (that I've seen) was Bloodshot. But if you don't like superhero movies (even ones with a humorous twist) this isn't for you.

Tenet got some mixed reactions so I haven't seen it yet so can't speak of that.

Last Friday was the Texas classic "Greater Tuna". Seen it so many times, I have it practically memorized. "Tuna Christmas" should be this coming Friday. We're watching with an old friend and Texas native who's never seen them, but had heard about them.

Not so bad after all. The weakness of the movie seems to come from this story of extraterrestrial cosmic force which harms the film until the end while the evolution of the relationship of jean with his tenfold powers and the impact on the rest of the mutants remains interesting. I'm a fan of Jessica Chastain but here she misses her character, very completely transparent.
...But one detail, unless I'm mistaken, doesn't respect the logic of the franchise: Raven/Mystique is still in great shape at the end of X-Men: The Last Stand... I don't understand .
Another unbearable trend of the moment: Why want to turn everything into a teen movie ? Devastating effect guaranteed. The worst ? Kurt Wagner is slaughtered by this forgettable and ridiculous actor. Alan Cumming was so perfect in the 2003 movie.
