Saturday Night Sci-Fi

A team of top scientists work feverishly in a secret, state-of-the-art laboratory to discover what has killed the citizens of a small town and learn how this deadly contagion can be stopped.  I had never seen this movie, so this seemed like the most appropriate time to watch it. 8/10

Good classic.

But I actually prefer the miniseries remake from 2008. It updated the story quite well and the cast was good too.

Иди и смотри (Come and See)

A Soviet made film about partisan fighters in Belarus during World War II. It primarily follows a young teenage boy and uses camera jingo-jango to tell the story of the partisan fighter's struggle to cope, understand, survive, and repulse the Nazi's who were wholesale slaughtering everyone and everything.

It is a war movie. But unlike any war movie I have ever seen.

Though the accouterments of war are necessary to the story, it's more about what real hatred looks like and that not everyone is down with that shit. I was left disturbed, which was a good thing.

It is straight up fucking hard core.

Some critics consider it the best war movie made. I would agree.

The director used live ammo whenever possible (like when those tracer shots go across the field) and shot each scene in order. The boy that was the center of the movie's action has no makeup on - the way he looks at the end of the movie is because of what the filming schedule and living conditions there did to him.  It's harrowing to watch.

Saturday Night Sci-Fi

All obvious jokes aside, this film does make an effort plot wise.  A wealthy woman is sick of her philandering husband messing around.  But then she has an encounter with an alien spacecraft which really makes things crazy.  The fx are awful, the acting is weak.  Best thing about this film is its length, only 65 minutes. 2.5/10

Young Ender Wiggin is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, an insectoid alien race who had previously tried to invade Earth and had inflicted heavy losses on humankind.  Fairly entertaining, although easily forgettable. 6/10

^^^

It's one of those occasions where the book is so much better than the film. Not terrible, with a great cast, but it just couldn't match the scope and vision of Orson Scott Cards original.

Watched Annihilation with Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh

Same premise as the Soviet Union film Stalker, with significant nods to HP Lovecraft, but the gunfire and monsters added in were unnecessary. The shoot-em-ups detracted from the mood of the film and made it yet another humans vs Martians kind of movie.

A veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.  Interesting story paired with great fx's makes this film quite entertaining. 8/10
