R.I.P. Mr. Way. A name that has been associated with a lot of music I've rocked-out to for a large part of my life.

A sad passage, indeed.

I'm doing a show on Elvis today (89.3FM in Dallas, www.knon.org on the Internets) in about 45 minutes, and I will be going through his career, focusing on his #1 songs. As I prepared the setlist, it struck me just how quickly he deteriorated in the 70s.

He passed away 43 years ago this weekend, at age 42.

Yeah, Elvis went to shit with a quickness. I was still living at home then, and the day he died a neighbor lady came knocking on the door just sobbing. My mom answered it, and before my mom could say anything the neighbor blurted out "Elvis died!". People were looped when the King died on the throne.

I know I'm making light of it, but I was never much into Elvis (what made him famous was before my time), and even though he rocked his '68 Comeback Special, with a few exceptions his musical output thereafter was by the numbers and uninspired.

Drugs kill, boys and girls.

Groucho Marx died three days later, was hardly discussed, but that bothered me more than Elvis. And Mr. Marx was waaaaay before my time. Apologies to Mr. Way.

Meanwhile, in Death Valley, a possible new high temperature world record was set yesterday:

https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/death-valley-weather-us-temperature-record-furnace-creek-a9673761.html

Near a place called "Furnace Creek", no less. I find that fitting. The previous record was also at Death Valley.

^^^I drove through Death Valley from Las Vegas on the way to Yosemite in September 2013. From memory it was about 46c that day, mid/late afternoon. Nothing can prepare you for that. Couldn't last more than 10 minutes outside the car. Amazing place though.

^^I think the hottest I’ve been through in Melbourne is 44c but I spent the whole time inside with the air conditioning on. Very different heat in Death Valley. Extremely dry heat with no air. Was hard to even breath.

My wife is telling me it was actually 48c when we were in Death Valley not 46c.

So that record was 54C. OUCH. More than half-way to the boiling point for water!

Hottest I've ever had here in Texas was 113F / 45C back in 1980. That heat was memorialized in Saxon's "Midnight Rider" song about their US tour in 1980.

Rest In Peace Frankie Banali. Was part of the earliest incarnation of Ozzy’s original band post Sabbath but best known for being the long time sticksman for Quiet Riot and playing on 7 W.A.S.P. albums including the classics “The Headless Children” and “The Crimson Idol“

A brilliant drummer and dedicated rocker to the end.

Fuck Cancer!
