Interesting list however a lot of shows listed are actually NOT sitcoms but comedy shows...

The main thing is that a sitcom is filmed in front of a studio audience. Without that it's just a comedy with several sub genres..

A little British-centric but given where I come from that is only to be expected, and a number of the US sitcoms others have mentioned above I don't believe have made it to these shores!

Oh yes it was...But Monty might be bit more of a sketch type of a show though than a sitcom.

Sketch and improv comedy shows would be a separate matter... and there are a ton of great British sketch shows.

KDC mentioned Black Adder and Porridge. I like them both, but I think Black Adder is the better of the two.

For me, Big Bang Theory had its moments, but it got to the point for me where the characters just alienated me. I get Sheldon as a high-functioning person on the autism spectrum, but the way nearly everyone around him caves in to his whims is just unfunny. Kind of like how Ross eventually got me to quit watching Friends. Both those characters just drain the ever-lovin' life out of me.

Now, for a show that does a great job dealing with disabilities, I go with Speechless. I think that's a real gem of a show, even if it doesn't have enough gravity in it to be a great. Same with Malcolm in the Middle, another quality show even if it's not a true great.

Monty Python isn't sit-com. It's more akin to sketch shows like SNL and such. Live audience have nothing to do with the genre...

Cheers was a sit-com, Hale & Pace was a sketch show.

Damn, i forget that The Simpsons is actually a sit-com, which ofcourse makes it THE best sit-com ever.

The Simpsons is a cartoon.  There are cartoons that make me laugh, but I was not counting cartoons.

Yeah, The Office is a mockumentary/reality parody.

But The Simpsons IS a cartoon sit-com. It's got all the typical trademarks in terms of set-ups, misunderstandings and exaggerations set in a "real life" environment. But it works alot better in cartoon form, imo.

Well there are far worse things to argue about!

But The Simpsons is NOT filmed in front of a studio audience nor does it feature a laugh track so it is NOT a sitcom....also most of it does not take place in a one or two sets but events occur in a several locations...where as sitcoms (because of the limitations of being filmed in front of a live audience) take place mostly in just one single set...i.e. someone's house or a bar or a place of work. That and live audience are what make a sitcom rather than a comedy.

Well that's my definition of it anyways and I'm sticking to it!
