Only 44% of Seattle-area residences have AC, but it's been included in all newer construction. Still, for the 56% that don't have central heating and cooling, my heart goes out. There's very real risk of heat-related injury and death in conditions like that.

Thanks guys for the concern. It supposed to start cooling off later today, but they are still predicting mid 30s C in the early afternoon.
It is 745 and the temp is 18 C so a bit cooler already compared to yesterday.

In heat waves here, we have overnight lows in the low-mid 80s when we have highs over 110, due to the humidity. Having cooler waters nearby can help a great deal with dropping those overnight lows and giving the AC units all a breather so they don't have to run hard all day and all night.

The weather in my small town has been ridiculous the past few weeks. First we had a storm that knocked out our power for two days and blew half my fence away. We were lucky, other folks had trees through there roofs/sides of houses/cars blown away...120mph straight line winds. The following day my wife had to be rushed to the hospital, and spent five days there.

So it was me, the cat, and our dogs. Had to throw out all of our refrigerated food. Wife got better, cat died, then we had 10 inches of rain in about five hours. Flooded the whole town. We never get water in our basement...this time we had about an inch. Got that cleaned up, but still have soggy boxes and stuff to throw out. Ordered a dumpster but none to be had...because everyone else got the same thing. Again, we were lucky, a lot of folks had two-five feet of water in their houses. And it's been nothing but hot and humid.

About a week prior to all of this nonsense, I got a shot in my knee for a torn meniscus. It did exactly zero for it. So I've been hobbling around like a geezer.

Relatedly, there was an F4 tornado in the southern Moravia area of the Czech Republic the other day. Got an email from my Czech teacher telling me about it. She thought the news was a joke at first, she had never heard of a tornado there before. Wiped out three villages. They don't have a warning system in place, because it is so rare. I looked into it and they have had about 290 tornadoes since 1190 AD when they started keeping track. That's rare!

Despite my seeming bitchfest in this message, we're doing fine. Still raining, should be drying out some in a couple of days. Music helps. Loud, pissed off music.

Worst thing about joints like that is how long they take to heal. I'm still nursing the elbow sprain I got in February.

Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands have had the sort of rain you only hear about in the Bible. Many deaths and much property damage, more rain on the way.

We had heavy rain on Monday -- not that bad mind you -- but I think it is the same weather system.

Some real terrifying stories coming out of the Rhine Valley regions - one from Netherlands where a dike was breached and people in the area were told to close all doors and windows and retreat to the highest floor: the flood was on its way, no time to evacuate.

Looks like Sicilly have recorded Europe's highest ever temperature 48.8C. There's a heatwave all along the south of Europe

Meanwhile in the UK it's average temps, overcast with the odd bit of drizzle! Weekend looks better.

Normal August here in Texas. Temps brushing 100F, not really going over that so far. I'll gladly accept that situation!

Hurricane Henri will be moving through my section of the country late tonight and all day Sunday.  Initially it was going to be a direct hit on my area, but now its track has moved west a bit and will move right through Connecticut (the state where Bogblast lives).  We will still be getting constant winds at 40 to 45 mph with gusts around 60 mph.  Plus a couple of inches of rain.

I have taken the necessary precautions:  filled my gas can in case I have to use my generator, enough food to last a few days time, and even took down the flag off my flagpole.  I'm more concerned with this type of event than a virus.  There is no vaccine for major storms.  You can only prepare for it, and then wait and see.
