The new DP album is called Turning to Crime and it is... shock! horror! a covers album! It's due out November 26th

Track Listing is:

1) 7 And 7 Is
2) Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu
3) Oh Well
4) Jenny Take A Ride!
5) Watching The River Flow
6) Let The Good Times Roll
7) Dixie Chicken
8 ) Shapes Of Things
9) The Battle Of New Orleans
10) Lucifer
11) White Room

A couple of songs I don't recognise but on the whole it's not a bad selection!

Yes the cover album was a bit of a curve ball...

And especially the selection of tracks most of which I have never even heard of...songs nor the artists... Love? Huey Paino Smith?? Little Feat???? Mitch Ryder?????? Lonnie Donegan and Johnny Hurton??????? Never heard any of them!!

Very very odd choices...but I'm assuming they are from pre-Purple era so it would kind of make sense for them to do covers of them...especially if they were inspirations in the olden days.

But honestly I don't really know what to make of this...

Yes I think everything is from 1970 or earlier.

It reminds me of the Rush covers album (Feedback) which was deliberately stuff which inspired them as youths, indeed they share a couple of tracks with the DP song listing (7 & 7 Is, and Shape of Things). I'm looking forward to their version of Oh Well, an early Fleetwood Mac song from before the yanks ruined them ;)

It would have been nice if they'd had a Who track or even late 60s or early 70s Rolling Stones track.

Huey Piano Smith is a GENIUS, made some of the best New Orleans rock and roll in the early days. Mitch Ryder was a Detroit artist that reworked a Motown number, "Devil with a Blue Dress" to be a major hit for himself. Lonnie Donegan is a skiffle musician, very fun. Little Feat are a US band that did quite a lot of the fun rock and roll. I'm stoked for these covers, they're a fun basket of tunes.

Not sure who they think would be interested in this. Most of those songs are before a lot of their fans time. Maybe they just had too much time on their hands and wanted to record but had nothing written so went down the covers/tribute route. Strange thing to do at this stage of their career.

Who knows, they might heavy these songs up somewhat and make them their own and actually turn out being better than anything else they’ve put out themselves in recent years.

I'm liking both the DP version of "7 and 7 Is" and Love's original. Makes me all the more excited for their doing the other covers. They'll be playing songs that they love, so there will be a lot of passion in them.

And all the songs except for the medley at the end ought to be under 5 minutes. :)

Video for 7 And 7 Is:

Without knowing a damn thing about the original I gotta say this sure as heck sounds very much like Deep Purple and I'm liking it.

Cool drumming from Ian and nice production. The keys suck though.

I don’t mind a guitar keyboard solo duel or back & forth especially the way Blackmore & Lord did it but I’ve never really liked keyboards overpowering the overdriven guitars in the main driving parts of songs. I like them subtle like Dio and Rainbow used, synth intros are fine too but when the drums kick in and the song gets going, it’s time for the keyboards to take a back seat unless theirs a solo in there.

I agree it's a question of arrangements - not every mixdown is going to be to everyone's liking. I'm fine with the mix on the track, but what Jack is asking for is on the original version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6An7KGK6U3c

That one has 2 guitars, with the one playing the part used for the keyboards in the DP version taking very much a back seat to the Morse part guitar.

It's a song from 1966, widely considered as a major influence for both Jimi Hendrix as well as punk rock. DP's version takes it in a progressive direction. I really enjoy both versions of the song, as I hear them working on different levels. The 1966 original from Love is very close to stuff done by The Who. While Morse and Airey can play direct and hard, they're clearly more comfortable on the progressive side of things, and that shows here.

I do think it will likely be my favourite track on the album. One of my favourite Fleetwood Mac songs and this isn't a bad version of it.
