^^^ Definitely

Nothing special yet not entirely a waste of time as there is some interesting dialogue. I can see why the King was derided for his acting, yet I still would argue that he does a decent job as the lead here. 6.5/10

When a poker player hits rock bottom, he enlists his best friend to pull off a high-stakes heist.  Decent movie for a limited budget film. 7.5/10

Four men who were involved in the investigation of a German millionaire at the end of World War II are found murdered with tiny dolls left next to their corpses.  Nice little suspense piece from Amicus Studios. 6.5/10

This was sort of up and down, sometimes engaging and other times a bit slow. I did like it though  and I hope that there is another Bourne movie in the future. 8/10

Anyone seen Once Upon A Time In Hollywood yet?

Ok, I've now seen te new Tarantino film. I'm not sure it is his best film (I need to let it settle, and maybe see it again) but it is a pretty good film. I think I can say straight away that it is better than some of his films like Jackie Brown, The Hateful 8 and probably Kill Bill 1 & 2, but I'll reserve judgment on how much further it goes up the list (I've not seen the Grindhouse film or Reservoir Dogs).

It's not as violent as some of his films (but there is some graphic violence), and the film feels more mainstream than normal. Brad, Leo and Margot are really good here although Margot doesn't say much in her scenes. For a 2¾ hour film it does fly bye even though it's a slow film for the most part... a lot of talking scenes of course.

8/10 for the moment but I might adjust that when I've let it sink in or seen it again.

A college professor travels to New York City to attend a conference and finds a young couple living in his apartment.  Good performances. 8/10

FIRST BLOOD

A troubled Vietnam veteran walks into a small town only to be captured by a cruel Sheriff and his violent abusing deputies triggering old survival insticts and forcing him to fight a one man war against them.

Sylvester Stallone portrays the pain and suffering of a man who has seen and been through unimaginable horrors of war, which never really leaves brilliantly and convincingly.
Brian Dennehy is suberb as Sheriff Teasle who by his own cruel actions creates a situation he cannot control.

First Blood deals with PTSD and unnecessary police brutality before neither were "in" so to speak. There are few movies that have been more current no matter how the times change than this. Showing that soldiers coming back from war aren't always the shiny heroes they can be made out to be.

John J. Rambo embodies the scarring war leaves behind, not just on the body but on the soul as well. And there is a reason why he has become such an icon in movie history and why this served such a perfect start to a series that created and molded one of the biggest figures in action history.

Yesterday we saw Angel Has Fallen, the third in the "... Fallen" franchise after Olympus and London. The only returning actors from the previous two are Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman who is now the President. This time there is an attempt on the president's life and while it doesn't succeed it leaves the POTUS in a coma and Butler's character as the prime suspect. He must then go on the run and try to clear his name.

I didn't really have high hopes for this, Olympus has Fallen was soild but was blown away by the similarly themed White House Down, and London Has Fallen was just plain awful with some of the worst CGI you will ever see. But while some of the critics haven't been kind on this third installment, there's one critic I trust (Mark Kermode) who usually pans films by Gerard Butler when he's in action hero mode. Anyway Kermode reviewed the film by saying it was by far the best of the trilogy and he really enjoyed it.

So we went along and saw it and while it won't win Oscars or awards for realistic portrayal of a secret agents life, it is a really fun film. Nick Nolte -- as Butler's estranged father living 'off grid' -- steals the scenes he's in, and Danny Huston as an ex-colleague in the security business looking for government contracts, is good too. The only slight draw backs are that some of the effects are a little cheap and in one or two places realism is stretched too far. 7.5/10

I haven't seen any of those **** Fallen movies. Not a fan of Gerald Butler, but that last one has gotten pretty decent reviews here too.

This was better than I expected, and was well done if a bit of a budget film. 7/10

The 2nd  of Hammer's Quatermass trilogy.  In this one, Professor Quatermass, trying to gather support for his Lunar colonization project, is intrigued by mysterious objects that have been showing up at his facility. 7/10

The girlfiend saw the end of Ruth & Alex on TV the other week and thought she'd like to see the whole film, so I rented it. The drama, with Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman as the titular leads, are looking to move apartment in New York with the help of a pushy agent (Cynthia Nixon).

The girlfiend agreed with me that the whole thing was one of the most tedious films we've ever endured. Not even Morgan Freeman could save this yawn fest. The best thing about it is the 88 minute length! 2/10
