I had never seen any of the Friday the 13th films.  A friend of mine brought the first one over last night and said it was the only one worth watching.  He was wrong.  :squint:  2/10

 I must admit to liking the first four films, but well done cinema they are not  :whistling: and the only reason I like them is all down to nostalgia. I watched them as a kid and thought they were OK at the time. There are certainly better Horror movies than this series. I actually thought that the TV series of the same name that aired in the 80s was far better.

I gotta say out the 80s horror boom movies I like the 13th movies the least. I prefer both Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street more.

A slacker is forced to work for his father-in-law after his pregnant wife steps away from her high-paying job.  Mildly amusing. 6/10

Just over a month until The Irishman comes out. Is getting a very limited release in cinemas on Nov 1 but they are just a few small independent cinemas which are 45 minutes or more from where I live. Otherwise it's Netflix from Nov 27. Early reviews have been full of praise. Talking masterpiece and Oscars type praise.

A German submarine is boarded by disguised American submariners trying to capture their Enigma cipher machine.  A fine story to honor the brave submarine personal from WW2. 7.5/10

Saw Yesterday last night.

Interesting premise, "what if everyone forgot the Beatles?", but uninspired execution. There was too much comedy around the edges without the film actually being properly funny. The main character was far too earnest for that, which is a shame, as if they'd gone for laughs, they could have had them. It was like watching a 4-episode Britcom all at once. With Beatles tunes.

I think Richard Curtis had better writing when he did The Vicar of Dibley, and that about sums up where I place the film. It's in that unremarkable middle, the kind of movie that comes up on cable or something and we all go, "yeah, why not leave it on while we fold laundry."

LONE RANGER

John Reid returns home to Texas after few years only to be put in odds with a dangerous outlaw Butch Cavendish who escapes custody and who then kills his brother and all the Texas Rangers in the region. He wows to capture him and gets help from an indian named Tonto who has his own reasons to hunt Cavendish. Soon they realise there is something bigger behind all which includes a rich silver mine and the railway company.

Director Gore Verbinski (Pirates Of The Caribbean) unites once again with producer mastermind Jerry Bruckheimer and actor genius Johnny Depp to bring a new life to the classic story.

Depp who plays Tonto naturally steals the show once again with a stellar preformance but Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger does a hell of a job too not to mention the always brilliant William Fitchner who absolutely shines as Butch Cavendish. Also worth mentioning are Tom Wilkinson as the railway executive Latham Cole and Helena Bonham Carter in a small but captivating role. Ruth Wilson on the other hand is (as usual) rather bland and uninteresting...her role should have gone to a more capable actress.

The story is great and the action is top notch and the humor is just enough but not over the top. The story plays well with indian myths and good old fashioned white man greed and desire for justice and/or vengeance.

I have to say I do not understand the poor reception this movie got from most critics, but then again critics have proven time and time again they really don't know a good movie even if it punched them straight in the face.

It is hard to believe the movie has a running time of over 2 and a half hours as time just flew by. A very entertaining flick for sure. Just what you'd expect from the people who brought Pirates Of The Caribbean to life.

We saw The Hustle on rental earlier. Not the recent film with Jennifer Lopes (that was Hustlers), and not the Paul Newman film from 1961 (that was The Hustler), no this is the "comedy" from earlier this year which is a remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels but with a sex change... as in it stars Ann Hathaway and Rebel Wilson instead of Steve Martin and Michael Caine.

I can take or leave Rebel Wilson (i.e. in the rigt film she's fine... this is not the right film!), but I like Anne Hathaway... and frankly I thought she was better than this old tosh. It's not funny and the plot is ridiculous. The whole thing looks like an excuse for the cast and crew to have a holiday somewhere in the Mediterranean.

The best thing about this is that Hathaway looks particularly hot and sexy! 3/10

Possibly the worst movie I have seen in 25 years.  No plot, little to no audible dialogue, and no action to speak of.  Simply a guy spending his time checking out parties and clubs, and then going home or walking on the beach.  I guess Christian Bale will do anything for a paycheck.  In the extras, they say that writer/director Terrence Malick wanted to do the film his way.  Well, his way, is the shit way.

The film finishes with 7 minutes of credits.  :o  Don't know why.  You could make the movie with 3 people besides the cast.  One guy to hold the camera, one guy to add the background music, and one guy to edit out the unwanted material.    Wait, I stand corrected, just 2 guys.  All the material is unwanted.  The only reason I am not giving a rating of zero, is because all the women are attractive.  The one thing good about this piece of garbage.  1/10

LIFE

A group of astronauts on board the International Space Station get a sample from Mars which contains a lifeform. It starts as an interesting science project watching the creature grow and learn but it then becomes hostile and in the end it becomes a battle for survival for both the Martian and the astronauts on board.

The cast is strong here with Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhall, Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada, Olga Dihovichnaya and Ariyon Bakare all preforming well. However the very first death is bit unexpected and frankly unwelcomed. But it does set the tone for the movie that no one is safe.

The martian (friendly named by a bunch of school kids as Calvin!!!) is quite different from all other murderous aliens seen on the big screen. It isn't exactly vicious looking or scary but more of an angry looking piece of coral, which is a bit of a let down, but at the same time quite unexpected.

There isn't much gore unfortunately and part of the frequent use of the f-word there is very little to justify the R-rating. In fact this could have easily been PG13 which is a real shame as there was much potential here. However the suspense held up to the very end, which was great although maybe bit forseeable during the last few minutes and both the visuals and the set decoration were very good.

Over all this could be considered something of a softer distant cousin of the first Alien movie, but honestly it had more promise than it managed to deliver.

Watched the 1949 classic, All the King's Men. Broderick Crawford's acting is great in this portrayal of a populist politician that goes off the rails once he attains power. It's a great story, regardless of what may be going on in current events.

England 1959. In a small East Anglian town, Florence Green decides, against polite but ruthless local opposition, to open a bookshop.  Good depiction of the existence of ignorance in society. 7.5/10
