Horrors of the Black Museum (1959)

In London, the police have a Black Museum in which they keep various weapons and devices that were confiscated from murderers they have apprehended.  When they begin investigating a new string of murders, a writer of murder mysteries (Michael Gough) reports on how the investigation is struggling to stop the crimes.  It turns out the writer has his own Black Museum.

Good story with a decent amount of mystery.  7/10

Vampira (1974)

In order to revive his long hibernating bride, Vampira (Teresa Graves), Count Dracula (David Niven) takes blood samples from several beautiful models, but during the transfusion, Vampira's race turns from white to black.

Nice mix of horror with a little comedy mixed in.  The beautiful women added to my enjoyment.  8/10

Halloween horror goes on:

EVENT HORIZON

A crew of a small rescue vessel is sent to Neptune where a large deep space exploration ship with ground breaking technology has just reappeared after being missing for 7 years. Their job is to retrieve the ship and find out if there are any survivors and what happened to the Event Horizon. Once they arrive they soon discover that something truly terrible happened on the ship and that it isn't over yet.

The cast is mighty, Sam Neill as Doctor Weir, Lawrence Fishburne as Captain Miller and Jason Isaacs, Joely Richardson, Richard T Jones, Sam Pertwee, Jack Noseworthy and Kathleen Quinlan as the crew. Neill in particular does an amazing job as Weir who slowly decends into madness.

Paul WS Anderson did a great job capturing the horror and atmosphere on the ship. Even the effects don't look too out dated yet and were done mainly with using models not CGI.

This was overlooked when it came out mainly because of poor promotion, but it soon found new life and love in the home video market and has since become a cult classic.

I have seen this movie countless times and it still brings chills and shivers down my spine. One of THE GREATEST Sci-Fi horror movies ever made, an absolute masterpiece!

Sad Fact:
The original cut of the movie was over 2 hours long but the studio deemed it waaaaay too violent and disturbing forcing Anderson do a quick re-edit down to just 96 minutes. And you can see it in the movie, there are times when events seem bit rushed. Anderson since has stated that he cut atleast 10 minutes too much in a hurry to get the film ready for release.
Sadly the original master copy has been lost and only a poor quality VHS of it remains. It will never be released.

^^^^^^
I remember liking that story too.  What bothered me was some foolish things, like half of the crew smoking cigarettes.

------------------------

Daughter of Darkness (1948)

In Ballyconnen, a beautiful but disturbed young woman (Siobhán McKenna) works for the local priest.  When the carnival comes to town, she encounters a handsome young boxer (Maxwell Reed) and scratches his face open with her fingernails when he expects sexual favors from her.  She is then hurriedly packed off by the priest to Yorkshire, where she is taken in by a farming family and manages to suppress the strange feelings of fascination and repulsion that she experiences in the presence of the opposite sex.  Until, that is, the carnival comes to town and brings with it the vengeful boxer.

The film, and the actress, do a good job portraying the main character as a sweet, yet, dangerous person.  I would be afraid to even hang around this girl, let alone go on a date with her.  Yikes!  7/10

Homicidal (1961)

A woman checks into a hotel and offers the bellboy $2000 to temporarily marry her.  This unusual act is the beginning of many odd behaviors by the woman.  Is she mentally disturbed, or does she have a plan in mind?

A good mystery that kept me guessing.  7/10

Let Me In (2010)

From Hammer studios, a bullied young boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) befriends a young female vampire (Chloë Grace Moretz) who lives in secrecy with her guardian (Richard Jenkins).  Naturally, the young vamp girl needs a constant supply of human blood to survive.  But it is her guardian who ventures out to retrieve it.

A great gruesome story with a modern day setting.  The two lead actors do a terrific job.  9/10

Black Sabbath (1963)

Finally watched this film which contains 3 separate stories.

1) A female nurse is called to take care of the body of a recently deceased old woman.  While doing so she steals the old woman's ring.  This act comes back to haunt her, big time.  7/10

2) An attractive woman is terrorized by repeated phone calls from a man she believes is suppose to be dead.  She calls her friend, another attractive woman, to come and stay with her.  A man eventually breaks in and kills her friend, but she then kills the man.  However, the calls keep coming.  5/10

3) The head of a family (Boris Karloff) kills a criminal who had been terrorizing his village, but in dong so he is now a vampire who can only seek the blood of his own family members.  3/10

Averaging the 3 stories out I get a 5/10 overall.  Rather disappointing for a movie with such a great title.

If you didn't see the 3rd story, then you didn't miss a thing.

The Tingler (1959)

A pathologist (Vincent Price) experiments with a deaf-mute woman who is unable to scream to prove that humans die of fright due to an organism he names The Tingler that lives within each person on the spinal cord and is suppressed only when people scream when scared.

Unusual story line, but I did enjoy it.  8/10

Vampyres (1974)

A pair of bisexual female vampires prey on passing motorists, whom they seduce and murder in the English countryside.

Had never heard of this film and it turned out to be the perfect movie to watch on Halloween night.  Gruesome blood thirsty scenes, sexy women, takes place in large gothic mansion.  9/10

Fun Fact:  The mansion is the same one which appears in the Amicus movie "And Now The Screaming Starts."

Halloween special final part

TALES FROM THE CRYPT

5 individuals get lost during a tour of an old crypt only to get trapped in and face a mysterious man who shows them all the way they'll die.

5 different stories five different leads. Never been a huge fan of these episodic movies but this one was pretty well made.

Ofcourse the name already gives it away. This is based on the 50s and 60 comic books The Tales From The Crypt, and all 5 stories are straight out the comics. And this also is the fore runner of the classic late 80s horror show Tales From The Crypt that was based on the same comics.

Three actors rise to the top here, Sir Ralph Richardson, Joan Collins and Peter Cushing. Sadly Cushing's role is pretty minor and bit different from what you'd expect.

Not all that much horror in this but the stories were fun and each had a different and couple even a rather surprising ending as does the whole movie.

A rather enjoyable small budget film from the legendary Amicus Productions.

Fun Fact:
Director / Producer Robert Zemeckis' favourite halloween horror movie, and was a big reason why he got involved with the TV-series of the same name. He even directed the second episode of the series that was based on the first story of the movie.
