This will be a multi review post.

THE CONJURING

The Perron family moves into a new home but strange unexplained events begin to occur. It soon becomes evident that there is a presense in the house that is not human. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren are called in to help and they discover very dark secrets about the past and finally find out what kind of a threat the family is actually facing.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga star as the real life (YES this movie is inspired by TRUE events) paranormal investigator couple Ed and Lorraine Warren and both do amazing jobs.
Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston, Shanley Casswell, Hayley McFarland, Joey King, Mackenzie Foy and Kyla Deaver as the Perron family also do great jobs.

The atmosphere in the movie is great and it is truly scary which is something one can't say about most horror films. And it's not about quick scares induced by fast edits but it's a building tension. And the fact that it is based on actual events (although heavily dramatized obviously) makes it even scarier.

One of the best horror films of the 21st century.

Last night I finally watched The Conjuring. WOW! Scared the crap out of me. Was watching it on my phone and I must say I dropped my phone 3 times from being scared. Great movie! 9.5/10

Yes, The Conjuring is a good one.  If on the phone scared you that much, then imagine a good sized television.  :)

@KDC: Go see it. I watch VERY few movies, being the cinema snob I actually am. This movie is worth the time - I've decided my concerns were conjured up due to the gen z environment of the movie. Which makes sense, given it is about young people, written by a young guy, etc.

@Charger: Speaking of conjuring HAHA. Glad to see you have the determination to work through a TODO list regardless of how long it is or how much time it takes. Bravo!

THE CONJURING - LAST RITES

In the Warren's last case the past comes haunting as a family in Pennsylvania receive a possessed mirror that begins to haunt the family in terrible ways. The Warrens are at first reluctant to take part in the investigation but after their old friend mysteriously dies and their daughter gets tangled into it do they have no choice but to step in and soon they do find out that there is a deeper personal connection.

The final movie of the series starts bit differently and moves on at a much slower pace, focusing more on Judy Warren and her boyfriend than the case, but there is a reason for it and the final hour of the movie is where things start to get great again.

This isn't as scary as the first two were but the cast once again does a great job especially Mia Tomlinson as Judy...And eventhough it takes its time to get going when it does it really does.

A fine ending to a great movie series that I think can be considered a hall mark of supernatural horror.

Lost in Space (1998)

In 2058, it is likely that the earth will soon be uninhabitable.  So a mission is planned in order to find another planet that can support the human race.  Although things go as planned at takeoff, an evil stowaway (Gary Oldman) disrupts the entire mission.  The crew winds up having to use a hyper-drive that could send them to any unknown location in space.

There are only 2 good things I can say about this movie.  The special effects are very well done, and it was pleasing to see 2 actors from the original TV show make an appearance in the film.  But the story itself was too cheesy and absurd for me to enjoy.  Now I understand this is science fiction, but when things like the ship going off course to within a few miles from our Sun's surface and they don't get fried?  That nonsense I just can't accept.  Or the fighter pilot (Matt LeBlanc) ordered to fly the craft, has the hots for the Robinson's (William Hurt, Mimi Rogers) older daughter (Heather Graham).  She, of course, soundly rejects him at first.  Cheesy!

Then to cap it all off, everything in the end works out just fine for everyone.  They should change the title of this movie from "Lost in Space", to "Lost in Fantasyland".  3/10

^ I saw that when it came out. I remember being dragged to it... I also remember Gary Oldman was in it... That's about it. Oh yeah, it was in space. 28 years later, no need to revisit that stinker!

Spaceways (1953)

A rocket engineer (Howard Duff), responsible for sending a satellite into space, is accused of committing the murder of his estranged wife and her lover, and hiding their bodies on the now deployed satellite.

From Hammer Studios, this is a science fiction film with a criminal twist that made the story quite interesting.  Decent special effects for the time in which it was made.  8/10

F/X

A movie special effects master Tyler is invited to fake a murder for the Justice Department but things go horribly wrong and he must rely on his special effects skills to find out what really happened and stay alive when people are trying to kill him.

A quite a clever little action/thriller/comedy starring Bryan Brown as Tyler and the always brilliant Brian Dennehy as a tough cop trying to figure out what's going on.

Good characters and clever plot and an ending you did not see coming.

I remember watching a TV show of the same name in the mid 90s starring Cameron Daddo and Christina Cox...
