Flight Risk (2025)

Action / Thriller directed by Mel Gibson. Starring Michelle Dockery, Mark Wahlberg and Topher Grace.

An Air Marshall (Dockery) escorts a fugitive / informant (Grace) to trial. They are being transported in a light air craft piloted by Wahlberg. The majority of the film takes place in the confines of the plane.

Shortly after take-off things take a turn for the worse when it transpires that someone on the plane doesn't want everyone to survive the trip! Trust issues, double crossings and tensions transpires as we learn the nature of the informants information and who wants him not to get to the trial.

It's got clunky action, weak dialogue and predictable plot developments... I would have thought better from Gibson. While not dreadful I can't recommend it. 5/10

Blacklight (2022)

A shadowy government agent (Liam Neeson), who specializes in removing operatives whose covers have been exposed, stumbles upon a deadly conspiracy within his own ranks.

Fairly standard Liam Neeson action flick.  Not bad, but not great.  7/10

SIGNS

A former widowed reverend and his two childred and brother find mysterious crop circles on their field and soon similar signs start to emerge elsewhere on the planet as well...mysterious figures also start to appear on the farm and soon they discover something very sinister is coming that could potentially change the future of mankind.

M Night Shyamalan builds the suspense slowly but intensly and keeps the focus firmly on the family played brilliantly by Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin.

The atmosphere is just brilliant...echoing back to one of the greatest UFO movie of all time Close Encounters Of The Third Kind...Shyamalan just keeps the surroundings much smaller and trusts in the "less is more" approach which actually works brilliantly.

This can be considered M Night Shyamalan's last great movie.

^^^

It's not his last great movie, but I agree his output has been generally poor over recent years. However, if you haven't seen SPLIT from 2016 you'll realise he can still do it.

The one with James McAvoy?

Did not like it... I think out of all the post Signs movie the only one I've found even somewhat good was The Happening and even that was bit silly.

Have not seen Knock At The Cabin, The Visit or Trap though....

The Ruse (2025)

An in-home nurse is tasked with caring for an elderly woman in her remote seaside estate.  However, strange happenings, unexplained sounds and a mysterious neighbor begin to worry the nurse to the point where she fears for her life.

A good mystery with lots of suspense that kept me watching.  8/10

High Life (2018)

A father and his daughter struggle to survive in deep space where they live in isolation.

If this film intended to show how outer space can be boring, then it succeeded.  4/10

Survivor (2015)

When a U.S. Service Officer (Milla Jovovich) in London tries to investigate some suspiciously approved visas, she is framed for crimes she did not commit and forced to go on the run while being pursued by a master assassin (Pierce Brosnan).

A good mix of action and suspense.  8/10

Brilliant, laconic review! :) No more needs be said.

BLOOD WORK

An FBI Profiler gets a heart transplant after a near fatal heart attack and is living a quiet life post surgery when a woman approaches him saying he has her sisters heart and she was murdered and asks Terry McCaleb for help solving the case. Reluctantly he agrees...it soon dawns on him that he might be hunting a serial killer that he has a deep connection with.

Clint Eastwood in his final action/thriller lead. The story is based on a novel from Bosch author Michael Connelly.

This has a somewhat slow pace but what it loses in pace it more than makes up with acting. Clint bringing his A-game as the aging Profiler and Jeff Daniels as Buddy and Wanda De Jesus as the victim's sister do great jobs in their roles.

The ending is somewhat lackluster unfortunately even though the twist is well done.

A great little thriller and somewhat of a forgotten gem from Clint Eastwood's vast catalogue.  I remember being somewhat disappointed with this film when it came out, but seeing it again after 22 or so years I can't remember why anymore.

THE FOURTH KIND (Courtesy of Typhon)

A psychologist returns to the Alaskan city of Nome after the death of her husband and discovers that some of her patients have been having some strange experiences at night and that it all might be connected and that it involves her as well.

Milla Jovovich does one of her best ever preformances as Dr. Abbey Tyler as she tries to figure out what is real and what is fantasy and what is actually happening.

The movie itself is a mix of mocumentary and "dramatized" scenes. And honestly the rather strange mix actually works really really well to add the suspense and "reality" to the film. This is I suppose bit of a continuation to the genre Blair Witch Project started but this is done just 100 times better. You actually can believe in the events and it makes you feel that the mocumentary parts are actual documentaries.

The story is loosely based on real events that have taken place in Nome over the many years and people going missing and reports of Unidentified Flying Objects. You add that element to the film and it gets even more powerful.

It's not overly long and it keeps adding the pace quite nicely. But this is a very unique style of a movie and considering the subject matter (which I immensly enjoy) this one was a nice little treat and honesly being a fan of Milla and the genre I find it quite shocking I had not heard about this little movie before!
