Pretty good album. Better than their debut and Stampede. Chad Gray would've made a great replacement for Phil had the Abbott brothers chose to go down that path.

Today was the gospel blues of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Some of the best lead guitar playing this side of heaven!

 I have the debut and I really like it but I have yet to hear any of the other albums. I do have the complete Mudvayne discography though.

I've got the same thing (part from the fact that I've never even heard of Mudwayne... ;D )...

I really enjoyed the first Hellyeah album it had a good honest rock 'n roll attitude...but I remember hearing the first single from the second album and it didn't resonate at all in the same way plus it felt like the singer had actually gotten worse. So I never really got into the band anymore after that. I think I should probably give the guys another chance.

^^Its not the most original sounding album but it's more consistent and much catchier and groovier than their previous ones. I also prefer Chad Gray's vocals on it over their other albums.  Less of that southern twang and more of the Anselmo esque screaming from Vulgar/Far Beyond

Great album.

Apparently this album had a few riffs & ideas lifted from riff tape that was discovered in a box discovered by Criss Oliva's widow, and you can tell. It's probably the most original era Savatage sounding album post Criss's death.

That is a fantastic album indeed!

And yeah Jon found some tapes of Criss' riffs back then...he also used them for Global Warning and The Festival and the last few ones were used on Jon's solo album Raise The Curtain.

JOP was a fantastic band. It was a real shame that Matt died, he was not only a fantastic guitar player but such a close friend to Jon as well...I guess he never really recovered from that enough to put the band together again.

Yeah Matt LaPorte was an incredible guitar player. Being from Tampa I'm sure he was influenced/inspired by Criss too.

Jon has been through so much shit in his life its amazing he still has the will. Brilliant singer/musician

Yeah always loved that Jerry & Matt version of Ghost In The Ruins....they really rip through that one! Absolutely stellar playing.

Jon has been through so much...and ofcourse loss of Paul O'Neill was a huge hit again as well considering just how close they were and how much Paul helped Jon (and vice versa) after Criss died.

I haven't heard anything from Jon in a long time... Chris Caffery did tell me a while ago that Jon is infact working on some new music on what might be a new JOP record...but who knows.

Today I have only been taking in EXODUS for the first time in my life.

Bonded By Blood which is pretty good and Fabulous Disaster which I am now finding rather excellent even!

It is strange how certain bands just kind of slip through the cracks... Although it is totally possible that the few songs I've heard from them in the past haven't been among their best or I just have't really listened to them...

I will leaven the whole Dukes era alone though as he didn't work...at all...But Souza's Udo like voice is working for me now. And the music is really good...it's kind of like between Anthrax and Slayer in terms of aggressiveness. Which I think is a pretty nice balance.

I like finding new bands to enjoy.

Glad you're digging Exodus Charger. They really should've had've had a bigger career. At least to the level of Anthrax but the delay in releasing their debut due to record company issues meant they kinda missed the boat as thrash stared to take off. Bonded by Blood should've come out 12 months earlier in 84, then when it did come out they changed vocalist and took a another 2 years to release their follow up further halting their momentum. Thrash and the big 4 had well and truly taken off by that stage. Kirk Hammet actually formed Exodus with Baloff in 82 and played on their original demo's before being poached by Metallica after Dave was given the boot.

Once you've explored and immersed yourself in the Exodus catalogue I suggest you next check out Overkill. Another original pioneering thrash band that should've had a much bigger career than they've had.

Yeah I studied their history a bit too...they had a hard beginning compared to the big 4 for sure and they indeed seemed to have missed the boat a bit.

I also did see that about Kirk Hammet being in the band. Also something I did not know before.

Things were moving very fast in the heavy metal world in the early 80s and certain bands most certanly didn't make it to that train. Talent wise from what I heard in these two albums there isn't much missing. I do think that they aren't quite as catchy as Anthrax and Metallica were or as brutal as Slayer... Both singers vocal delivery isn't really standard either. It's not as fast as Tom's but also not as melodic as Joey's...maybe bit harder to sink in perhaps. I don't know.

I also read somewhere that Dave Mustaine always thought of it as Big 5 instead of 4 and wanted to include Exodus too but that it would have been too many bands already...

We have talked about Overkill before and funny enough Jack I was just thinking the same thing that now I will have to check them out too as I have meant to for a long time.
