More deaths can happen due to using generators indoors or badly-maintained space heaters, due to carbon monoxide buildup.

You live in a much smaller country, so all Finns have experience dealing with severe cold on a regular basis.  The entire southern half of the U.S. does not.  So when record breaking low temperatures hit the south, they are not as prepared as the rest of us in the northern half.

In fact, many people in the south don't even know how to drive in snow.  I have heard many stories of a rise in car accidents in the deep south, even when they only get an inch or two of snow, because it is such a rare event.

Also because we usually get a layer of ice before the snow lands. People who know how to drive on the snow get a real surprise when their tires start to spin on ice.

As far as how to drive on ice, the rules are simple:

1. Go slow
2. Don't panic

If you break rule number one, rule 2 can minimize the damage. If you follow rule one, rule two prevents the damage.

We're set up for freezing fog tonight, which means a new layer of ice could get deposited on roads and pavements where they cleared up today, just lovely.

Made a grocery run and got back OK. Things are slushy out there, but the ice mass on the sidewalks isn't really going anywhere. Thankfully, it's a rough ice, so we can get good traction if we don't stand too long to have it heat up and then freeze over slick.

And no signs of warming in the next 20 days! WTF!?!?

Colder-than-average winters are a global warming thing. Rapid arctic melting contributes to more variation in the Jet Stream, with further southward pushes from it. Winters are milder on average, but the coldest 5% of days are actually getting colder due to that impact of melting on Jet Stream meanders. Add in possible shutting down of the Gulf Stream, and what's warm for the Arctic becomes a snow dump for the Subarctic in Europe.

This is actually pretty normal standard winter here.

And yes if the golf stream is gonna die down in the future Finland (and all of scandinavia) is gonna turn into Siberia.

But people demand warming! WARMING damnit!!

It *is* warmer in the Arctic. Average temp for the region for this time of year is -30C, and it's running around -25C to -20C. https://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/meant80n.uk.php and then click on the 2026 numbers which will show as an orange overlay on the blue average temperature.

Been in a deep freeze since last Sunday's storm.  Will not see temperatures above the freezing mark until Tuesday, and that's only during the daytime.   :squint:

This is why I don't want to move to Finland, unless I can be in a city with subfloor heating on all the roads and sidewalks.
