More deaths can happen due to using generators indoors or badly-maintained space heaters, due to carbon monoxide buildup.

You live in a much smaller country, so all Finns have experience dealing with severe cold on a regular basis.  The entire southern half of the U.S. does not.  So when record breaking low temperatures hit the south, they are not as prepared as the rest of us in the northern half. 

In fact, many people in the south don't even know how to drive in snow.  I have heard many stories of a rise in car accidents in the deep south, even when they only get an inch or two of snow, because it is such a rare event.
