Title: The Halloween Thread
Post by: Typhon on October 11, 2018, 08:44:16 PM
I thought I would start a thread devoted to my favorite holiday. :death:  Post anything you like here that would in some way be related to Halloween. >:D  For example:

     1) pictures of yourself from past Halloweens
     2) decorations at your residence
     3) a good song to play at a Halloween party
     4) and if you watch a scary movie, I'd appreciate it if you post here as well as the movie thread.  I know I will be watching a few this month.

Happy Halloween to all!

(1957) The first in the Frankenstein series of films released by Hammer Studios.  Peter Cushing is excellent as the mad doctor.  Christopher Lee is marvelous as the creature.  Hammer puts great effort into realism, as can be seen by the intricate detail of the apparatus in the doctors laboratory.  8/10

Interesting...

My first encounter with Cushing was Sherlock Holmes and the Hound Of The Baskervilles with Christopher Lee...I was a Holmes fan before I was a Star Wars fan... :)

We don't have the same traditions for celebrating halloween as you USians and Finns, atleast not at my age. The last 10-15 years trick&treating have become more and more popular, though. We're getting Americanized... :P

But my own tradition is to take a hike in the forrest when it's pitch black, with nothing but a small flashlight. That make for a very special atmosphere. :) Hearing the sound of an animal just a few feet away, but not seeing anything, f.eks. Very nice. Very "Black Metal"... ;D

I first encountered Peter Cushing in the Hammer House films, superb actor. He and Christopher Lee both turned down the role of Dr. Loomis, Donald Pleasence another superb English actor took up the role, to which later Christopher Lee regretted.

I was a teenager in 1973 when this film was released, and I remember the huge headlines it made because of the "gore and horror" it brought to the screen. :o  In fact, people were warned that the film may be too upsetting for some adults.  Times were different then.

(1958) The second in the Frankenstein series of films from Hammer.  It maintains the high quality of the first film.  Cushing fits this character so well that sometimes when I see a picture of him, I think he is Victor Frankenstein. 7.5/10

(1972) From Amicus Studios (Hammer's biggest rival) comes a fine little film about a doctor who visits an asylum for the insane, to apply for the job as headmaster.  However, the previous headmaster is himself now a patient, and the doctor must talk with each to determine who he is.  Each talk is a flashback of a short story showing how and why the patient is there.  This is a typical style of an Amicus film.  Having 3 or 4 short stories within one movie.  Some generally good scares. 8/10

When I was a teacher, this would happen every late October...

STUDENT: Hey Mister, you got any Halloween music?

ME: Sure. Just a sec.

Student expects "The Monster Mash" or some other novelty song, or cheesy sound effects...

I, however, open with this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHOWKavdGRA

I rise from my chair, stare at the student. My face is expressionless. I point at the student with my right hand and make odd gestures in time with the bass chords with my left hand.

STUDENT: The fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...? Mister, you're really trippin'.

The student laughs, but the laughter becomes more nervous as I continue to gesture and stare. Then this track plays next:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvyhxY54M3I

STUDENT: Holy crap, that's really freaking me out, Mister.

STUDENT #2: I am literally scared about what happens next.

STUDENT #3: Is this what Hell sounds like?

STUDENT #4: (To Student) Oh my God, you know he's insane! *WHY* did you ask him to play Halloween music?

STUDENT: Jeez, I'm sorry! Please stop, Mister!

I keep staring at Student, but sit in my chair and fade out the volume on the Buddhist monks' throat singing... the room has a nervous silence about it...

ME: There are two things you fear most. Yourself, and the unknown. I will always have access to the unknown, do you understand?

STUDENT: Um... yeah?

ME: Then let that knowledge guide your judgment. Will you ever choose me as an enemy?

STUDENT: Good God, no.

ME: Remain faithful to your oath, or the unknown will destroy you.

I then play this song, at low volume, for its full duration and teach Economics over it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzyOi5XRu_g

And any time a student isn't paying attention, I become silent, expressionless, and point my right index finger at that student while I gesture in the air with my left hand. It's a total trip and, eventually, we laugh together...

... until I start that throat singing stuff up again as the class makes ready to leave. More than one student has a panicked expression.

Oh yeah, I got esoteric covered. :smug:

If I need music for little kids, I'll go with the cheery little novelty tunes and cheesy sound effects. If I did something like play "Voodoo" or "Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh" at full volume as I handed out candy, I'd terrify the little ones beyond their ability to withstand.

Teenagers, however, are ready to be terrified. That's why we teach them economics and government.

I gotta honestly say I've always found Omen to be overrated...it's not scary, the child actor isn't all that good and it's bit tedious. The only really good thing about it is Jerry Goldsmith's hauntingly awesome music!

Typhon, maybe you’d be so kind to help me out with a Peter Cushion film? It was about a doctor I think and he would go around killing women and taking their skin for his wife’s face, like plastic surgery or something, I can’t recall the name of this film, it use to scare the bejeebers out of me when I was a kid.

Very good movie Typhon, I bought this on DVD, the ending was great.

This was way before the Salem witch trials, great acting as well, sad to think that superstition and mass hysteria killed all those innocent people back then, brings to mind The Crucible another great movie.

Let me know if you ever get Corruption, I would like to now your opinion on it or if you’ve ever seen.

Great Czech film about witch trials, very gripping. The terror is not supernatural, but the manipulation of the concept of the supernatural.

Which can be even worse than the supernatural.

Indeed. This movie truly terrified me as I watched, out of a sense of helplessness in the face of the inquisitor's power.

Too much power for 1 person, frightening.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

I'm carving pumpkins as we speak...been so long it's hard to remember how it's done...

Plus my carving knife had a rendevous with my finger as well which put a small halt in the carving process...

I ended up going with the classics and not try out much anything new as I had forgotten just how to do it properly...takes a few pumpkins to get into the groove again...

I'll post what I have come up with once they are done.

Okay got my pumpkins done and only lost a bit of a finger!

This was a must obviously:

I did make a different template for the DIO logo this time...it's not perfect sadly...

I wanted to do something Sabbath related but had nothing...I was thinking about doing something with Henry but it's just so damn difficult to figure out how to make it so I went with something simple instead:

A simplified version of the Rules Of Hell cross on a tombstone...too cheesy?

This was my first one this year just to try and get things going again:

I ran out of time and still have two bigger pumpkins left...who knows I might do something with them tomorrow if I have the time...

Bringing this thread back to life (pun intended) for the upcoming ghoulish festivities.  >:D

We've got the house all decorated up and the candy purchased in advance of Thursday's festivities. It'll be our first Halloween in our new house, lots of kids on our street, so we're ready for some costumed fun.

My daughter is at a party tonight, with an excellent werewolf costume. She and my wife are fans of special effects and stuff like that, so they got some great fur, claws, and makeup.

A writer of horror stories (John Carradine) is invited to a "monster club" by a mysterious old gentleman (Vincent Price). There, three gruesome stories are told to him; between each story appropriate song are played for the evening's entertainment.  Made by one of the former owners of Amicus Studios, this film has a strong cast, fine sets, and a great mix of horror and black comedy.  Probably my favorite Halloween-time movie. 8.5/10

Today, my thoughts turned toward "The Wicker Man". One of the best horror films I've ever seen. It's got Christopher Lee in the lead antagonist role, so that's a big +1, but it's also not a matter of good vs evil, but of a collision of ways of life.

Me and my wife had a fun time sitting on the porch, handing out candy. It was a cool night, hardly a mosquito to be found. We had plenty of candy in the tub, so we had the kids take 3 each, because that adds up to one king-size candy when you do the choco-math.

I had some great oldies at first and then got goth-ier as the night deepened and the crowd got older.

One of my faves is The Crystals' "Frankenstein Twist"
