Rolling Stone's Top 500 of all time - revised 2021 edition
« on: September 17, 2021, 05:19:03 PM »
It's an interesting list with next to no metal/hard rock. Surprisingly, 148 of the 500 - almost a third - are tracks that I would play on my Oldies show that covers the roots of rock, the golden age 1955-1963, and the soul of Motown/Stax up to about 1969 or so, some slippage into the early 70s.

The 70s are the era most heavily referenced, and that doesn't leave much room for the 80s and after.

At the end of the day, it's a list. I would argue that there are more influential/important songs that got left off the list to make room for what seem to be pet tunes of various writers, but, well, if I was making a list, I'd have my pet songs and get flak for putting them in instead of something else. Totally absent, though, was Frank Zappa. That's a huge miss, in my view, as the man was influential far beyond his limited radio airplay. Also missing is Fats Domino's "Be My Guest" which was so important for Ska and Reggae as a foundational tune.

The Shangri-Las got *two* mentions and Deep Purple only *one*. Black Sabbath got two, and they are the obvious two from the Paranoid album... So according to this list, the Shangri-Las are as important as Black Sabbath.  :redcard:

LOL, I just found out I read the 2004 list! The new one looks to have about half the oldies on it, bummer...

New list has a Motorhead tune, Ace of Spades. OK, that's cool. Also Don't Fear the Reaper, Welcome to the Jungle, Enter Sandman, Iron Man, Paranoid, School's Out, You Shook Me All Night Long, Master of Puppets, Dream On, Sweet Child O' Mine, and, uh, that's all the hard rock and metal.

AND THEY PUT IN JUMP BY VAN HALEN WHAT THE HELL

Only 70 from the eras I play even though 3 are in the top ten. Yeah, this year's list got way indulgent...
