On the Look Out For...
« on: March 27, 2021, 11:51:16 AM »
A record!

I always seem to have a specific record, just one, that I set a goal to acquire. Once I manage to get it, then eventually another one takes its place in my head.

For example, I had been on the lookout for the LP Heaven is in Your Mind by Traffic, in mint condition, for years. I think it took me 20 years to eventually find one in that condition. Then there was Black Sabbath's Forbidden. Another time it was Rush's debut on the Moon label.

Currently, and for the past few years, it is Nobody Move by Yellowman, on the Volcano label. So I thought I'd throw it out there - if anyone comes across this platter please let me know.

Some info:

I'm not rich, so I do have a budget, but I'm willing to pony up a few hundred for the right one.

I have requests in at a couple of big record stores in the US, and a couple of small shops in Jamaica.

I also have a request in with Winston Foster (King Yellowman) himself.

It is an LP (not the 45, although I might be interested in one as a stop-gap, but don't really collect 45s).

The Volcano record label was run by Henry "Junju" Lawes out of Kingston, Jamaica.

Nobody Move does NOT have a catalog number. It was released in 1983.

Thanks!

Here's some pictures from Discogs:

That looks to be about as "indie" as they can get!

Ha, no doubt. Not quite as indie as a privately pressed release, but certainly very localized. The label itself put out quite a few releases, and was one of the more popular at that time and in that locale. Contributing factors that make this particular record tough to find include that the song "Nobody Move" was a massive hit, and so it was picked up by Greensleeves in England and released internationally on that label almost immediately. Also, it's dancehall music. So the people that bought it in Jamaica did so to party to it.

I've been given a production estimate for that record on that label of around 1000. The only person who would probably really know would be Junju, but he's long dead. I've also been told that because it became so popular that Volcano records had a second production run about the same time that it came out on Greensleeves - so 1984 or so. No clue about how many of those where made.
