I love this movie and I thinlk that even though it has it's share of problems it is still the greatest of all the Star Trek films.

Catching up with the classics I finally saw The French Connection on rental. The multi-Oscar winning film from 1971 starring Gene Hackman as narcotics cop Jimmy 'Popeye' Doyle, Roy Schieder as his side kick Buddy Russo and directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist). Doyle and Russo investigate the tipoff of a shipment of heroin with a link with France.

The film is gritty, slow in places and often violent. The classic car chase following the train (apparently filmed without permission) stands the test of time, but some of the stakeout scenes drag. It's nearly 50 years old and some aspects are showing their age, but that's fine, much like Dirty Harry, the story, action and the acting are first class. 8/10

Come and See (Russian: Иди и смотри)

If you want to see a movie about the end of the world, look no further. This is about the partisan-Nazi struggle in Byelorussia in 1943.

From Wikipedia:

According to Klimov (the director), the film was so shocking for audiences, however, that ambulances were sometimes called in to take away particularly impressionable viewers, both in the Soviet Union and abroad. Also according to Klimov, during one of the after-the-film discussions, an elderly German stood up and said: "I was a soldier of the Wehrmacht; moreover, an officer of the Wehrmacht. I traveled through all of Poland and Belarus, finally reaching Ukraine. I will testify: everything that is told in this film is the truth. And the most frightening and shameful thing for me is that this film will be seen by my children and grandchildren"

I watched it again because I wanted some perspective... isolation while I chat freely is leagues better than the situation portrayed in the film. Life may not be easy, but the survivors do not envy the dead.

I enjoyed it a lot more this time. I missed important details the first time.
He also asks a few questions that will never be answered:
Who is Rey’s mother?
What did Fin want to say to Rey?
Kylo Ren's fate is ... bizarre.
Some feminist scenes weren't really essential
anyway ; good movie.

This was a movie that I saw when I was a little kid, and I think it may have been one of the first times I was taken to the theater. Anyway, this one has not aged well and though the script has it's strengths it really leads to more questions than real answers. 6.5/10

We watched Ratatouille over the weekend. Such a delightful, lovely little movie that's not afraid to have an ending that is happy in life and not some kind of cinematic lottery win.

If this had been a comic or a graphic novel of Spider-Man I would have been very disappointed. As a movie though I found it entertaining enough, with incredible special effects and that big budget charm. 7.5/10

^^^I’ve kind of lost interest in these rebooted reboots. Just seems unnecessary and too soon after after the original reboots. The Dark Knight Rises seemed a good way to wrap up Batman for the time being and same goes for the Raimi Spider-Man movies. They’ve had two different actors play Spider-Man since the Raimi films and will be two since the Nolan Batman films.

^^^ Yes I am getting sick of these reboots as well. The quality seems to be on a downward trajectory, as I found the Raimi Spider-Man films to be the definitive versions.

That being said, I think that Tom Holland is a very good actor and I hope that he is able to not be typecast as I think he has something to offer.

Spider-man isn't my favourite comic book character. The Toby Maguire films were initially pretty good and kick started the modern era of comic book films. Andrew Garfield didn't help my opinion on the franchise and if his films were deleted from history then the gap between Maguire and Tom Holland would have been more acceptable. Holland is a good choice being a great actor and also more in line with the characters age from the comics.

As a character in the Avengers comics Spider-man couldn't be ignored in the recent MCU films; although his two solo outings while solid are among the weakest of the MCU films (but I really like the MCU films!).

I haven't seen those new Spiderman movies yet...I should.

I do have to say after Superman Spiderman is my least favourite superhero though...

And those Raimi movies were atrocious. Toby Maguire was beyond horrible...one of the worst casting choices ever in a superhero movie...well with Ben Affleck.

But Tom Holland was really really good in Avengers. I was very positively surprised by who he made Spiderman actually funny and enjoyable.

Can we have a superhero film that *doesn't* spend time going back over the origin story?

I love this movie and I think it is equal to the original classic. The cast works great together and the acting is strong. Also very entertaining with some genuine charm and humor!! 9/10
