The Top 4 are pretty much interchangeable depending on my mood, but at...

#4 Hawkwind - Live Chronicles

Hawkwind did an album in 1985 called Chronicles of the Black Sword, a collaboration with Michael Moorcock to bring his Elric character to life. It's an album I like a lot. This spawned the Live Chronicles tour which brought us this album... which I like even more than the studio album. It incorporates songs off other albums if they seemed to fit the story, as well as one song which only ever appears on this tour Moonglum (Friend Without A Cause), which is one of my favourites and a song I would have loved to hear a studio version of. I saw a version of the show at Conspiracy the 1987 World SF Convention in Brighton... it knocked my socks off!!

This one's a real amaze-o-tron of an album!

Time for my number 4 choices...

For Non-DP, it will be...

I know it was also one of Billy's faves. If you haven't heard it, you NEED to. I bought it for "Easy Livin'", but I keep coming back for "Circle of Hands". That church organ sound in the concert hall is so emotionally wonderful.

My #4 DP set is...

Mk III: The Final Concerts

Yes, there are parts where the band is all "WTF???" as Blackmore test-drives some licks he was working on secretly with Elf (minus *their* guitarist), but the live versions of Stormbringer material are what keep me coming back. The title track of that album just KILLS live, and "Lady Double Dealer" is another monster tune on the stage.

It looks like it's just you and me now Zs!

#3: Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Live Bullet

I don't know when I found out about this album, yes, my sister owned it, but I never listened to her stuff! And to be honest it's really not the sort of music (Southern Rock/Boogie/Country) I would give the time of day to... but I really, really love the album. I don't have anything else by Seger surely it couldn't get any better then this?

Live Bullet is one I would have picked. Excellent recording.

I was listening to Waiting for Columbus from Little Feat the other day, but it is an 'almost" for me. I think it is very well done, but it just doesn't quite make it so nope.

So for this installment of my no-list "list", I have for your consideration Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! by the Rolling Stones. Very well put together and the whole band exudes attitude.

This next one I'll mention is a good set of live tunes, but it doesn't make my actual no-list because I can't listen to it unless I'm drunk, which hasn't happened in a long time New York Town: Recorded Live at the Lone Star Cafe by Johnny Paycheck.

#2. Black Sabbath - Live At Hammersmith Odeon

Not an easy choice for my favourite Black Sabbath live album, this could easily have been Live Evil, Past Lives or Cross Purposes Live. I went with this one though. A good mix of old and new songs and great performances.

As mentioned earlier my top 4 are pretty much interchangeable. But ...

#1. Rush - Exit... Stage Left

This album marks the end of phase 1 of Rush - where they went from Prog Rock with extended side-spanning songs to short form synth oriented output. This album has a great choice of songs which are well performed and the sound is great.

My Number Three Non-DP:

Mott the Hoople Live

I love this album, and Mott's so much better live than in the studio. The best part is the medley at the end, followed by "Walking with a Mountain." Some of the best bass and drums in the biz in Overend and Buffin, and Ian Hunter's songwriting is always a treat. The remastered 2CD version is the one to get, too.

My Number Three DP:

Machine Head Live (Copenhagen 1972)

The album had just dropped and the band was on tour with a new setlist. Danish TV recorded this concert and it's great to see all the stuff going on in and around the songs, from equipment changes to shouting at yobbos throwing things at the stage. Great energy and you don't even care it's in black and white once the machine gets rolling.

My #2 Non-DP:

I love this live set from Motorhead. Yes, it's only the early stuff, but it's also some of the absolute best stuff.

My #2 DP Live LP...

Live at the Olympia

And why this one for #2, because I think you all know what I'll choose for my #1... well, it's the horn section, to be honest. I love the addition of the horns on some of the standards and the fun that they lend to those tracks. This is a very, very playful and loose set, full of smiles and good rocking fun. With horns on a few tracks, so yeah. I love it, I does.

I have to say it’s very difficult to place these in any particular order. It’s really just eeny, meeny, miny, moe at this point.

#8

Tokyo Tapes(1978)

Brilliant live album capturing the quintessential Scorpions lineup over 2 nights at the the Nakano Sun Plaza Japan in 1978. This album just ticks all the boxes, great lineup, great recording, great songs and great performances which was to be Uli Jon Roth’s final performances with the band before departing. Total classic!

My number one DP live set...

Made in Japan.

Like there was any doubt about my call on that one.

To any lurkers or children of the future, go look that up and be sure you listen to it before you die.

My number one non-DP live set is one I truly love like a brother:

Rory Gallagher Irish Tour '74

Favorite track off of it is "Walk on Hot Coals", a true epic that gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
