Everything Louder Than Everything Else: Your Top Ten Motörhead Albums
« on: July 11, 2020, 11:36:04 PM »
Motörhead, sweet and wonderful Motörhead. 22 studio releases(23 if you count the unauthorised On Parole) over a 40 year span. Not only one of the great and legendary bands of our time but also one of the hardest working led by one of the most iconic figures in all of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Mr Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister

You’ve been given the hard but pleasant task of squeezing their entire studio catalogue into your top ten order of favourites. You can do it countdown style or just list your top ten in order in one hit.

Born To Lose. Live To Win

Take it away....

Gonna kick off my list with #10

Kiss Of Death(2006)

Released in 2006 Kiss of Death had Lemmy and co getting back to a more blusier approach but still ultra heavy. A very consistent album throughout with great production and a good amount of variation for a later Motörhead album. The albums that followed were good but Kiss of Death is the last great Motörhead album for mine. I could’ve easily had it as high as #6 such is its quality and how little there is between my 10-6

Favourite tracks: Sucker, Devil I Know, Trigger, God Was Never On Your Side, Living In The Past and Sword Of Glory but no weak or mediocre song to be found here.

That's one I don't have, I failed to buy any between March or Die and Aftershock. Something I ought to rectify!

Yes that’s a big chunk of great albums you’ve deprived yourself off there. Maybe this thread will work as a good pointer for you for possible future listens/discoveries.

Yes, it's 10 albums, and at least two I recognise as being fan favourites (some I don't recognise at all). There's a whole bunch of bands I stopped buying in the 90s and only came back to in 2010s... it's probably saved me a fortune! ;)

Question?

Studio albums only or live albums too?

Anyways
#10

March Or Die (1992)

Kicks off with the fantastic fast rocker Stand then going into a fabulous cover of Cat Scratch Fever this album really rocks. The Ozzy collaboration Hellraiser is just as good as the one on No More Tears. Other high points are Jack The Ripper, Name In Vain and ofcourse the strangely groovy and super heavy title track.
Even the ballad featuring Ozzy and Slash is pretty good eventhough it is the weakest point of the album.

I usually don't like to include live albums on lists like these...I love live albums but they are a different entity from a studio album and lists like these kind of should be about the studio stuff...

I’m with Charger. Live albums and compilation albums are a different entity. Besides, Motörhead have such a large studio catalogue anyway there’s no need to include live albums.

My first studio Motorhead album (I had No Remorse, the comp album) and I was seriously impressed with it. Still love to listen to this record.

Sacrifice(1995)

Sacrifice was Motörhead’s 12th studio album as well as the last to feature Würzel and the last album as a four piece and it’s fucking crushing!
Following on from the brilliant and ferocious Bastards Lemmy took the heavy even a step further on this as well as brought a little more of the punk influence. The production is raw with crushing downtuned guitars and killer riffage all over it. Lemmy’s voice is probably the most gravely it’s ever been on this album which matches the heaviness of the recording. The title track is a standout and became a set staple in live shows for many years. Other great tracks are “Sex & Death“, “Over Your Shoulder“, “Dog Face Boy”, “In Another Time”, and the two bluesier rockers “Don’t Waste Your Time“ and “Out of the Sun”. Great album.

So no Live albums and no compilations... I think my top 3 has been whittled down to a Top 1! ;)

Did you say you have 14 album Kilo? If you take out the live & compilation album(s) does it still leave you with at least 10? If so, you can just rank them in order?

Yeah, just the one live album (the brilliant No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith) and 2 compilations (including the brilliant No Remorse)... not sure where Undercover stands!

That leaves 12 (because I bought Kiss of Death yesterday), but I need to listen to them all so I can rank them. I may just list my top 10 once you guys have finished yours.

^^^Sounds like a good plan  ;)

Very interested to see your take on some of the albums you’ve missed along the way.
