Your Top 5 Movie Sequels
« on: May 08, 2020, 12:10:35 AM »
Sequels can be hit or miss and over the years theres probably been more misses than hits but there’s still been a good lot of sequels that have been awesome with some even bettering its predecessor.

So what are your top 5 all time favourite movie sequels? And I’m referring to sequels that directly followed the original movie.

1. The Godfather Part II
2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
3. Mad Max 2
4. Aliens
5. The Empire Strikes Back

I'll probably re-write this, but my immediate thoughts are:

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
Toy Story 2
The Dark Knight
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Captain America: Winter Soldier

These are all better than their first films, but also the original films are all great in their own right.

Note: I went with Winter Soldier over Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2 because despite being a great film it doesn't come close to GotG: Vol 1.

Interesting choices there Kilo. You’re obviously a big fan of the modern superhero genre.

I think Judgement Day will be on most lists and can’t fault Toy Story 2 although I do like the 3rd one more, which is a topic for another day.

T2 : Judgement Day
Aliens
Another 48 Hours
Die Hard: With A Vengeance (wait...direct sequals only? BUGGER!!!! Okay...this is my BONUS choice then)
Leathal Weapon 2
Beverly Hills Cop 2

Those came from top of my head...might revise them later on...

@Jack
I do have a wider taste in films but some genres tend not to have sequels, or only rarely, there are few dramas which get to the trilogy that the Godfather managed.

I did contemplate including the LOTR: The Two Towers, but even though it's a great film, it is the weakest of the three and I tried to just include films where the sequel was better.

You're right there. Superhero movies are made for sequels and almost all do really well. The Dark Knight is another great one. Even the original Superman II was a great sequel.

Those are the first that pop up in my mind. These are real sequels to the first of what will become a franchise for each of them.
Not all of them are better than the previous one, even if it's the case for some of them (see my notes at the end of the line), but are nevertheless excellent.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day    1<2
Aliens                                     1>2
Mad Max 2                              1<2
The Matrix Reloaded                1=2
The Bourne Supremacy            1=2

Day Watch, sequel to Night Watch. Night Watch was intense and psychological... Day Watch was the same, but with way more action. Great pair of movies and Day Watch finishes on top.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!!

A Shot in the Dark, second in the Pink Panther series. The first missed out by not featuring Sellers, but they fixed that and good in this great little film!

Drunken Master II - subtitle should be, "Revenge of the Screenwriters" as this one has a much better plot and corresponding action sequences. Chopsocky at its finest.

Sanjuro - Toshiro Mifune's Samurai with No Name returns in this great sequel to Yojimbo. This one has much more humor than the first, but does not fail to deliver on story or action.

Crap! Your mention of Far East film has reminded me of a film I really should have put on my list:

The Raid II - such a great action film. There's so little dialogue amidst the expertly choreographed fight scenes I can forgive it for being subtitled from Indonesian.

A Shot in the Dark is a good one, love Peter Sellers. My favourite funny man.

I’d probably say too, the movies I listed all bettered the first movies.

A couple of other enjoyable sequels were Back To The Future II, Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom and Evil Dead 2

Let me preface this by saying there are a lot of sequels I have not watched because I figured they were going to be awful.  But here are 5 I would definitely recommend:

The Godfather Part II
Magnum Force
Demetrius and the Gladiators (sequel to The Robe)
The French Connection II
The Color of Money (sequel to The Hustler)

Watched Back To The Future II today as it was on one of my pay TV movie channels. Is a little dated now but still a fun watch. The overacting though  :twitch:

^^ The Color of Money was a great film, I agree.

And Back to the Future II is a great piece of movie fun. My daughter loves that series and has even watched all of the cartoons that came out after the movies.
