Y'all know I can get along fine without the Slayer, but I'll be glad to bend my ears to Thin Lizzy.

1. Made in Japan
2. Thick as a Brick
3. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (letting Billy bring Sabotage)
4. Rainbow Rising
5. Ship Ahoy
6. Heaven and Hell
7. Scheherazade
8. Mountain Live: The Road Goes Ever On
9. Machine Head
10. Oops! Wrong Planet
11. Photo Finish
12. Bugs Henderson: At Last
13. Purpendicular
14. Viva Terlingua

The album is from Texas, so it may be bigger than others we've seen so far.  :smug:

Back in 1973, there were a bunch of hippies down in Austin that were sick and tired of being told to cut their hair and to change out of their blue jeans and to play by Nashville's rules. So they shot the finger in the direction of "all that Nashburg muck" and made their own damn albums. They sang each others' songs and had a great time of it. They got called a lot of names, and one of the better ones to stick was "Texas Outlaw Country". It was a lot more electric than Nashville at the time - they had guitar solos and what-not - but they weren't so wild as to be Lynyrd Skynyrd. They were still country, but they were country on their own terms.

And I love 'em, I do.

Now, maybe nobody else needs an album as in-your-face Texian as this one, but I sure do. Especially for the closer, "London Homesick Blues." That song will get me to feel proud and homesick and happy and full of memories and tear up a little every damn time I play it, because it's about me every time I'm not in Texas. "Desperados Waiting for a Train" is a true classic from Guy Clark, one of America's best songwriters, ever.

This album is Texas' musical Declaration of Independence. Not that it needed sayin', we just like to secede down here. We don't like staying out on our own, just let us secede for a day or two every so often, and then we'll be back to where we was before. Every song I either sing along with or cry along with, whichever. But I can taste the BBQ down at Black's in Lockhart when I hear this album. I see the bluebonnets in April out on the Hill Country roads. I pass around the turn just south of Gonzales on 183 where the coastal plain opens out from the hills. I walk up to where the Half-Price Books used to be up on Guadalupe. I'm driving carefully through those consarned speed traps in Waco so I can get to Gerik's Czech Bakery in West. It's a breakfast taco in Rockport and an enchilada in San Antonio. It's the Cadillac Ranch outside of Amarillo and that gawdawful long stretch of road to the Valley on 281. It's the sign just after the New Mexico border that says "El Paso 14 / Orange 982" or whatever the brain-stunning miles to Orange are. It's the Whataburger on the "good" side of the border in Texarkana. It's the relief of rolling past the "Welcome to Texas" sign, knowing we only have half our miles ahead of us now, getting home. :)

There's a reason Guy Clark is played a lot in my house. Even my headbangin' son and daughter who's allergic to country will play him. Simply put, he's an American national treasure. This album is like a documentary put to music, and the songs always resonate with me. And, yes, I used to live on the South Coast of Texas in the same town Guy lived in, Rockport. I love this album not because of that connection, but mostly for the title tune. It captures both the life in that town as well as a stoic worldview all in a matter of minutes. The rest of the album is great to sing along with and that's worth something.

I met Guy once, back when I lived in Austin, and although I didn't say hardly more than "Thank you very much for the music, sir," and I got a smile and a humble "thank you" in return, it's one of the happiest moments of my young life, shakin' that man's skilled, hard, and precise hand.

Just wouldn’t be right to bring Back In Black and not a Bon Scott era album.
