Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (2023)

During the war in Afghanistan, a local interpreter risks his own life to carry an injured sergeant (Jake Gyllenhaal) across miles of dangerous and grueling terrain.

A fictitious story, but based on a real war and the many interpreters who assisted in the conflict against the Taliban.  9/10

That one has been popping up on one of my streaming services...might have to check it out then! Thanks for the recommendation Typhon!

The Children Act (2018)

Set in London, a High Court judge (Emma Thompson), in the midst of a marital crisis, must decide if she should order a life-saving blood transfusion for a teen with cancer despite his family's refusal to accept medical treatment for religious reasons.

Fine acting in this thought provoking story. 8/10

BABYLON A.D.

A mercenary named Taroop gets a mission to escort two women to New York from east Europe through Russia in a post WW3 setting. He starts to learn that there is something very strange about the younger woman and that there is more to the mission than he ever imagined.

Vin Diesel does a routine preformance and Michelle Yeoh and Melanie Thierry do okay jobs as well...

But the movie is a bit of a mess actually. The setting shows a lot of promise and the story (based on a book called Babylon Babies by Maurice G Dantec) isn't bad but the movie just kind of trudges on and is frankly bit boring, which is saying something when it only has a running time of 90 minutes. There isn't that much action and it kind of feels like parts were actually missing...which is no surprise as the movie was shortened quite a bit in post production.

One of Vin Diesel's worst movies I'd say.

Shock and Awe (2017)

The true story of the group of journalists (Woody Harrelson, James Marsden, Rob Reiner, Tommy Lee Jones) covering George Bush's planned invasion of Iraq in 2003.  They were the only major journalists not convinced of the presidents claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and chemical weapons factories.

The film is peppered with actual news footage and is factually accurate throughout.  The personal stories within the film are well acted and very entertaining.  9/10

THUNDERBOLT and LIGHTFOOT

A young drifter joins forces with an old bank robberer to travel around and try to avoid two guys trying to kill them. Together they hatch a plan to rob an armored car service vault, but things go wrong.

Young Jeff Bridges joins forces with Clint Eastwood, George Kennedy and Geoffrey Lewis in this wannabe wacky comedy.

The story is rather non existent and is more or less just a series of gags, most of which aren't all that funny. Clint Eastwood is well out of place with this one...the only one really getting to show some chops here is George Kennedy whose comedic timing and bad guy presense is great.

I am not surprised this Clint Eastwood movie had pretty much flew under the radar here and that I had never seen it before.

I'd say this is for absolute die hard Clint fans only...not a very good movie.

Indeed. There I times I want to see a really really awful film, even if just in parts, to better appreciate the good stuff out there.

There are films that are so bad they're good, and then there are films so bad, they're really bad.

Well sometimes cause how can you know what a certain food tastes like before you try?

Same goes for movies...you can't tell if it's good or bad until you watch it....I for one am not gifted with foresight so I actually need to watch the movie (or taste the food) in order to find out! ;D

Well sometimes I do...meaning that I do know that a movie might not be that good but I'll watch it anyways...and sometimes it has led to a positive surprise...meaning most other people were dead wrong about the film. It happens.

Also ofcourse movies that are so damn bad that they're funny are a whole different animal which I enjoy immensly. :D

Come and Find Me (2016)

When his girlfriend goes missing, David must track down her whereabouts after he realizes she's not who she was pretending to be.

A very good mystery despite not having any actors I recognize.  9/10

BRANNIGAN

A tough Chicago cop Lt. Brannigan is sent to retrieve a prisoner from London who is his old nemesis. Upon arriving he finds out that not only has his prisoner been released but he's also been kidnapped. So working with Scotland Yard he tries to find out just what has happened and he also discovers that an assassin is after him.

John Wayne shines on one of his last ever preformances in this action comedy...along with Richard Attenborough as the head of Scotland Yard and Judy Geeson as a young officer helping Brannigan along.

The movie is pretty slow paced but it is so well acted and directed that it doesn't matter. The Duke still could deliver a heck of a preformance even though he was in ailing health having just being diagnosed with heart issues and having suffered a pneumonia.
There is a good mix of police procedural, action and borderline slapstic comedy.

I do find it somewhat odd that I had not seen this one before...being a huge Duke fan and all...I have seen Rooster Cogburn and Cahill of his later works.
