Cool Astronomy / Cosmology Stuff
« on: June 18, 2019, 10:30:13 AM »
No, not a thread about Rainbow's "Stargazer" song. This is for sharing thoughts, ideas, and cool stuff we find that deals with all the stuff outside of earth... the *true* wide open spaces of the cosmos.

And, just in time, this popped up in my YouTube suggestions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FocZf26yTU0

This one about how black hole size closely correlates with galaxy size is very cool.

Professor Brian Cox is currently doing a 5-part documentary series on the BBC called The Planets. Taking an in depth look into the latest science we have about the history and formation of our planets. It is absolutely fascinating stuff to me. I'm guessing it will be shown elsewhere soon enough... I've already pre-ordered the Blu Ray!

Previously he has done documentaries: Wonders of the Solar System and Wonders of the Universe, equally impressive in my opinion.

Here's one that I enjoyed watching, not least for pointing spaceships the *other* way...

There was a BBC documentary that came out quite a few years ago now called The Planets. Was about a 10 part series or something. Did you ever watch that? Sounds very similar to the one you mention. I have it on DVD.

The name is very generic unfortunately, but the one I mentioned above is definitely a new series. That one you mention is from 1999 and I'm sure it's one I've seen, I might have it on DVD too (after a quick search I can't find it so maybe I didn't... or maybe my dad has borrowed it!!)

I've been an astronomy buff since I was a kid...

I am also a member of the Finnish astrological society Ursa....I think I menetioned that on the UFO thread a while back.

There's a very cool astrological history show on Nat Geo called Cosmos, it's hosted by the brilliant Neil DeGrasse Tyson. If you haven't checked that out you really should. It's highly entertaining and full of interesting topics. It also has a pretty strong Star Trek connection as it's produced and partly written by Brannon Braga and features guests like Patrick Stewart.

^^^

When you mentioned Cosmos I first thought you meant the Carl Sagan series from what must be nearly 40 years ago. I've got that one on DVD but it is horribly dated now, but still a great watch.

I haven't seen this new Cosmos you mention, I'll have to seek it out.

In fact this is inspired by that old Carl Sagan series indeed. Most certainly worth watching.

Ah, Carl Sagan! I don't agree with all of his philosophical musings, but I do appreciate them and there are more than a few that I cherish.
