I don't think this has been asked here yet, but what are your top 10 songs by Metallica? (I'm not going to do a Typhon style analysis when it's all over!). My top 10 is:

That would be my list...
Harvester has always been my absolute favourite..The Bleeding Of me coming in close second because of the guitar work...and the main riff is a killer. King Nothing because of the bass line has always been a big favourite of mine.

I know I left out some of the bigger hits but honestly the bigger hits aren't among their best work..mainly One and Enter Sandman.

I wanted to include Battery but ran out of room and I do think that I like Motorbreath more...the slow intro has always been a bit of a turn off for me..

I am very interested in reading Jack's list because he is such a big fan...biggest one among us all!

Leper and No Remorse are underrated from their early works and absolutely crushing live.
#1 and #2 are my definitive top 2 everything else is in no particular order. My list is dominated by the first 3 albums. Not that I don't like anything that followed, I like just about everything they've ever done but no songs that came after Master can knock any of those out of my top 10.

I purposely left out cover songs to make it a little easier on myself but Am I Evil? Is my favourite.

Honestly I am not a big fan of any of the "big" instrumentals...they are just waaaaaaay too long...A good instrumental is nice and short...it's too easy to get bored with a long one...especially if it gets repetetive..

With regard to my supplementary question, I'm inclined to agree with Charger regarding the long instrumentals, they don't do much for me. I will say that Suicide and Redemption is probably the best and when I listened to Call of Ktulu yesterday I only managed about 6 minutes before moving on to something more interesting! Orion is okay but ultimately it's something I skip more often than play.

I'd forgotten that To Live is to Die is an instrumental because I rarely listen to Justice and wiki doesn't list it as an instrumental like it does with the other three!

If I put Metallica on at a party it would be to get everyone to go home because it was time for my bed!
