I just like H&H because it’s simple and classy and not over illustrated and it’s also provocative.

Not sure what's up with that picture - I'll just remove it.

Deep Purple album covers defy logic. I think one of the unspoken reasons Compact Disks took hold like they did was due to people finally being able to buy some DP without having to look at 12" x 12" slabs of dog shit.

Ouch! This is becoming a DP roast here! When does Don Rickles start insulting Ian Gillan?

In case you all were wondering, that picture I tried to post was of a Deep Purple album cover. Even the forum AI puked it out. And the forum doesn't have AI!

I have so much stuff at home, vinyl,cd’s, boxsets, posters/prints, signed stuff, other memorabilia, toys, figurines and books, but 90% of it is in storage and not being properly enjoyed and appreciated because of having too much of it and too little room.

I’m turning 50 next year, how much longer do I have on this earth? 20 years? 20 years to at least enjoy this stuff, but am I ever going to? I’ve always planned on renovating or building a new home and envisaged having a dedicated music room/man cave to display all this stuff but I fear it’s never going to actually happen or at least the way I envisioned. What would happen if I passed suddenly tomorrow? I’ve already planned on my vinyl going to my son but he doesn’t share anywhere near the same passion for it as he does the actual music. There is just so much of all the other stuff that is worth a quite considerable amount of money but in no way would/could my family be able to go through it all, price it up and sell it. Just way too much time and effort would be involved, let alone putting in on eBay, shipping it etc... But yet I still continue to buy this crap and store it away in the hope that one day I’ll properly be able to enjoy it  :-[

That day is quickly running out though.

I think/fear most of it will eventually most likely just be scrapped or given away.

Quite a depressing thought when I think about the whole tale...

^^^ I am the same Jack - I have thousands of DVDs, Blurays, CDs, Toys and books. Some I bought years ago and still have not even opened them. In my tiny apartment this leaves little left for living in.
Sometimes I think I should just sell all of it, but I would never get back what I payed for them.

Indeed. That's a very heavy thought of the day Jack! But it is also one that many people face (as Thel proved), and it is a very legitimate concern.

It would be easy for me to offer possible solutions/ways of thinking about it, because I was hit with that same concern a long time ago and dealt with it, but I'm not going to. Out of respect for you, because I know you'll come to terms with it in your own time in your own way. Who knows, you may find yourself looking at 60 (or 52, or whenever), and decide to go ahead and build that man-cave...for no other reason than you can and you enjoy it.

Keep the faith, brother!

I hear you Thel and Thanks Vyn. The thing is, the amount of money I’ve spent on this stuff, even in the last 10 years, let alone 35-40 years, I could’ve used that money to renovate and build my man cave  :-X

Haven’t even been able to enjoy my vinyl the last few years as my son has taken over the lounge room(where the stereo and turntable is) with his online gaming. I bought a huge 60 inch 4K Oled TV for that room a couple of years ago to enjoy movies and sport on but I could count on two hands the amount of times I’ve actually watched something on it.

Couple of things to note -

There's a difference between collecting and listening. Some things you buy to collect, so that you have enjoyment from the fact that it is in your possession, making a complete set with all the others of its kind. There is an enjoyment from the sense of finality.

Some things you buy to listen, where it's the memory of the notes played that lasts with you. The item has a sentimental attachment, but that attachment can also be associated with events surrounding the song or album when it was first listened to or when it was playing during some kind of significant event.

I did a lot of collecting until I realized the day had come when I really didn't care if I had all the DP live releases. I had enough. Years later, as I got ready to move to my current house, I had the same 50-something realization that not only did my kids not *really* want all my vinyl, I didn't want all my mom's vinyl when that day came. So I found an enthusiastic kid that had a big house and a desire to dive into tons of free albums, and just gave it ALL away.

I know what it was all worth and what I spent on it. And I gave it away to someone who would care for most of it and sell the stuff she didn't want and I felt very happy about that.

I had some other stuff I had collected where rats got into the storage - bunch of books - and ate and crapped it all into nothing. Made me glad I gave away my records instead of putting them into storage, where they'd go nowhere.

He’s 16, so a bit to go before he makes the big move but it seems it takes a lot longer for kids these days to do that. Maybe they’re a lot smarter than we give them credit for  ;)

I was 18 when I moved out of home.
