Rod Evans Question...
« on: February 13, 2018, 07:01:57 PM »
What do you all say, was Evans' best work with DP or with Captain Beyond? Or were they the same in your opinon?

I do love me some Rod Evans with Deep Purple, but I'm fanatic about that first Captain Beyond album, I think it's his best output.

We'll leave aside Evans' abortive 1980 "reunion" tour aside for the time being...

Captain Beyond, for me. Easy. But neither DP MK I nor Captain Beyond were able to realise their full potential, IMO. In Purple's case, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Captain Beyond had all the talent they needed to go places. Other factors were what worked against them.

Well, I know a big problem with CB was Evans' inability to finish a tour due to health issues. That's one thing that a lot of kids wanting to be touring musicians fail to consider... the road really takes a toll on health.

I have never heard Captain Beyond but I didn't really like Evans' vocals in Purple either...

I haven't really listened to any Captain Beyond material (so thanks for the link, Zzzptm and I'll try to check it shortly) so can't compare Rod Evans' work w/that band to his DP output but I will state that I do like the Mark I DP material although Mark II's songs are unmatched in my view.

...and to touch upon the bogus DP band that Mr. Evans put together in 1980, was anyone here aware that the compilation album, Deepest Purple The Very Best of Deep Purple was put together soley to capitalize (read cash in) on the publicity caused by the bogus band?

Always wondered why that came out in 1980, of all years...
