Well well well... the Scottish out drink the Irish! Who knew!?

By a margin of 3x what they sell on St. Patrick's Day, according to The Boston Globe. The Scots have another match this weekend vs Morocco, so the consumption is expected to continue at higher-than-expected rates.

I assume there will be warnings to seek shelter and emergency beer distribution hotlines. :smug:

So Kier "Screw all farmers" Starmer resigned...

Big shocker! The revolving door in the UK parlament continues...and seems that the labour party is losing it's hold again as well.

I saw that - UK's Labour Party is losing its collective mind, worried about getting tossed in 2029. I wonder how different this next guy is going to be? If the momentum keeps building by degrees until the general election, there might just be a viable third party taking over and the Labour versus Conservative paradigm gets shifted.

That'd make a great t-shirt: I've Been Shifted!

@Charger

They made some rookie mistakes in their first year and while some of them were rectified we find that people have selective memories.

We don't use the phrase "Kier "Screw all farmers" Starmer" because that's a very minor aspect of what they did... maybe Mr Clarkson uses the phrase!

The problem with UK politics at the moment is that no one can stay in power very long... that's the 6th resignation in 10 years!

I think Starmer's main problem is he has no personality and people don't like that... but people forget that Boris Johnson and Liz Truss had personality and they also made a balls up and resigned!

Many of Labours traditional supporters felt that they were being left in the cold, Labour traditionally have been left of centre, pro workers, pro workers rights and all that. But since Blair came to power in 1997 they have been at best a centre party, maybe even a little right wing, one of the reasons why the Greens and Lib Dems have done pretty well recently.

The traditional labour supporters want Andy Burnham to be the next Labour leader (and by default the new PM). He was previously an MP left to becoome mayor of Manchester, but last week he won a by-election to become an MP again and is now favourite for PM!! I beleive he is more left wing but it's not like he's a commie!

@Vyn

Reform are leading in the polls at the moment. If it wasn't for Nigel Farage they wouldn't be a thing... a bit like MAGA really! :D

Yeah I'm sure they've done much bigger mistakes than screwing over the farmers...but that just kind rhymed so it felt funny! ;D

Unlike Starmer, Andy Burnham has a dance:

So Reform is just a cult of personality and unless they can grow enough to be powerful en situ, if Farage blows away, they will to?

Cutting science budgets are indeed shortsighted and fail to see how they truly do benefit us in ways we cannot at present imagine possible.

Nobody ever saw how simulating clouds for atmospheric studies would provide a tech that was vital for the development of nuclear energy, for example.

While a stupid decision, it doesn't take affect until 2028, there will be an appeal against the decision, and they have 2 years to arrange private funding. So there is some hope it will continue.

I understand having priorities with money - can't fund everything! But this seems indicative of broader, and deeper, issues. Or the folks holding the purse strings are just dumb. Both, perhaps? Hopefully other funding sources are secured before the deadline. Or maybe things with the government will change in their favor. Much can occur in two years.

Elon Musk himself posted this video of an old SNL skit.  Watching it today is downright eerie.   :o
