Question: Could Gillan have done Coverdale's material?
« on: September 11, 2018, 03:50:21 PM »
I'm thinking of songs like "Burn", "Mistreated", "Stormbringer", and the other stuff from the Mk3 period. Would any of those have worked out with Gillan doing vocals? Would any have been improved? Or would it have been a sad folly to make Big Ian do some of those numbers?

I think it would work just fine. It's sad they're not doing it, such a big part of the Purple story.

Glenn Hughes is currently on tour doing a Classic Deep Pirple tour with a setlist which is mainly the Burn / Stormbringer / Come Taste the Band era with Smoke on the Water and Highway Star thrown in for good measure.

I think Hughes does a great job with the Mk3/Mk4 material and is good at picking Mk2 works that go well with his style.

So now I'm trying to think of him singing songs like Speed King, No One Came, Our Lady, Mary Long... even Perfect Strangers... and I think Hughes could pull them off. They would sound different, but Hughes has a broad enough range in style to be able reach to those places.

Coverdale, though... I don't think it would work as well on Gillan's more personal work, and I really didn't care much for his handling of Smoke on the Water or Space Truckin'.

I think a song like Burn, however, would be TOTALLY different with Gillan singing. When he gets aggressive, which that song requires, he tends to get shouty and/or lapses into an evil laugh. It's why some of the stuff he does on Born Again comes off as cheesy - thinking of "Disturbing the Priest" right now. The quieter parts work much better for me than the shouty parts he does.

Honestly they have enough material to play without the need to include stuff from the Coverdale era...which part from few tracks from Burn is pretty sub par in comparison anyways.

Don't think Gillan would've been suited to the the songs nor do I think he would've wanted to do them anyway. Be like asking Ozzy to do Dio era songs and as Charger pointed out there's enough classic material without having to delve into other era's.

Back in the early 2000's when DP were doing their Concerto gigs again, he was warming up for them using DP as his backing band. But i can't for the life of me remember which tunes he played...

He played Sitting In A Dream, Love Is All, Fever Dreams and Rainbow In The Dark with Deep Purple back on the Concerto Tour.
