So I see my pick of Zeppelin has been knocked out. Funny thing is I almost didn't nominate it because I thought, it being Zeppelin it might run away from everyone. It actually was on TV Sunday and while the film itself isn't that great I was wondering why the dis-like for it? I'm not complaining by any means as I never voted for it while it was on here, more of a curiosity question

I think people on here generally have an issue with Zeppelin full stop, just like at the other place. There are other albums on this list that are more deserving off the boot before TSRTS, like the one that's currently leading. No way that's winning amongst some of the bona fide classics on here. Alive is another that got the boot far too early.

The movie is the better of the two. I think it's got a better mix and edits out many of the excesses evident in the album. When I was a kid, I saw the movie and had a good time with it. I hesitated to get the live album because my mom cautioned me that, too often, live albums are just slightly sped-up versions of studio tracks with shouting over them. That was her experience with the acts she had grown up with in the 50s, so I listened to her.

But I broke the rule when I was looking at Made in Japan with a TWENTY MINUTE VERSION OF SPACE TRUCKIN'. Good gosh, 20 entire minutes. That was not a sped-up version of the studio track. That was tons more stuff getting packed in there. I had to listen, bought the platter, and it blew my mind. Live albums could be wonderful things!

I bought Made in Europe, which also rocked, even though it involved a lot of editing and could have been a double album... Even so, live albums could be wonderful things, part two!

So why not get The Song Remains the Same? It was the last LZ album for me to buy in order to be a completist, and the live track from Coda wasn't half bad, even though it was a sound check. The movie was pretty solid, as well.

I bought it and opened it up when I went over to a friend's house where we could all have a listening party.

We were forcing ourselves to get through some of the tracks. It was really hard to do. Eventually, we gave up. I went back home and tried to finish it and I did, but I didn't like it. I've gone back since a few times and each one was disappointing.

When Dread Zeppelin came on the scene as a Led Zeppelin cover band - playing everything in a reggae style with an Elvis impersonator on vocals - I totally got the reference to the way Zep played "Whole Lotta Love" on the live album.

Since then, I've found good live albums and bad live albums. The Song Remains the Same is not the worst live album at all, but it's also nowhere near being the best.
