NFL 2018 Season Predictions
« on: June 26, 2018, 08:10:44 PM »
I don't want to pick who's going to be on the Super Bowl. That's just dumb, in my book. But I do want to pick teams that will be fun to follow, in addition to my home team.

For me, it will be the 49ers and the Rams. These teams showed promise late last year and I bet they have a season that builds on that. Carson Wentz coming back to Philly will also make for some fun football.

I think Oakland could be fun with John Gruden back again.

Of course I hope my Cowboys and Ravens do well. Should be a fun season in the NFC East.

If the Giants recover from their 2017 hangover or whatever it was that left them in a mess, then the NFC East may be the division that produces the NFC champ. Dallas and Philly are both competitive, and I think the Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons can keep in the hunt. Add in an improved Giants, and those will all be games to watch.

In the AFL, Patriots and Steelers are going to be the teams to beat to get to the Super Bowl, I'm thinking. Would LOVE to see the Raiders shake things up this year.

Looking for the Jaguars to make the AFC South relevant, I liked their playoff run last year.

I think the Rams are going to shock the world this year! What a stacked team! Otherwise my two favorite teams are Packers (I am from Wisconsin) and I have always liked the Steelers.

Packers always seem like a good bet to go with, just remember to R E L A X if they lose a game or two. :)

And, yes, NFC West is also on my watch list. Rams are hot, the 49ers may have the pieces to the puzzle in the right places, Seattle has a team that Pete Carroll loves to coach, and maybe Arizona will get a fresh start.

Interested to see if the Bills and Lions can get rolling, as well.

Teams that I *don't* have high hopes for...
Chicago
Cleveland
Houston (unless they can all show up healthy at the same time)
Tampa Bay
Miami
Cincinnati

I just did one of my league drafts this weekend. Thought I picked pretty good but I am projected as 3 and 11.

Looking over analysis from the first preseason games, I don't see a lot of hand-wringing. Maybe we got us a really good year for competition coming up...

I hope none of your wives/girlfriends ruin your football viewing pleasure.  Here is a clip of one of my favorite current comedians, Bill Burr, on the subject.

:haha2:

Love it. My daughter knows how to watch a football game, but that's it. I got an aunt that, every time we're watching with her, treats the snap like it's kids getting ready for school. Clock management? No. You're gonna miss the bus, you only have 18 seconds left to snap the ball!

Enjoyed the Philly-Atlanta game last night. Glad to see the Eagles take the win, I really like that team.

Fun stuff: I was looking at other writers' predictions for the finals and Super Bowl and basically, they were re-predicting last year's outcomes.

Only 4 teams that made the playoffs in 2016 were in the 2017 playoffs... current predictions leave no room for surprise stories, injuries, shifting teams, and so on. QBs are only as good as their offensive linemen - the Raiders were touted heavily in 2017 because they had a great line in 2016. Now? Not so much...  :whistling:

I do hold out hope for my local team, the Dallas Cowboys. They're not getting big predictions but they've got good health, no legal distractions, and Dez isn't killing morale with his whining. I like their chances this year.

Don't hold much hope for the Cowboys as long as Jason Garrett is there. Pre-season form has been dreadful. Could be a long season for Dallas unfortunatey. Hope I'm wrong.

The one thing Garrett provides is stability. Dallas sorely needs continuity after the disasters in the wake of Jimmy Johnson's firing. Barry Switzer was running on Johnson's fumes and then Dallas went through head coaches like they were Cleveland. That's poison for a football club, as one can see with the case of Cleveland...

He's at the mercy of Jerry Jones, so its he who's providing the stability atm. Garrett has been there 8 years for two playoff appearances for one win. No excuses. Either win it or get rid of him..

Oh man, that Carolina game was a disaster with penalties. So many drives squandered with undisciplined play... Dallas was awful, Carolina marginally better. Both teams need to get into formation, and fast, if they want a shot at playoffs.

Meanwhile, Cleveland gave us a stunner by getting a *tie* with Pittsburgh, almost beating them! This is a team that will win more than one game this year. :)

And Chicago losing to Green Bay by only one point? Either Green Bay is on the way down or Chicago is on the way up, or both.

Biggest surprise, however, was Tampa Bay handing New Orleans a big upset.
