I've listened to Poobah and Budgie, this guy is just showing off how many obscure bands he knows with a clickbait title. I'll maybe give a listen on the others, but there's a reason a lot of the bands that didn't get a lot of attention in the 70s didn't get a lot of attention... quite a few didn't deserve the attention. There are some real overlooked gems with guys like Rory Gallagher and Tommy Bolin - and Budgie has a lot of good stuff - but Black Sabbath got a ton of attention because it delivered the goods.

And Sabbath not delivered the goods once or twice, they kept delivering the goods time and time and time and time again.  One or two good albums does not make a legend, and anyone with at least half a brain would have known this.

Absolutely. It's not like BS recorded Paranoid and then went into free-form jazz fusion improv... Those first six albums absolutely made an indelible mark on rock and roll not just because they were popular, but because the artistic excellence in them was head and shoulders above so many other acts. Bit of a slip (arguably) with TE and NSD, but H&H and MR once again lived up to their reputation.

Put another way, I've got all of Grand Funk's output from 1969-1976. There's some great stuff on those albums but, overall, they simply do not come across as coherently as the BS albums of the same period. Grand Funk is good, but Black Sabbath is better, and that's where this author loses his way when he fails to see BS for what it is.

Well, ofcourse. Just like i made a clickbait title for the thread. :) As if anyone was, is or ever will be better than Sabbath...

I just thought it was a nice way of sharing less known and obscure bands. I certainly got some "new" stuff to check out.

The question is rather; are Budgie obscure enough to be on this list? They're reasonable well known now by people who cares about such...

@ Triple Z - Grand Funk Railroad was good.  I have some of their stuff as well.  An underappreciated band for sure.  :headbanger:

Sounds like a mix between someone playing in a punk band and a porn actor... ;D

Great. Now we're talking about punk rock porn movies.

Back to the slightly modified topic, I think Budgie are obscure enough to warrant a mention. I didn't really hear about them until after Metallica covered one of their tracks and Wo Fat mentioned them as an influence. I checked them out, but their vocals take a lot of getting used to, at least for my ears.

I've heard of porngrind as a musical genre, but punk porn sounds like an alot more interesting movie genre... :) The wonderful derails of The Community \../,

Yeah, it was Metallica who introduced me to Metallica too, like MANY others. And it might be because i was lucky to be there at the right time, but there was alot of talk about them back at another place too. Not well known, true, but obscure is taking it too far, atleast compared to the rest of the list there. I mean, Buffalo would've been a better fit as far as obscurity goes.

Could've also gone with Cactus as an obscure reference that's well worth checking out.

There's many that could be mentioned there. Got a folder loaded with obscure stuff on my old computer, just gotta dig it out again.
F.ex, there was this Sabbath/Uriah Heep rip-off band called Deep Purple that was pretty o.k... :)

Finally listened to the other bands. These guys are all also-rans. Yes, they play that heavy music. Lots of bands play heavy music, but I don't buy them just because of that. They're missing that special something that makes me sit up and pay attention to what they're doing.

Berry Gordy of Motown had a easy question to ask about every song. "If you were down to your last dollar, would you buy a sandwich or this song?" If the answer was sandwich, that song was not a hit. When I hear songs like "I Wish It Would Rain" or "Tears of a Clown", I agree, I'd buy those songs. Same with "Spiral Architect" or "Wheels of Confusion", for the Black Sabbath examples.

These guys? I'll buy the sandwich, thanks very much.
