Collecting...
« on: June 14, 2018, 02:28:16 PM »
I like the comics of the late Harvey Pekar. In one of them, he described how he had been such an avid jazz record collector that he was collecting for the sake of collecting, not even listening to most of the stuff he bought. At one point, he became aware of that and had to reflect on what he was doing and why he was doing it. He then resolved to sell off most of his stuff that he had no care to listen to and keep just the good stuff.

When I read that story, I had to reckon with myself and my collecting... was I doing things just to be a completist, or was I actually sticking to music that I liked and would continue to like? I realized that I was also starting to collect for the sake of collecting and didn't want to keep going down that road. It's part of the reason why I now stick to digital music purchases - and even then, I listen before I buy and only buy the stuff I want to keep listening to.

How do you collect?

Only just noticed this thread while looking for another thread  :death:

While my collecting has subsided somewhat over the years there are certain bands that my ocd dictates that I have to have everything or close to it they put out.

I'm a big vinyl lover/collector but I mainly stick to new releases these days as I have pretty much everything I want from the 70's 80's and 90's barring a few from the mid/late 90's that are way too expensive to buy now. That goes for vintage vinyl in general, it's way overpriced these days which is why I'm glad I did a lot of my collecting and hunting in the 80's and early 90's.

Other stuff music related I've collected over the years are tour books and tour posters going back to the 80's. I also have a vast collection of cd's/DVDs/Blurays and box sets, although, Ive pretty much stopped collecting cd's these days. A lot of new vinyls come with a cd or download code so no need to double up on the cd if I'm buying the vinyl. If the vinyl doesn't come with a cd or download code I'll just stream it on Spotify.

I still have all my old VHS tapes and metal magazines from back in the day along with my metal patches that I use to love to collect as well, and back in the metclub days Metallica use to put out a very limited number of shift knobs and etched glasses that I collected.

I've also collected a lot signed memorabilia over the years, mainly music artist stuff(posters/cd's/vinyls/books) but I also have some Al Pacino and Robert De Niro signed stuff.

(I also like to collect Scarface & Mad Max 2 related stuff)  :zomg:

Other things I've collected over the years are figurines which I started to collect back in the early 2000's when McFarlane and Neca started putting out music figurines - Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Kiss etc and the last couple of years I've been collecting the pop vinyls...
Just picked up the two new Alice Cooper pop vinyls the other day

I haven't quite got to the stage where I'm asking myself what the fuck is all this collecting for? But it's not far away especially given my wife has threatened me with divorce once or twice over years and let it be known that everything is going in the hole with me when I die  :-X :whistling:

That's where you need to line up someone to take over the collection for you in the event of demise. Or at least instructions on how to sell off the assets to benefit one's estate.

My son has become the chosen one for my vinyl collection as he's become quite the metal head in that he only wants to listen to metal when he listens to music. I've also taken him to see all the classic metal bands since the age of 6, he's now 14. He was even lucky enough to get the VIP treatment and watch Sabbath soundcheck on The End tour. So I at least know he'd take care and have pride in the vinyl collection.

But yeah everything else outside my vinyl collection needs a contingency plan to maximise the benefits, you're right. I'll be turning in my grave if it all ended up in a charity shop or something.

I've actually got a friend that has agreed to take my vinyl if I ever decide to downsize and move into a smaller place for my twilight years.

Got around reorganizing my CD collection. There will be more in the future, but right now I got to finish paying off my car. They're organized by band name and release date. No, I don't know the number of albums off my head. Some of these came in LP sleeve box sets, hence the ziplock bags.

I have my MP3s arranged by genre, then by artist, then by album... at least for the last few years. Other artists are just all the songs I like of theirs in one folder... which, for Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, makes for a mess that I have to sort through every time I want to put an album together.

I'm gonna start the arduous task of cataloging all my vinyl by artist/pressing online. Will most likely use discogs as it is the easiest and has the best user interface

When I'm done I'll post a link on here. In the meantime would anyone be interested if I posted a photos on here of my full collections from each artist/band as I go?

It's a bit of extra work for me but if I'm pulling them out anyway to check barcodes etc to identify the pressings. I could take a group photo of all the vinyl from each artist rather than photos of each album.

I'll get around to posting some pics charger, I'd like to see yours and others collection photos too. It can create some discussion like a piece of art can.

Jesus, I started cataloging my vinyl on Discogs earlier on and decided to start with Metallica as its by far my largest band collection and I only got through Kill Em' All and its accompanying singles and it took me over an hour, albeit I was watching the football at the same time  :)

That collection alone is coming up as worth over $1600 and I didn't include some of my doubles of particular pressings.

This is gonna be more arduous than I thought :twitch:

Awesome charger! That's quite a collection. I like how you have associated bands together, I tend do that as well.

Also, it looks awesome when you have a particular set and the spines of the cd's make up a picture.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys..

Yeah...I used to have my bands completely alphabetzed too but I had to abandon that when they started to bleed from shelf to shelf...so now I kind of lump certain bands together on each shelf...but I need to still alphabetize them though.

I'm still missing the Live album from Priest to make that collection complete...

It took me a long time to get the Savatage text complete too...I just hate hate hate the fact that they aren't in chronological order...and the album titles are written down with a really really small font so looking for a certain album can be a drag...

I still got a one full shelf with Iced Earth, Blaze, Slayer, Anthrax and the Black Sabbath deluxe Editions and a one rotating shelf with all Sabbath, Ozzy and related albums...and one smaller shelf with Iron Maiden...also I have one shelf with all of my Female lead metal bands...to there is about 200 or so cds missing from those pics...
